Issue: What's disallowed in usernames?

When I was first joining the site not long ago, I had a HECK of a time creating a username that worked.

Issue 1: When you type in a username that doesn't work, the error message you get tells you that your name is taken or that it's not allowed.

But it doesn't tell you which one of those two it is. Which can be a problem. Especially when you cannot look in the existing members without an account.

Do you think this could be programmed in, for benefit of newbies?

Issue 2: The website never tells new users which kinds of usernames aren't permitted. I strongly suggest a list of what kinds of character or words are not allowed in usernames.

e.g. Can I use spaces? What kind of special characters can I use and not use? How LONG can my username be? What words are not permitted?

Question: And finally, this. Because above issues were in place, it took a lot of trial and error on my part to discover why every variation of the username I wanted was being rejected.

I concluded... are you ready for this?
    "amp" is blocked.
People are not allowed to register a username if "amp" is anywhere in the name.
(I was trying to make an Ampharos-based username.)
So I have to ask - and laugh while I do so, trust me - why "amp"? I have a burning curiosity why those three little letters are considered impermissible in usernames. It's just so laughably bizarre, haha...

    To reply to Issue #2:
    PokéCommunity Rules said:
User names must be appropriate. Users with inappropriate names will be banned and you will be asked to re-register your account.

That's pretty much the only restriction on usernames here, and in most cases it's at the discretion of the higher staff on what is an appropriate vs inappropriate username as well.

Yes, but, what about special characters, etc.? This could use more transparency and definition at the sign-in screen.

Besides, I proved that is not the case, by discovering "amp" is blocked - unless that's somehow inappropriate?

Special characters are allowed, provided it's not the one where you register and your name appears invisible. Which I know sounds strange, but there have been people that registered with a blank name, and those aren't allowed.

The character limit, I believe, is 36.

One thing you can try to do to check to see if it's that the username is taken already, paste this into a new tab: https://www.pokecommunity.com/member.php?username=

And then after the = type in the username you want/are looking for. In the case of "amp", that was already taken some time ago.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm afraid you misunderstand.
New-registering users currently cannot use the three letters "amp" ANYWHERE in their username.
I tried Ampharos with countless variations (e.g. words before it). I tried Amph with many variations. I tried AmpAmp. AmpAmpAmp. All of them were flagged as not permitted. It's that particular phrase that the system is currently flagging as inappropriate. Why is this?

I don't really know why then. There are registered accounts with usernames that contain "amp" in them so maybe it's some sort of recent error? Maybe one of the admins knows. I'm not sure why "amp" would be purposely flagged as not permitted.

pretty sure the amp restriction was lifted last night after you posted this thread

don't quote me on that, I just recall jake (Hiroshi Sotomura) saying something to that effect on discord

amp is part of the phrase & which is the escaped form of the character &, which is a HTML code thing. Maybe the ban was something to do with that.
