    [PokeCommunity.com] Veterans Day (Remembrance Day) - Nov 11, 2010

    THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY

November 11, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day - the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.' As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for U.S. Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971.

Finally on September 20, 1975, U.S. President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on November 11.

    Celebrating Veterans Day

If the November 11 holiday falls on a non-workday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday is observed by the federal government on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). Federal government closings are established by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management; a complete schedule can be found here. State and local government closings are determined locally, and non-government businesses can close or remain open as they see fit, regardless of Federal, state or local government operation determinations.

United States Senate Resolution 143, which was passed on August 4, 2001, designated the week of November 11 through November 17, 2001, as "National Veterans Awareness Week." The resolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans.

Please take a minute or two to remember your Veterans and their families.

They all died for us to live. That is the point of this day. They sacrificed their lives to set us free. God bless every American and Canadian soldier, and may they rest in peace.

Amen to that. I never want to forget the brave souls that went into the burning towers, I never want people to think that it was a waste. It wasn't a waste, what those brave men & woman fire fighters did was show the true spirit of America, kindness, unselfishness kindness.

My thanks goes out to soldiers of all countries for defending the security and rights of the citizens from there respective country. It definitely takes a different kind of person to put others well being over their own, that alone give me their respect.

I pay all my respect to us british soldiers and america too.
They have done an amazing job of defending countries time and time again.

Even thought I live in Australia... I surely would understand the sacrifice that all the soldiers did to defend their countries from the terrible things that were to come. Even if Australia doesn't have this public holliday... I surely would understand how it was like during the wars. Thank goodness that those wars were put to an end for sure, it would've been so horrible with many people getting killed and all that, because... I really don't like it when people get killed, at least they did what they could to defend America during WWI and II.

    Over here in Australia, we just call it Remembrance Day and it relates to reflecting the end of the war as a whole, rather than those who have died during the war - those are mostly honoured on ANZAC day. Or at least that's how I see it. Idk, Australia deals with the day differently. XD;

But yeah, glad WWI & WW2 are long gone (now maybe if everyone could pull out of the current major war...), because wars are stupid imo. If we could all just solve our differences verbally, the world would be a better place. Oh well! Thanks to all the Australian soldiers for fighting for us (well, the ~empire~) throughout every war, we appreciate what you guys have done. :)

(I know this thread was aimed mainly at Americans, but yeah I can't really relate, so.. D:)

I will be standing still and remembering for 2 minutes at 11am.

I respect so much what they did for each and every country they fought for. Even if it is only a little gesture, I have my poppy on and I have had it on for a few weeks now.

What's weird is that here in Romania (and most of Europe, I suppose ?), it's not celebrated at all. I have no idea why, we were involved in World War I as well.
The only thing hat happened in 1918 here was the union of the three Romanian states in eastern-Europe : Transilvania, Moldova and Tara Romaneasca (those are all in Romanian).
But anyways, we had a small power-point this morning in which we learned about Veterans' Day.
I'm glad they died for us to live.

We wouldn't be standing here today if it weren't for those brave soldiers. Some of them must of been so young...yet they still protected their countries for people everywhere today; from the kids who go to school, to the elderly, and so on.

Well in Canada, this day is called Remembrance day, but I still respect those brave Canadian soldiers who sacrificed everything to make the country have freedom.

May all the soldiers who in peace. ♥

We would not be here without the soilders. Hopefully another world war will never happen agian.

    Amen.

One of my relatives trained pilots in the PBY; coolest thing this side of the Mississippi.

My heart goes out to every soldier.

Yeah, the holiday is called Remembrance Day in Canada as well.

It's kind of staggering really to consider how many people have died for my country, and it's the least I can do to remember their sacrifice.

I'd like to send thanks and praise towards the veteran's of America, Canada and every other country that was subdued in war. We wouldn't be free like we are today if not for them. They deserve to be honored so.

    Lest we forget.

Here in Germany, there is no such thing as military holidays (since the last war we were not the villains in was, like, uhh... against ... Napoleon?). Instead, the carnival season starts today.
...and I don't care about it, only catholics from the Rhine/Ruhr area do. [/stereotypes no one else here knows/cares about]

I didn't know there was stuff about today outside of the UK......well, you learn something new every day!

I've heard about those carnivals in Germany....sound a bit weird, don't they last for 3 months or something stupid? Would at least make sense to have them in the summer.....

Still, we probably should pay our respects.....even though it depresses everyone...

Like us Aussies have said, we call it Rememberance Day.
Damn us humans for creating wars. D:

What can i say? Here in Mexico, our history is full of wars, indepence war, revolution war, even we've a small contributtion in the WWII. Is just so stupid see two or more countries kill each other. Now here in Mexico we've a really bad situation who can turn into a war, hopefully all become more paceful. I feel a great admiration for all the unkown heroes like the firefighters, cops, soldiers, etc., who put his best effort to make this world a better place to live. And even that USA and Mexico in some time were enemies, i really like to show my thanks to all the soldiers and specially to all the veterans of my neighbor's country.
    XD
God bless America all of us...

I wanna thank my Canadian and German ancestor for fighting in WW1 and WW2.

You will be missed and thanks for making the world a better place for the new gens.:)
