Yes, Officer, I did see the speed limit sign. I just didn't see you.

What kind of driver are you? Do you get nervous, or are you the kind of person that gets really impatient at others on the road? Ever had any problems with the law? When did you get your license? Did you ever fail the road test, and how long did it take you to pass? If you don't drive, why not?

Anything else you'd like to add - just a driving thread.

For our younger members, do you plan on driving as soon as you can, or are you not that excited for it?

If I drove I would be breaking the law.

Maybe I'll learn to drive in a couple of years. Getting a roof over my head is the priority. £2k car insurance per year is not.

I'm a relatively laid-back driver, but alert to my surroundings. I don't care if someone drives too slow, or anything like that as long as they don't hit me.
I got my license at 17/18-ish, because I was in no hurry to drive everywhere, considering I was too busy with school for a job to pay for the fuel anyhow.
I failed the written test the first time, because the computer malfunctioned. The second time was on actual paper and I received relatively good results.
I failed the first driving exam, because the guy wore too much aftershave or cologne and pretty much choked me out to the point where I couldn't think straight. The second time I did fair enough and the lady was pleasant as a passenger.

So far, I have never been in an accident and only got pulled over once for speeding. It was 2am and I was honestly in a hurry to get home and sleep. The street was empty and they just let me go.

I'm already old enough to have a license, it's just that I'm not brave enough to start driving, so getting a license will be quite hard for me. I might just rely on public transportation my whole life. :'D

If I do drive, however, I'm sure I'll be the nervous oh-♥♥♥♥-I'm-scared-I'll-crash-at-everything type of driver.

I was getting my licence then was put off when on my first lesson I crashed the car into a tree...
I haven't driven since ^^

I've just gotten my full driver's license and I'd say that I've only just recently become a fully confident driver.

My advice to anyone learning to drive that doesn't feel confident is just keep at it. I feel like there's a psychological barrier to driving that not a lot of people talk about. Even after I had passed all my tests, I didn't feel comfortable behind the wheel as I always had a foreboding feeling that at any moment another car could run a light or swerve into me, or a dog could run out at me, anything really, and if my reflexes or awareness wasn't up to notch, then my car and potentially me as well could come to an untimely end.

It's taken 5 years and one accident (which I came through unscathed) to really get that out of my system. I've been on the road for 5 years, and I've seen all sorts of shenanigans. I know what to expect from other drivers, and I know what to expect from myself. I don't have the greatest reflexes, but what I do well is constantly being aware of my surroundings and always knowing when to hover my foot above the brake.

I'm a fairly confident driver these days. I tend to drive a little over most of the time.

Speaking of officers, I did get a ticket, but it was the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever. This was the speed limit sign I was expected to see.

To put it shortly, I am challenging the ticket.

I didn't get my license until I was 19 or 20 - I had to live out of my mom's house so my mom didn't have to put me on her car insurance. I was really nervous, but I kept reminding myself that there are blathering idiots that can barely string a sentence together that can figure out driving, so if they can do it then it should be no problem for me. I never had to retake any tests and I only really practiced for a week.

Now I drive about an hour every weekday and I feel completely comfortable on roads. I've gotten good at estimating based on the size of the road and the cars around me what the speed limit is, which is good because oftentimes they're not posted for a long time. I still have zero sense of direction, but it only takes me a few days to commit a route to memory. But because no sense of direction, I can't just reverse it in my head to figure out the way home, I have to memorize it separately.

I'm a very angry driver when other people don't follow the rules of the road. Such as people not using their directional and people who don't have the right of way going before others. Otherwise I'm pleasant to have driving behind you. Unless you drive unreasonably slow, but even then I'm most likely to drive around you and carry on with my day. I'm pretty sure I'm on the cusp of five years with my license. I passed my driving test on the first try. Also I've never been pulled over -yet-

If I have any advice it's don't hesitate. If you're going to turn THEN TURN don't second guess yourself last second and slam on the breaks. Also I know when you're first driving the highway can be intimidating, but it's actually the easiest form of driving imo. The scariest thing is probably getting on the highway when you first start, but once you get the feel it's just straight driving at one speed.

I realize where you live and your situation is a factor to whether you get your license on time or not, but when I meet people around where I live that are my age and they don't even have a permit yet I judge a little lol. Especially when these are people trying to get with me. I can't help, but see it as them having little ambition... like how can you not want to drive and experience ultimate freedom ya know? Obvs if it's financial problems then I understand.

I'm a very cautious driver so to speak. not to say I don't speed or break the rules but I really tend to follow the rules of the road and pay extreme attention to what I am doing. I don't even like to talk on the phone while driving because I am afraid it is distracting me too much. I am so scared of having a car crash that it just motivates me to do this.

I'm a very careful and patient driver. I tend to drive at the limit especially when I have passengers in the car.

I got my licence around 2002 or 2003 can't remember the exact year - so far haven't gotten into accidents or pulled over - have only gotten 1 ticket, time expired on a parking meter.

I'm very impatient, but I'm not an ass rider like a lot of other impatient people, I like to keep a good distance from the car in front of me. I'm cautious to an extent, but if I see an opportunity to pass a slow driver, I won't hesitate too act on it. I'll speed as long as there's no cops around. Funny part is, I never been pulled over by a cop yet. I passed that written test you have to take to get your permit when I was 15 on the first try then a year later I passed my road test on the first drive. Driving is something that I am confident about and for those who aren't confident behind the wheel, the only advice I can give is to just get out there and do it, no excuses.

I often get really nervous when driving-I always am thinking I'm either going to get into an accident or pulled over. When in a traffic jam, I get really impatient-to the point of shouting at the driver in front of me. Also I get in a tizzy when I end up following someone all the way or someone is following me all the way (particularly the former when on my way home.)
I didn't enroll in driver's ed until I was 16, and didn't get to the second level of the Michigan Graduated Driver's License program until I was close to 18-though you renew your driver's license shortly before you turn 18-at which point you get full driver privileges, and the Graduated program no longer applies.

I'm only on my first phase of learners (good luck understanding if you aren't Australian) but I do a lot of driving.

I'm a pretty confident driver really and generally neither nervous or a speed demon (although I hate having to stop every five minutes in peak hour traffic or for swarms of red lights). I hate other driver though, especially if they suck.

My language has gotten so much worse since I started driving xD

Let's just say I've been driving since 15 and I tend to honk my horn and give the one-finger highway salute when I see someone doing anything that causes me to slow down. As well as add a few obscenities to my speech from time to time.

My husband got a speeding fine in a similar way. He got flashed by an intersection speed camera going 60 in a 50 zone. However the visible 50 sign was too close to the intersection for that to be unlawful. It turns out there was another 50 sign further from the intersection that a hedge had grown over. We took photos of the obscured sign and sent a letter and the fine got waived. Hopefully you'll get yours waived too.

I've been driving for 11 years and my confidence is pretty good. I can get impatient when people insist on driving 10 km/hr below the speed limit though. Every time it rains or I go through a tunnel I hate having to deal with these overly cautious drivers. I also get annoyed stuck behind someone on a single lane winding road that doesn't know how to take corners properly.

If I had to label my driving style, I'd describe it as passive-aggressive with heavier leanings toward aggressive. I've been licensed since 17, but spent nearly 3 years with just my permit before that. I failed my test the first time due to not remembering how to do the 90-degree back-in. I did well enough on the rest of the test that I was told to come back in 2 weeks, I executed it perfectly then and the 90-degree back-in is not a move I've used ever since.

I'm also extremely aware of my surroundings on the road except when I'm extremely tired. I'm an awful driver when extremely tired.
