What are the characters, storylines, arcs, etc that you think were the biggest missed opportunities or had the most wasted potential in the anime? Things that had the potential to be great but in the end were just... 'meh' or not followed through well.

    There is only one thing:

    The entire BW anime!

It started out looking good, then got bad and went absolutely nowhere. It was best on what's considered the best in the series and it little right. They only had to follow the games this time, no change was needed and they could have made it so much better then it was.

Few things I can think of: -I think they could have done a little more with Ash turning into a Pikachu at the tail end of Johto. I didn't like that he changed back pretty much right at the beginning of the next episode. It would have been better if Team Rocket captured him and he changes back while trapped.

-I asked a while ago if Ash and Gary should've been traveling partners after season 5 ended and most didn't think so but I still think it would've been interesting to see for at least a season how they would've worked together. Gary should've been involved in a few more Johto episodes also.

-And of course, the whole GS ball story. It was so dumb that it ended up being left a mystery and completely forgotten about. I get they made Celebi the focus of the fourth movie, but they could've come up with something else for the GS ball.

Like Z25 said, the entire Unova saga. If they didn't reboot Ash into a complete noob and had a different female companion instead of Iris, I would have actually enjoyed it.

The GS ball. Really it was for nothing, it was supposed to has a connection with Celebi but nothing happened. That's just a shame.
I was really annoyed that we never heard a word about the GS Ball once it was left with Kurt. I kept waiting through the middle part of the Johto saga, but I basically gave up hope around the time of Master Quest (the final Johto season).

If they didn't reboot Ash into a complete noob and had a different female companion instead of Iris, I would have actually enjoyed it.
I feel it was unnecessary to completely reset Ash for Unova, and make him a newbie all over again, throwing away whatever character development he had through the past five regions (including the Orange Islands). Now, who knows what will really happen with Ash once the Sun/Moon anime begins...

The whole of Serena's arc. Basically existed for her first year, then rushed through her plot-forced goal with little development and was done as a character almost 7 month's from the end.

Same with Clemont, only he was done after the fifth gym and only gained relevance in the TF arc.

I can understand your point. XY had great character development but as you said, it was badly distributed as far as Ash's companions go. In fact I felt XY put way too much focus on Ash and granted, he is the lead protagonist and all but I hate it when he completely steals the character development spotlight.

I think Ash himself embodies this concept. He can undergo an immense amount of character development, catch some amazing Pokemon, and we all know how it's all going to end - he'll lose the league, abandon his current team, develop a severe case of amnesia, and travel to the next region with only Pikachu for company.

He's like the singularity of wasted potential; everything around him - Pokemon, travelling companions, story arcs - gets sucked in and lost for all eternity.

Every Pokemon league except the original, Johto, and half of sinnoh. The League was always built up as this big event in their universe and the only reason we sat with Ash through 200+ episodes is to get to the league for the most part and I feel it should always be treated in a way that yu gi oh treated its tournaments. the Pokemon league should be used to show off every non legendary in the Dex in clever ways. What I like about the original series league was that Ash was Facing Random People but those randoms brought out a battle out of him who else remember ash getting spanked by a bellsprout cause the trainer was good at using a bellsprout. 800+ Pokemon now no reason one or two rounds should be done in a montage or the Pokemon league should never be less then 10 episodes imo. Also the seriousness of it all. I think Kalos was the only time where the fate of the world was in the balance in the league and nobody even knew till after imagine if Alain went in evil to the Pokemon league abd everyone knew his plan and the only way to stop his plan was to beat his overly plot armored Charizard. Have ash win but team flare still lets off Zygarde. The Pokemon league needs more work imo
