    I really liked the idea behind this thread: https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/285814, but we couldn't post there because it died well over a year ago, and I was sad. XD;

    Soooo, what do you think happens to all of the various Pokemon once their trainer dies?

    Talkin' Pokeballs, Pokemon inside the PC boxes, older, babies, or daycare, etc. Any and all of them.

    I'm not going to answer just yet, because I don't wanna influence other answers. -w-
     
    I think it would depend on the trainer. Similar to the real world, when a person passes away with no family, friends, albeit sad, no one really gives them much thought, and I think the same would happen to the Pokemon of such a trainer. In any other case I'd think the family members would decide what to do, in the absence of a will of course. I'd imagine most of the Pokemon would just be passed down. They are family aren't they?
     
    We all know from Lavender Town that Pokemon die. And in the Anime, when ash doesnt believe in Pikachu or his Pokemon, they get weak and usually loose the battle.
    So what if, in theory, that Pokemon die with trainers from sadness, or the disbelief of their trainers love and belief in them?

    Just a theory.
     
    I have to agree with Flush'd. When you pass away, your family inherits most of your things. If you were in the Pokémon world, they'd be having all your Pokémon as well. d: Your Pokémon might have a choice, though—they would probably have the chance to select which member of your family they'd like to belong to.

    If that doesn't turn out to be the case, then I don't know… maybe your Pokémon get released in the wild? When a Pokémon's trainer is dead, they would be extremely depressed. One of the best ways to make them feel better is by letting them go and give them all the freedom they want.

    I'd probably write a will when I first start my journey or maybe state that I want them released. There are a lot of deadly pokemon, don't want to die in the arms (or hair) of a singing laughing Gourgeist and have my pokemon trapped forever. That would be really sad.
     
    A long long time ago when I was first getting into the Pokemon fandom, I read a theory somewhere that Pokemon die when their trainers die. It was due to their bond, and how the Pokemon didn't want to go on living without their trainer. It's a touching thought, and one that I kept in mind for a few years.

    That's changed, though.

    Now I like the idea that when a trainer dies, their Pokemon are distributed to new trainers or released in the wild, if the trainer's family doesn't want all the Pokemon. After finding out about their trainer's fate, the Pokemon are given a chance to grieve (and perhaps some are given the chance to chose, if one feels that Pokemon are that intelligent to make that decision) before being released or transferred.
     
    What really happens to pokémon when their trainers die? I think in a lot of cases pokémon inside their balls eventually die too. While they're stored as energy inside pokéballs, there has to be some kind of battery to the ball... once the battery runs out the pokémon's atoms would just scatter into the atmosphere. It's quite sad.

    Also, just think of the amount of pokémon who are obviously carniverous! There are many reports of cats & dogs who munch on their owners when they die... think that Houndoom isn't going to take a couple of chomps out of you once you're gone? Think Munchlax is going to turn down some Kentuck Fried Trainer (FKT)?

    But yes, the pokémon who are free would either go feral and leave & the ones in their balls would die. If the trainer is found quick enough though, they might get sent to the a kennel, Battersea 'Mon's Home??

    I have honestly never thought or even considered the idea of a trainer dying, and to further my idea would be AZ from X and Y, if you see what I mean.. but to be honest, now that I am thinking about it, I'd say that if a trainer were to die, the Pokémon wouldn't just die at all following their trainer's death, but I'd say they should just either get released back into the wild or passed down to another trainer who was close to the late trainer.
     
    I'd imagine people would mention their pokemon in their will. Some would give their pokemon to relatives, some to the safari zone while others would want them to be released. If someone dies without writing a will, I think they would legally go to the closest relative(s) of the person who died.

    Pokemon left in Pokeballs can get out one their own if it feels like it has been a long time since they've ever been let out. It was evident in the Anime that they are capable. So Pokemon left in Pokeballs can still survive.
     
    I agree with all of the people who say that trainers would put Pokémon in their will. If I was a trainer and died, I would want my family to have my Pokémon, so I know someone I trust is taking good care of them.
     
    I dont think a trainer will die. Ash is still ten years old after years because he told his Pokemon to use recover to recover his age. If a trainer death, the Pokemon will use recover to recover their trainer.
     
    I don't think the Pokémon die or anything when their trainer dies. They're probably passed on to family or relatives, etc. If not, they'll probably be put in the Daycare and will be up for adoption. It would make sense, because where else would the Pokémon go? I could also see it getting released, but how would the Pokéball be able to tell?
     
    I like to think that the Pokemon are inherited to the trainer's family, or if they're unable to care for them then the lab takes them in. Didn't Professor Oak have like a crazy amount of Pokemon at his lab that he cared for?
     
    I would have to think that any Pokemon left behind when a trainer passes away would become the responsibility of close friends or family. They wouldn't have to keep the Pokemon if they didn't want them, but they'd be the ones to either put them up for adoption or to find them good homes.

    There's always a possibility that a trainer doesn't have anyone to leave this Pokemon behind to, though. In these cases, I expect that they're taken in to the Pokemon equivalent of an animal shelter, where their fate is decided there.
