I mentioned it earlier and I'm with you: they need to put him out to pasture, bad. Back in the 90s if you told everybody you were a Sonic fan you'd be celebrated for having good taste in video games, because back then they were the pinnacle of gaming. Nowadays if you say that everybody looks at you weird and wonders what the heck is wrong with you. I grew up with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Gems Collection and I'm happy I was stuck with that because they just went downhill after they left the Genesis. I admittedly have to hand it to them though; the Sonic franchise should have been killed twice over already, and yet because of that rabid crazy fanbase they survived. Those guys buy anything with Sonic's mug on it and like it.
I've never actually played either game, and since a former friend of mine who happened to be a hardcore Sonic fan recommended them I'm sorta wary. Sure they might actually be good games but this guy liked Sonic '06 and thought it was a good game, and wasn't a fan of the classic Genesis games at all. If your taste in video games is that screwed up there's no way I can take your recommendations seriously.
With that said, I always felt Sonic played best with an emphasis on the platforming and less of an emphasis on the story. Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic CD had excuse plots that basically boiled down to Dr. Robotnik was doing something evil like jamming animals in robots and you had to stop him, and all of those games are complete classics that are still very fun to play to this day. Maybe because instead of you going down the same areas over and over again or having to deal with a story that you'd expect to find in an RPG they focused on the game looking good and being very fun to play, which... isn't... something they do these days....
