Why is it okay to like Disney and not Pokemon?

Earlier in school, my teacher was playing music from Disney movies as we worked, and me and my friend were talking about how we get more upset over the movies now than when we were younger.
I brought up how I'd watched Mewtwo vs. Mew in November and bawled my eyes out.

"I seriously can't believe you still like that." said my friend.

I don't understand the reasoning behind this. It's not like Pokemon is aimed at an age group younger than that of Disney. We all grew up with Pokemon just like we did Disney too.

So why is it that people in school can talk freely about Disney and people think nothing of it, but Pokemon is so weird?

You know, I'm 18 and Pokemon 2000 makes me cry my eyes out. Fight the power!!

Disney is classic, that's why. We grew up on Disney, our parents grew up on Disney, and probably their parents grew up on it too if said grandparents are young enough (ex: my grandfather was born sometime in the 1940s, I believe, and Snow White came out in that same decade). It's something you hear that everyone, and I mean everyone, can relate to easily and go "Oh yeah I remember watcing <such and such Disney movie> when I was a kid!" It's endearing, ontop of all of that.

Pokemon, on the other hand, doesn't have the same classic feel or "tag" to it as Disney does. Not everyone can relate to Pokemon like they can to Disney. It came out during my generation and hasn't been around as long as good o' Mickey Mouse has and thus hasn't had any chances to really bridge any kind of generation gap/stigma. Just the other day, my mom picked up my Mismagius plushie and remarked, "Where is your brain...?" If this were a Disney character instead, however, she'd understand better since she grew up on Disney like I did (and she worked at Disneyland as a teen, ontop of it all).

... Okay, so I'm shooting in the dark here with this, but that answer made the most sense to me. >:

Disney movies are made with families in mind. People of all ages can enjoy them.

Pokemon movies are made with children in mind. Generally, you'd need to either be a child or a fan of the series to enjoy them.

Plus, Disney movies are generally quite good. They feature high quality animation, voice talent, music, scripts (although sometimes they fall a bit short in this department). Pokemon movies aren't. I enjoy them, but I wouldn't call them good movies.

Well... the popular bastards need some base to pick on people. Basic like for Disney simply wasn't a base, but Pokemon ended up like that because of how the dialogue does not tend to "maturity" sometimes. And Disney is probably so low they simply don't care.

I always cry at the first Pokemon movie. And several of the episodes of the anime, which say goodbye to some of my favorites. *sniffle* However, I don't see why it seems ok to like Disney and not Pokemon in that aspect. If you read deep, Pokemon sometimes has some seriously mature undertones. Take Pokemon Heroes for example. I thought that movie took a mature turn I never saw coming.

Like others have already said, Disney is for general audiences. Disney movies can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Pokemon (Particularly the anime) is aimed at kids, not families. I'm sure your parents would like to watch some new kiddie Disney movie like Bolt over Pokemon. Since the anime is so childish, people often come to the conclusion that the games are childish. And as pretty much everyone on this forum knows, anything childish is "gay". 3:

    This is why:

-Disney has been around, like has been said, forever. Our parents remember them (My dad took my mom on her first date to see Aladinn while it was in theaters! No joke!) and Disney is just something that everyone can relate to in someway. All of their movies are instant classics in some way. I cry watching The Lion King, which happens to be my favorite movie of all time. I love all of the Disney movies and almost everyone else does too because they're just so good.

-Pokemon is new. It came out after I was born and that wasn't too long ago. The movies, yeah, are good, but not very memorable. The only ones I actually remember well are 4Ever, Mew v.s. Mewtwo, 2000, and Mystery of the Unown. However, I remember almost every Disney movie I've ever seen. However, Pokemon does have a much deeper emotional level. I cry in almost all of the movies (Cept the recent ones). But, compared to Disney, it isn't very popular.

    One word,
    Death

If you look back at Pokemon and Disney both had a different look at death, with Pokemon it was never definite, with Disney when a character died they died.

It seems, to people, that: "if it isn't a least a little dark, it is way too childish".

Which isn't necessarily true but it's a popular trend nowadays.

I talk bout pokemon all the time and you would be surprised as to how many people play pokemon my last years english teacher plays pokemon and when i finished my work we would have little chats about it

Thats Awesome! Disney and pokemon are very different, and i also love Disney! They haven't picked on me or one of my friends for liking pokemon, but if they did i wouldnt care as im playing a game I enjoy!

It is because people treated Pokemon like a fad when it first came out. They all jumped on the bandwagon because they thought it was cool, and when they found the next fad as they got older, they jumped off.

Most of the people now that are into Pokemon are fans that never thought of it as a fad, and kids that are new to it.

However, with Disney nobody really treated it like a fad, and nobody treats people who like Disney as a nerd. I mean, have you ever heard someone call somebody a "Disney nerd"? I'm pretty sure I have heard someone call somebody a "Pokemon nerd" though.

Disney is cool though, I was just at Downtown Disney on Saturday. :P

Do you think it would be dope if Square, Game Freak, and Disney teamed up to make a game? That would be a weird one, but who knows it could be cool.

People always fear what they don't understand...

...and it seems some (okay, most) people just don't "get" the awesomeness of Pokemon!

I'm 22 and hardly speak of my love of Pokemon to anyone, but would gladly talk about it with anyone who actually cared.

    That's why I come here! :)

We seem to be part of a minority. I am proud to be in that minority!

Someone actually cried at the ending of "Mewtwo Strikes Back"? I was laughing my ass off at how lame and corny that was. >_>

From the standpoint of the movies. Disney movies are far better than the Pokemon movies. I stopped caring about the Pokemon movies after "Power of One", only watching them if they happened to be on TV or something. On the other hand, I was waiting in anticipation all last year for the latest Disney movie "Princess and the Frog" to come out so I can see it, and I'm 22.

Personally, Disney movies are more nostalgic to me than Pokemon in general. I was 11 when the Pokemon games came out, but I had seen at least 15 different Disney movies before that point in my life, including several of my favorites. :D

I find Disney movies just as juvenile as Pokemon most of the time. I like the Pokemon movies more than Disney, but there are some Disney movies that are really awesome like the Lion King and the Emperors New Groove. But I enjoy the Pokemon movies more.

I grew up with pokemon and Disney, I remember when i was icle i had one side of my room with pictures of like mickey mouse, minnie mouse, goofy etc and the other side with pokemon, but as i started to get older i grew out of disney but i still love pokemon =/ i don't know why people disagree with pokemon all the time

Huh. That's a good question. Actually (thankfully) almost all of my friends love pokémon. Or, they at least enjoy it. I guess that it's because Disney still makes some movies aimed at older audiences while Pokémon's are alost all aimed at younger. But still, Pokémon comes out with games for older audiences, while Disney's games are all younger.

    In summary, I don't know.

Yea that's what I was gonna say, hence the fact I love both Disney and Pokemon
