Well, that's kind of mature for a kids show...

  • Something I've noticed, and I found it quite funny.

I've gone back to watching my old cartoons and Disney shows, and now that I'm older I can finally see the more mature innuendos that are in them, intentionally or not. It's kinda funny.

The reason they're there is because when kids watch tv, they usually have adult guardians looking over them. So in order to make the show more appealing to all viewers, they add some of that. The adults laugh because they understand, the kids do because they don't have a clue in hell.

So, Has anyone seen shows from when they were younger and noticed something a little weird?

God, I'm bad at making questions, but I hope that makes sense.

    Here's one that I found:

Just watch it and you'll probably see it. I don't think it was intentional, but I still laughed.

One time I was walking past the TV and my sister was watching The Powerpuff Girls and there was this scene when the Mayor was... well, I'll gif it and show you.
It all comes down to how you interpret things though.

PPG had some weird stuff for a kids' show indeed.

A lot of stuff I see-and is quite debatable as well-is on Spongebob. My parents even prohibited my younger sister from watching it for a while, after watching a scene where bob's brain are dropped out.

I remember that scene, I actually watched that episode of The Powerpuff Girls.

Pretty stupid to see the Mayor licking a cat.

  • The weirdness in SpongeBob isn't particularly sexual (despite the protestations of many parents' groups in the US) but still more adult than its intended audience may comprehend upon first viewing. For me, watching early episodes (i.e. the episodes before the movie) is a much more beneficial experience now than I probably felt when they actually aired nearly ten years ago. For example, SpongeBob and Patrick's idea of being adults consists of listening to free-form jazz and having sideburns! Kids shows don't get their humour from this kind of stuff... and I love SpongeBob all the more for its weird brand of eccentricity. (Well, I did before the episodes started turning to crap after the movie.)

    oh
    oh god

Cartoons are even more rewarding now than when I was a kid, with all the references and adult humour.

Here's my favourite one, THUMBS UP IF YOU GET IT

  • You probably never heard of it [/hipster], but Käpt'n Blaubär certainly is one of these. When I was like 4, I used to love the cassettes, I listened to them a lot. It wasn#t on TV yet back then, but eventually that happened as well. And recently, I watched a couple of episodes, some of them being based on the aforementioned cassettes, on YT, and only then I noticed that maybe just half of the humour is understandable for children, the other half is satire only grown-ups can understand.
Or how could I have known back then that for example "Von Hein lernen heißt lieben lernen" (Learning from Hein means learning to love) is not just some funny saying but actually refers to the DDR propaganda phrase "Von der Sowjetunion lernen heißt siegen lernen" (learning from the SU means learning to win). That example might sound weird, but in practice it's just hilarious.

Bless your sweet mind for not understanding that.

Agree 100%. They went down the drain after the movie because the director/producer (idr who or what it was, something like that though) left. But either way, I have a lot more fun watching older SpongeBob episodes now than I did back then.

The only thing I can think of is how on Rocko's Modern Life, there was an episode where they said "wee wee" at the end. A lot. And I don't think I need to explain a wee wee. And I'm also fairly sure it wasn't the French "oui oui." Actually, that show in general might be a little more mature than we thought it was at the time. It's not on tv anymore though, so it's not like I get to watch it a lot and compare, but yeah.

Also, Captain Fabio posted this on Vendak's profile. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kclq2zGQy4w This...I want to say it shouldn't exist, but at the same time, it's too hilarious.

  • I love watching older cartoons 80s/90s from my childhood and realizing how so much of it wouldn't be acceptable today! It's great! There so much sexual innuendo in the Beetlejuice Cartoon, oh man, so good though. Now, I find that cartoons are really tame and educational, with no fun or silliness. Animaniacs was great because it was full of pop culture references, which made it fun for my Dad to watch and then he's explain them to me. I love all the adult things in cartoons though, hilarious!

...I didn't even get it until you said that, lol. XD

Anyways, I can't think of any specific examples of the top of my head, but I do have to share this. It is Tvtropes listing for "Getting Crap Past the Radar" entries, or, essentially, what this thread is discussing. It certainly is a fun read! xD

Oh, there is something I remember! xD That Spongebob episode about the Karate Island. I didn't know it when I first saw it, but later on I realized it was a parody of Kill Bill. xD I laughed so hard when I rewatched it. ^__^

  • Some of these made me laugh, I love the PPG!

Although it's not a kids show, its an advert for a product directed at kids.

    It's kind of obvious...

  • Well, I do like a bunch of these show that do have adult material. Like Drake and Josh, iCarly, The Amanda show, most of the stuff of Nickelodeon of today.

Yeah, I do know that they love to get away with these kinds of stuff. Also, I have watched the Nostalgia Critic's top 11 naughtiest Animaniacs moments.

  • Oh all the time. There's this episode of The Rugrats where the grandpa goes out and rents porn. Totally went over my head as a kid. I actually really liked that cartoons and children's movies do this; makes it entertaining for the parent, without the kids actually knowing what's going on. Cuz you don't. Stuff like that just flies over your head when you're young. I'm glad that when I have kids I'm going to get a few laughs out of their shows and movies.

I was watching American Dragon Jake Long, and that talking dog said to a fairy
"Hey baby! Why don't you shake those things my way!... Your wings! I was talking about your wings!"

    ... Yeah...

  • One time when I was watching Spongebob, he was walking into an arcade, looked around, and said,"Hm...so this is what a hotbed of sin looks like?"

I SWEAR those were the words SB said, but then again, I was sugar high...
