Who else feels the same way?

i think pokemon is due for a reboot. the anime needs a new character. Ash is stagnant. does not grow. does not age. just quits when he loses and runs to a new land. when i lose to some elite 4 i give my team time to rest in the pokecenter and i am back in the fight when they are ready, ash is just not relatable, not even to my old 10 year old self.

i want a rebooted anime, characters that age, and when we move to a new region we get a new protagonist, with the previous protagonists showing up as a mentor role, or as defending champions and rivals. ash needs to go pikachu as well.

as for the games, i would like them going the same direction as Pokken. action combat, refined to an art that the skill difference with a newb and a veteran would be great, and that with action combat, type disadvantages could be overcome with skill. did you guys not see those charizards drop some blastoises in the anime???? and there was that dragonite that crushed some ice type.

I think it'd be really neat to see characters who age. I've always wanted that. Like in the manga. In fact, an anime based off of the PokeSpe manga would be downright awesome!

The main reason why I stopped watching Pokémon was because none of the characters grew up and everyone just stayed the same way. It was also starting to bore me to the point where I decided to stop watching. For the games I don't have much of a problem with it.

I'm not a fan of the anime, but I doubt they will be rebooting it anytime soon. Ash Ketchum and his pikachu are recognizable characters, and as long as there are new regions for the two of them to explore, they have no reason to change up anything.

I think the games are fine as they are. A more action-oriented game would be good for a spin-off, but the main series games have always been focused on strategy over actual combat, and there is no way that Pokemon is going to change the play style of their core series games, as that would be akin to taking the whole franchise in another direction. Based on the success of Pokemon so far, they have no reason to change.

I don't get the sense that the people who make the anime want to have a character who grows up and eventually needs to be replaced. As much as some of us probably don't want to admit it, the anime is geared towards kids, and the people who create it probably figure that their audience turns over every few years. Thus, every time Ash starts a new league (or at least every other league), they can "reboot" by having him leave behind all of his Pokemon except Pikachu (and by weakening Pikachu with some sort of illness, electromagnetic waves from Team Rocket, etc., that make it weaker than a brand new trainer's starter Pokemon). Sure, they could use a new character besides Ash, but he and Pikachu are anime mascots, and if they want a character that acts like Ash, why replace him (and the name recognition he carries) with someone else.

I wouldn't mind seeing Ash age a bit, but I don't think it's all that common for anime characters to grow up in shows. Growth in the manga is the exception, not the rule. And with an expected audience around age 10, maybe a little younger, they're going to stick with a protagonist in that age bracket. Granted, I am curious about how many younger kids actually watch Pokemon these days, and how many adults who grew up with the show still watch as a comparison, but I'm not sure if it would really be the same series if Ash grew up.

That being said, if the people who write the anime don't want Ash to age, perhaps a show could be made for older audiences featuring older characters, or characters who actually accomplish their goals (like Origins).

I want the games to stay the way they've been. I really like turn-based battles, and I don't want Pokemon to become into a competition of reflexes. I also really like being able to play for relaxation when I'm falling asleep, which doesn't work too well when I have to pay attention and respond in real time.

my expectations are not quite the same as ignore the target audience completely. with Ash starting in Kanto: 10 yr
moving to Johto: 11 yr + new main character or add new companion based on the gold silver characters 10 yr.
to Hoen: 12 yr + hoen characters 10 yr.
and so on.... until now X/Y Ash 15 or 16 yr with the X/Y characters 10 yr. if they really want to push this Ash + Serena thing, then duh make Serena 15/16.
why is it that Naruto can start out being some simple kids show about ninjas and grow to become what it is now. Naruto Shipuden is even able to make mature political commentary about pacifism and politics.

Characters growing up isn't necessary, otherwise it's harder for new children to relate to Ash. The could simply replace Ash and co with a team of new characters (Think Digimon, Pokemon Adventures/Special, Pretty Cure etc.).

Whilst Ash never aging may be one of the oldest tropes in Pokémon and whilst he never actually ages his growth is shown by him changing his Pokémon team (Except of course Pikachu) and gaining a new companion whenever he reaches a new region.

Whilst I am not a fan of the Ash character he provides a constant for both seasoned watchers of the anime and indeed new watchers. Ash being 10 helps him appeal to young new viewers which may go on to contribute to the Pokemon Franchise as they get older.

One side note, shouldn't Pikachu be Level 100 and really overpowered by now? Pikachu is the Franchise Mascot, ask a non-pokemon fan to name a Pokémon they will likely say Pikachu so they won't remove him from the anime anytime soon either.

On Pokken whilst I think it will sell well it is in a tough market of other Fighting Games. I think Pokemon should concentrate on the main series games which have been selling incredibly well since the original Red/Blue.

In truth if I want to play a Fighting Game I will play the likes of Street Fighter or Dead or Alive over Pokken. Pokémon as a Fighting game strikes me as odd.

Obviously, Ash doesn't take on an 'Elite 4,' he participates in a tournament, which makes the format seem more reasonable on their part. In any case it's going to have the same resolution, whether or not he returns to the same place. That said, I don't think that people generally turn to Naruto for deep political or systematic considerations. They do have Hegel, for one, after all.

naruto is by far the definitive source for discussion on mature matters. but at the very least, naruto has left a small footprint on the very tip of the iceberg that is discussion on mature matters, however small that footprint is. with the nature of pokemon they could make meaningful statements on the subject of abuse, they would just have to do it skillfully and gracefully so not to offend anyone.
my point is not that i want mature subjects in the pokemon show, it is that they can aim higher. naruto started out as a simple show, and reached farther and turned the story to express a meaningful thing you would not have expected from watching the first 50 episodes. one of the most awesome part of gold silver is when you discover trainer Red on top of a mountain. no dialogue just jump into battle. that is one unforgettable way to reintroduce some old characters. but no such plot twist in the anime, ash and pikachu somehow resets their level and pokemon knowledge in new regions. i specifically remember seeing ash pull out his Dex to check on a voltorb in the Indigo league season. then move to Johto and i see him pull out his Dex like it was the first time he ever saw a voltorb. Pokemon evolve. Ash and pikachu are special they De-evolve, both knowledge and skill. and we are there to watch him struggle through the whole way in the anime, there is no such awe like the growth and progress you see with Red''s skill and pokemon, when you are with ash.... however the more recent episodes seem to be going in the better direction.

I don't think they should change anything about the anime itself as Imperator said above, it is geared to a young audience with quite the turnaround. However, I think they should make a new series or two. I liked Origins as a miniseries; I think doing that for every generation would be a good treat. Then another ongoing series with more mature themes, a story besides fighting the Pokemon League for the sake of it, and a more shonen feel to it. They could have it take place in the same universe as the current anime and possibly do a crossover every now and then, but should most likely make it a separate series altogether. With the spinoffs, I'm surprised Pokemon hasn't made a few different animes. Mystery Dungeon seems like a great Saturday morning cartoon for kids; the Coliseum games could definitely be adapted to a mature anime; the Ranger games...well, I never played any so I can't say. It amazes me that a franchise as big as Pokemon sticks to the same anime and film series.

Ash is definitely over-done. But perhaps a new series that follows the footsteps that Ash took and seeing how it transformed the series. Ash and Pikachu references could be made All while having a completely new PIkachu with new personality.

I also would prefer to see characters that had similar dynamic as Misty and Gary season 1. With Misty being someone who constantly teases Ash, and Gary being someone who rivaled him.

One of the things that the anime really did well was "rivalry" but now, it doesn't feel like their progressing. Every gym feels the same and does the exact same thing.

I would like a character who added something interesting to the world of Pokemon. For example, in the anime series Parasyte, the main character had a stigma for insects and anything similar. Due to the parasite he developed and changed.

Perhaps we can see a character who has no intentions of being the Pokemon Master (whatever that is) but still has an idol (like Ash). And maybe a combination of Pikachu, A female complex friend, and a jerky rival can push him to go for it.

For Some reason, whenever i imagine this, i imagine "Kris" from Pokemon Crystal.

I think BW was their way of fresh "reboot" but it didn't really work out so well. The franchise is constantly changing in subtle ways that in a way it's always revamping itself in new, fresh ways but I do agree that the anime needs something different. It would be nice if they went the route that Yu-Gi-Oh took, with new seasons introducing a whole new cast with nods to previous characters/plots.

Hey there fellow pokecommunity friend. My opinion is that pokemon characters don't age for two reasons. The first which i found it obvious is that kids/teenagers can watch pokemon until a particular age since when they start to grow up e.t.c they will probably watch other animes,''special movies'' and such. So i think it's good that the characters do not grow plus who would like to show ash becoming very old (since in the creators fantasy pokemon have infinite gens lol) or ash passing away because of his age and since it's a show for that particular age i think it's better that they never grow. The second reason is if they grow their voice should be changed to a heavier one something that sounds not so good to as i said above kids/teenagers or they have to use advanced vocabulary which some people may not understand sometimes even flaming since they are older. So i think it may be boring for some of us who have growed with pokemon for so many years but think a little about the people in the future who will have 6+ gens to play (oh dear they will grind eggs and exp it will take millions of hours to do all that lol). I hope they change some ingame gameplay and add some more features and finally become a gotcha catch them all lol and let each player meet other in their world battle together e.t.c through wifi which youngsters will find it amazing i think.

If the producers of the anime don't intend for the anime to end, then the characters will likely stay as they are indefinitely. In addition, it's a kids' show. Kids don't have the attention span to keep track of 930+ episodes (including specials) and counting. 10-year-olds aren't exactly overly analytical about advanced character and plot development either.

The goal isn't to make sure all the kids sit down and continue watching forever. No, the anime serves as a really long commercial for all of the franchise's merchandise. Stamp the franchise into the brains of kids. They go buy the games. The cards. The toys. You name them. The kids grow up. They pass the message onto younger kids. Hell, they have their own kids and pass the message onto the new generation.

The same applies to many anime that were adapted from games, light novels, manga, etc. They're advertisements for the original source. You're interested in what you're watching? Great! There's more where that came from! Buy 'em all! Anime's job is done. No need to continue watching unless you really want to keep going. Meanwhile, production will continue regardless to pull in newcomers.

The franchise would be better off investing in a separate title, such as Pokemon Origins (oh, what do you know?! It happened to be a glorified advertisement for the sixth generation!), rather than overhauling the existing formula for a show that'll turn 20 years old in 2017.

Maybe we'll see something interesting in the news then. Who knows. Good excuse for the franchise to announce something crazy.

going by that logic then Gohan Trunks and Goten should all be more popular than Goku and Vegeta.
yet SOMEHOW in a popularity contest Goku and Vegeta still beats the half saiyan kiddies. there are plenty of examples of kiddy shows that have main characters older than 16..... AND THAT'S JUST 16. if you counted Ash's age in the anime right now, he would reasonably only be around 15 or 16 now.

once again my idea is not to abandon all the old characters completely. if i had the power, i would have new characters in new regions meet up with the older characters. some become new allies, some become rivals, some become regional champions, some just do the good old mentor role. there is no good reason that Ash needs to stay 10, when you can still have old characters around in the anime, showing up once in a while or staying together with the main character for some period.

First: I hate pikachu because it is the only pokemon most of my friends know. they could just change it up a little give people a decent knowledge of pokemon names.

    2nd: ash is stupid :p
For someone who grew up in a world of pokemon, you would think he wouldn't be throwing rocks at spearow.

3rd: ash has been 10 years old for 20 years. Come on! maybe just have an episode where he turns 11?
actually, that would be cool for the aniversary.

So by the time the Pokemon anime celebrates its 100th anniversary and all the producers, directors, writers, voice actors/actresses and their next two lines of successors have kicked the bucket, Ash would be 15 and experience puberty for the first time.

    Fantastic.

On a more serious note, Ash doesn't have an age. He was 10 years old at the start of the show. Great. Let's just say it was literally his birthday and he was 10 years, 0 months, 0 days old.

In the Pikachu & Pichu animated short, Ash explicitly states that he's celebrating the anniversary of partnering with Pikachu. ONE YEAR. He has to be 11 at this point. Unless a year means something else in the Pokemon world, he's 11.

But then Best Wishes happened and Ash is explicitly stated as being 10 years old. Great!

There are some other instances, at least in the dub, that screw around with time and age even more. But I'll stick to the Japanese versions as "official." Then again, official or not, I don't think the writers really care. Ash is forever 10. He'll turn 11 later on and he'll devolve into 10 again at some point.

He doesn't have an age. He's literally age-less (as in he has no age) because no one, not even the writers, directors, etc. can figure out his age.
