FireRed hack: Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

okay i found an absolutely fascinating glitch yesterday, that i highly doubt is a big deal or that many other people are ever going to find, if anyone really, but:

the character had just given me a key item, so i looked at what it was, and clicked to use it even though i knew it wouldn't do anything. i then did that with a few other key items too. then when i backed out i was in control of the character???
the most interesting bit is like the last minute, if you're just looking to see what the glitch is. in the beginning i went back to the exact same spot i was in the first time i triggered it, then tested closer to the character and it still happened.
i'm just now noticing the other character is even the one who did the animation for flying... also i'm not sure if it's just this key item, i'm not sure why i didn't try others! but it only happened with this npc and not any others, i wonder if it's because she's the only one with a scripted movement?

Absolutely love the hack though btw!!! i barely ever get through the first couple of gyms in a romhack or fangame but i got through the entire game in this one, plus got to about 300 pokedex entries without even looking at the guide! the designs are all so fun and i couldn't even keep a team of just 6 XD
I've experienced this bug too, I don't think it's tied to the item it's just a bug with that cutscene. If you walk her through her door, that's another way to fix it, you'll regain proper control inside the house.

[PokeCommunity.com] Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

OVERVIEW

Weird Type Fun is a simple rom hack with an even simpler concept: to have even series veterans be confused about type matchups. With 18 all new types and a completely reimagined pokédex to match, WTF makes the ever familiar Kanto a little bit less so.

While WTF sticks mostly to the core FireRed story and structure, some characters and lore has been changed around to keep things fresh. Event only areas (aka Navel Rock and Birth Island) have been made accessible through gameplay and a couple of new locations and small events have been added in.

FEATURES

  • All types have been replaced with new alternatives. Type matchups do not mirror original.
  • 400-ish pokémon, assembled from up to gen 9 (thus including Hisui and Paldea). Also includes a couple of beta pokémon and fakemon.
  • Each pokémon has been redesigned to fit its new type (think Fool's Gold, except more nonsensical)
  • Moves and items updated to match the new types
  • Mostly faithful Gen III Kanto experience with some new twists

KNOWN ISSUES

This is very much a first rom hack situation. A funny sprite project got out of hand and I learned rom hacking on the go.

There is the occasional oddity/issue with the hack I have yet to figure out how to fix (some of them directly caused by my blunders early on in the project, haha). Nothing game-breaking as far as testing has revealed, but I will list what I know here for reference.

Spoiler:

Q&A

Spoiler:

WHAT'S NEXT
  • Fixing known issues
  • Fixing any other issues that turn up
  • Any quality of life improvements I can think of / learn to do
  • Redoing several sprites / designs (you can tell which ones were made first)

COMING SOMEDAY, EVENTUALLY, MAYBE
Spoiler:

Thanks for your interest in my silly little rom hack! It was small and broken in the beginning, but with the help of this awesome community it's growing into its own!
This rom is so unique it's the best custom pokemon rom I ever played and I have played hundreds you yes you your a genius make a second you got the gift !!!

Can someone please explain the Key Item Bad Egg for me? What's its purpose in this game?
I'm enjoying this game overall and have multiple save files, even though I am one of those players who prefer using cheat codes for experimentation. (One of my saves is Shiny Encounters locked and Walk Through Walls unlocked) I will say that there's a lot more potential for expansion of this type swap to be implemented on other ROM Hacks if given the permission to use them, particularly a Emerald-Hoenn exclusive version, alongside a few others that I have conceptualized in my dream ROM Hacks.

Keep on bringing the future plans to create the ultimate experience for all to enjoy!

The bad egg is basically a trophy that indicates you found one of the game's secrets. There's a few others, and in the postgame there's an NPC who'll give you a reward for having them all.

What are these other items, I would like to know in advance as a guide for reference.

I've seen 2 eevee's a white fluffy one and a dark ghost like one. What are the eeveeloutions and do both eevees have the same or different eeveelutions/ evolution methods

I actually just made an account for this site to ask something similar; been playing this game for a day or so, got to the Safari Zone and got 2 shinies back to back? After having not found any the entire game that is. Are the shiny odds not 1/8192 or am I just insanely lucky?

Hello hello! I hope you don't mind, but I wanted to help with documentation for this current version (1.93) of Weird Type Fun, to take some pressure off your back, and also because I thought looking through the files was fun! Well, and because I thought it would be useful, of course! :P

I'm not done yet, approximately 2/3rds of the pokemon have their moves (aside from egg moves cuz I don't know where to find em lol), base stats, gender ratios and egg groups, held items, and evolutions listed, while I'd say about 1/3rd are incomplete or blank. My bestie and I are still working on it, but I figured it'd still maybe be helpful to have some things listed even if not complete yet...? Locations are in the docs that come with the game, and abilities are mostly in numbers that I would need to figure out which correspond to which ability, so we're not dealing with those yet.

Anyways, here's the link! Formatting for the docs is based upon the docs for Gold and Silver '97 Reforged because I am waaaaaay too lazy to come up with a whole new formatting :P

Also, may I ask why Delphox is Magic/Knight, while its pokedex entry mentions that it's heralded as a goddess of light magic? :o I wasn't sure if it was a reference to like, Sayaka's knightly view on what being a magical girl should be, or if it was a typo because of Knight and Light rhyming. :P Especially since it seems like Knight is the "default"/"dummy" type when looking through hex maniac advance? I tried looking at Delphox's moveset to try and suss it out, but I couldn't glean much from that endeavor. I'll accept any answer you put forth, I'm just super curious on the thought process behind it, since I love Madoka Magica and was thrilled to see the whole evolutionary line in this game!

Anywho, hope you're doing okay! Hope people find this useful! Let me know if I need to take anything on the docs down or something!

Anyone else not able to play this in Mgba? Only vba works and I truly dislike vba.

Am I missing a setting? No discord for this one stings.

it works for me on mgba
Don't suppose you did anything different or struggled to get it to run, eh? Like it won't even load the base rom. So idk. vba runs it and the rom. I assume I've got a messed up setting for this specific hack.

Edit: Looks like it won't run fire red at all. I played a yellow hack recently, would that have changed something? usually only played fire red and don't touch settings. Cuz it runs the yellow hack and base rom, but ONLY GBC games now.

This is incredible, thank you so much!
I will point out in case you hadn't noticed, the first Pokemon is Bulbasaur and third is Venusaur, which seems odd since Bayleef is the second mon haha
edit: also just noticed that the stats have Speed in the 4th slot when it's usually 6th, is there a reason for that? it feels strange to me.

I can't get to navel rock. Am I missing something? Oak should give me the ticket, right? I got to birth island, got the ruby and sapphire, caught manaphy, E4 etc etc. Where do I get this ticket?
