Have you made any theories or headcanons about the Pokémon universe and its inhabitants? Do you believe any theories going around in the Pokémon fandom? Share them here!

    More common ones I believe:

    - Ditto is a failed attempt at creating Mew
    - Kangaskhan and Cubone are related

    Slightly less common:

    - Pokémon can evolve differently depending on the trainer. I think this would explain why some Pokémon in the anime take a long time to evolve or seem to evolve without the required exp etc, and why some trainers in the game have evolved forms that can't normally be evolved at those levels. They just don't implement varied evolutions in the games because it would be too complex to work out.

That's...actually all I can think of! I don't usually think of headcannons to any serious extent, other than for my OC haha.

Nice! I do have a bucketload of theories to the point I started compiling them into a small notebook. I won't share all of them but here are some extracts, which I'll divide into spoiler and non-spoiler theories.

    No spoilers:
    - I don't think Kabu is biologically related to Flannery as others do, but I do believe he's a close friend of her family who helped raise her. She regards him as an honorary uncle or godfather of sorts.
-To reconcile the discrepancies as to who invented the modern Pokédex, I assume LGPE is the starting point for the Pokémon canon - the game where Red, Blue and Green went on their journeys without a Pokédex and are young "veteran" Trainers. Oak, with help from Prof. Rowan and Bill, finished the first "alpha" version of the Pokédex shortly before Chase/Elaine and Trace went on their journeys, after years and years of work. Furthermore, Oak and Rowan shared the software with other professors like Elm and Birch, hence explaining why Brendan/May have a Pokédex despite the Hoenn games happening in parallel to the Kanto games.
-Lt. Surge has been planted in Kanto to promote his homeland (Unova or another region based on the US)'s Pokémon League. He's not very well-liked in Kanto as a result; most citizens see him as an "invader" of sorts. Not that he cares, as long as he has the backing from his home region's League.

    Spoilers (PLA mostly):

Ironically enough I...actually watched this video today:

Which debunked the Ditto/Mew theory pretty well, so that kind of makes my headcannon go down a bit. I guess I will set it aside for now, as convincing as it may seem from some angles. Not sure if you watched it recently, but it's worth a view even if it only covers 3 theories!

    Spoiler:

I definitely see this. Putting these two side by side now and realizing just how harshly Ingo lived his life in Hisui compared to Emmet, who has been living in an environment where they're not struggling to survive, will honestly be so sad for me to see.

One I refuse to believe is N being Zoroark. That just seems so extreme to me, more than most other theories. :x

Definitely a headcannon, but I like thinking that most of the hobbyist trainers are better than they seem, and are simply matching the skill of the main character.

Fisherman Elliot isn't going to beat a 10 year old down with a Gyarados and Tentacruel, but calling him for a rematch with 7 badges and he's willing to use a better team.

It's fun to think that an early route bug catcher could be sitting there with a Volcarona or Yanmega, but why would you use that against someone who got a Pokemon 30 minutes ago.

In GSC/HGSS the early routes of Kanto feature much more powerful trainers.

Now this one's an interesting take on the matter of level scaling in future games! To me, it wouldn't be so far-fetched that even common Trainers (not just Gym Leaders, as in the Origins anime) would use different teams to match their opponents' skills - especially when that would theoretically result in the Pokémon gaining substantial amounts of EXP.

Conversely, Elite Four members and the standing Champion have mostly fixed teams. When they have rematch teams like most Elite Four members do nowadays, it's a result of the player having raised the standard for Pokémon Trainers in the region at large and pushing even experienced League members to improve. The only region where this doesn't happen is Kalos, but you know... none of the Gym Leaders get involved in anything, an entire town was left with its houses toppled over, and the protagonist of the post-game quest is a girl who lived alone in the streets for most of her 16 years alive. Yeah, Kalos just sucks.

I like Zeo's theory also. It definitely fits the gym leaders, but I haven't thought much about how well it would fit regular trainers too. Pushing the standard for trainers and the League higher is a cool thought but honestly so unfortunate for new trainers that will need to work harder to get their eight badges.. as well as existing ones who were working on getting them all and preparing for the championships. :')

Lately I've been believing the 'Pokédex entries are written by the player' theories more. Magcargo's body temprature being hotter than the sun, Larvitar eating large mountains, Metang not even getting scratches if it collides with a jet, etc are just way too ridiculous to be true. I really doubt these things were actually tested or observed by any researchers.

I agree with most of this. I decided long ago that gym leaders actually have an entire roster of levels up to (but not past) those of the league champion. In Kanto certainly I could see it that Red, bored by the lack of post-game, spent another year wandering around rematching the entire region but actually helping other trainers improve. He left for Mt. Silver when he realised that he was truly special and they were unwilling / unable to reach his level. I think the final "......." in the Johto games' story is actually a massive smile!

No, this was all observed in the war. Magcargo cracked its own shell and smothered a nuclear bomb, Larvitar went full Kaiju on a symbolic mountain, and Metang obliterated Lt. Surge's air support (the F-35 wishes it had the vertical take-off capabilities of Metang). Dragonite's world-travelling was actually a failed attempt to Superman (1978) it all and resurrect their trainer. Team Rocket's radio-wave experiment was an attempt to reacquire deliberately lost knowledge of how to use Gyarados to lay waste coastal regions. Light Ball is actually a remnant of that original program, Lt. Surge convinced some scientists that Pikachu's small size makes it a great assassin, but it would need a power boost to get past Poké-bodyguards. Professor Oak and Agatha were a super-hot warrior couple who reacted to the peace in opposite ways...I could go on!

    Here's one that makes a disturbing amount of sense when thinking about it, hence why I don't want to think about it. Koga isn't really a native Kantonian, he's just a non-PokéJapan foreigner appropriating the ninja arts for who knows what purpose. I hope to Arceus he isn't, but the fact he has a fake Japanese accent both in the anime and in the English version of Masters (whereas his daughter doesn't have one in the latter) is... concerning. He also speaks with an odd accent in the Japanese original, probably antiquated linguistics. I'd really like to think this is just a standard "jokingly slander your fave" kind of theory my brain came up with, but the amount of sense it makes after seeing a certain someone in PLA is tearing me apart. ;_;

And speaking of funny little theory my brain came up with... PLA spoilers:

I truly 100% believe that N is a Zoroark. In my opinion, there's many signs that point to him being one. We do know Zoroark is shown to be able to talk in human language when other Zoroark are transformed into people, so I honestly believe it, and lean towards it maybe being true.

I still believe the Ditto is a failed Mew clone theory, I don't care what DYKG said, they can't stop me from believing it just because they debunked it, LOL. :|

Not really a theory, but I believe I heard somewhere people said in Sun/Moon that Hau isn't our rival, we're Hau's rival. I think this makes more sense than you realize that we're Hau's rival, not Hau being our rival. Think about it, tbh.

Also not a theory, but an idea process that certain generations served as a "soft reboot" for the franchise. Which are gens 3, 5, and the tail end of gen 7 with Kanto's re-remakes. Every odd number generation seems to be some sort of "reboot" to Pokemon, in various ways. But, that's not a theory, perse, but something I feel like is true.

    Here's some I don't believe though:

That there was "war" in Kanto and that's why there's barely any younger men around in the region. That's just stupid, if you ask me. The war line was likely just said to give Lt. Surge personality, I honestly highly doubt there was a war that killed off like almost all the younger men in the Kanto region.

Also don't believe the theory that Red killed Blue/Green's Raticate. People are buying too much into his dialogue on that one. He probably just boxed his Raticate, to be perfectly honest. This one is just...dumb. Never been all that fond of this theory. It's just so incredibly stupid.

Now, for some anime ones I don't believe.

The Ash coma theory is stupid af. Like, no. I heard somewhere recently that Ash is just on summer vacation forever. But, the coma theory is just a stupid creepypasta that holds absolutely no merit. u_u Let's be real.

That Ash's Pikachu was "replaced" like really, now? That's absolutely stupid. We've been with the same Pikachu since day one. He just started acting different because he trusted Ash. That's really it.

That's it, though, can't think of anything else atm.

Alright, more of a confession here, but I've been looking for fanart of Ingo and Emmet in the T&T sites and I honestly don't understand where the "Nimbasa Trio" stuff with Elesa comes from. Not that I dislike it, but I always thought the twins were supposed to be more "almighty janitor" characters than celebrities. In my mind, they'd probably be clueless about who she is despite her being super famous. Of course, that doesn't prevent them from befriending her later, but I found my version of events more amusing. (Especially because I have a story in which, after a lot of trials and tribulations including their own deaths, Ingo and Emmet are finally reunited under different identities and move out of Unova altogether - then realize how little they actually knew the region they worked in once they get used to their new home.)

Which begs the question: what if the Universe itself (Arceus, the UBs, whatever you call it) generally thinks that facility leaders are unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but nevertheless spirits them away where they could be needed because of their strength? It's legitimately weird that it's happened twice so far - first Anabel, then Ingo - and I doubt it will be the last time. That's... a little disturbing, to be honest. They may be unimportant to the world as a whole if you're inclined to believe they're mostly underground figures, but they're important to someone else within their own world. Back in the day, it was already shocking to see Caitlin without Darach in B/W even though she was not a Faller, and now it's happening again seeing Ingo without Emmet. There's a realistic possibility that, say, we might see Palmer or the Battle Chatelaine sisters in a similar predicament, and I dread that possibility with all my heart. No more splitting families up, okay, Game Freak?

EDIT: Given the recent turn of events concerning Ingo's hairstyle in his PLA concept art, I hereby declare that non-canon to my personal canon. Look, that's not how male pattern baldness works. That's what today's youth would call a "yee yee a** haircut." I do believe he has a receding hairline, but it looks far more realistic than what was shown in the guidebook. His hair is also scruffier and more unkempt, because there is no way it's that flat/neat during a time like that. (Alternatively, that is his haircut fresh out of Unova, but he grows out his hair out the longer he stays in Hisui.)

i still think mimikyu and banette are the same entity possessing different forms

Hey, good one! I've got one that could be seen as a complement to this one. I brought this one up to my mom, even.

What if the base entity inside Mimikyu is Ghost-type, and its secondary type comes from the material its disguise is made of? I mean, an Alolan Mimikyu's disguise already has magical properties, being able to expand and deflate itself while Mimikyu uses Let's Snuggle Forever. The same could apply to Banette - the fabric is mundane and has no special properties, so no secondary type.

That way, we could have regional variants/clones of Mimikyu with disguises made of different materials; leaves makes it part Grass, a Substitute doll makes it part Dragon, a toy robot makes it part Steel, an Eevee disguise made of Wooloo wool makes it part Normal, a Pikachu disguise woven with Mareep wool makes it part Electric, and so on and so forth. Wouldn't that be great?

i really like that one! o:

my theory is like... the entity/"spirit" (however you want to call it) inside of mimikyu is the same one that was originally inside of banette. banette is an abandoned doll that was thrown away. seeing that people played with pikachu, a very popular pokemon, it stands to reason that this "spirit", made its own pikachu disguise in the hopes of attracting attention and being played with again like it used to be. that's why mimikyu is often lonely, constantly searching for friends to play with it like it was originally as a banette.

the big hole in this theory, of course, is that banette is Vengeful As Hell, but i think that vengefulness turned into loneliness over time.

    so there you go!

I like to assume that Arceus is not the be-all-end-all of the Pokemon universe. Yes, it is very powerful and yes it probably has had its involvement in creating the world and some of the legendaries that took on an important role to keep stuff in balance (like the gen 4 ones in particular).

Instead I think that there's probably an entire pantheon of gods (of which Arceus may or may not be part of), albeit most of them being very abstract creatures that don't have a physical appearance. They may even be the cause of/responsible for different dimensions and what not.

Here's some fresh new theories to get this thread moving again! Some of them might be... out of the box, to be honest, but that's just how I roll.

    The nature of Ghost-types
-Ghost-types aren't alive in the traditional sense; they waiver between the realm of the living and the dead. The only way they can "die" is by fulfilling their purpose, whatever it is - and it can take them a damn long while to find it. They are endowed with a sort of "resurrective" immortality, however; once they "die," they revert back into eggs and are reborn as the earliest stage of their species, without memories but with a similar personality.
-Additionally, Ghost-types who possess objects can leave said objects behind for another of their kind to use - especially in the case of not-fully-evolved or single-stage Ghost-types. That way, the bereaved Trainer won't feel so lonely and the newly-born Ghost Mon reaps both an object and a potential human companion. This is especially common among the Sinistea family, Dhelmise and Mimikyu.
-On a final note, Ghost-types are the closest to humans in terms of sentience due to their position in the cycle of life, death and everything in-between. They are unique in that they are the only kind of Pokémon that can reincarnate/be "born" from humans as well as INTO humans. If you were close with a Ghost-type Pokémon who vanished in childhood and you later see your own child (biological or otherwise) or a student/mentee display similar quirks as said Ghost-type, well...

I turned into a... human ghost?
-Human ghosts in the Pokémon world have much the same attributes as Ghost-type Pokémon do - they just keep their human form to fulfill their purpose, and much like Ghost-types, have various degrees of corporeality. Some are indistinguishable from living humans; they are called Fallen, because they used to be confused with and treated as Fallers until it was understood that the two were different. Others manifest under specific conditions and/or are incorporeal; these are called Ethereals. It's still unknown what exactly causes this phenomenon.
-The entity responsible for creating Ghost-types and human ghosts remains yet unseen, but Arceus is also known to meddle with their work on occasion. It is often speculated that this Pokémon may resemble a darker version of Ho-Oh (who canonically has the power to bring Pokémon back from the dead) or a less scary version of Yveltal.
-Arceus initially sentenced Beni to roam the world of the living as a Fallen after his death as punishment for his treatment of Rei/Akari and his involvement in Kamado's plots. He did, however, redeem himself eventually; when one of his newborn descendants was not expected to make it, Beni used a forbidden ninja technique to transfer his life energy to him, thus saving the newborn's life at the cost of his own existence. Said descendant is, obviously, Wally. This is why Wally is (or will eventually grow up to be, later in life) a dead ringer for his ancestor - because he is, in a way, both descendant and reincarnation at once.

    Other theories
-The Pokémon world equivalent of Buenos Aires (in Argentina) has a one-for-one replica of Johto's National Park called the "Tohjonian Park," which was created by Kantonian and Johtonian immigrants in the city. They even have their own version of the Bug-Catching Contest!
-The Pokémon world equivalent of Mar del Plata (also in Argentina) is known for its iconic Sealeo statues near the beach.
-After Bede effectively takes over as the Gym Leader of Ballonlea, Opal moves to the Scarlet/Violet region to spend her last few years in a more amenable environment - just like many English people move to Spain once they retire.
-Poison-type specialists live, on average, 10-15 years less than specialists of other Pokémon types. There's only so much immunity that can be built with constant exposure to chemicals and (neuro)toxins, and once that threshold is broken, illnesses begin to manifest. Respiratory illnesses and neurological disorders are the most common, although cancer and mental illnesses also happen quite often among mono-Poison-type Trainers.

Here is a theory that me and my friend have been discussing alot lately regarding Sendoff Spring and the reason why Giratina was banished to the Distortion World by Arceus.

Its weird how Sendoff Spring is the 4th Lake of Sinnoh yet has no guardian or maybe it did and something happened to it, a 4th guardian that looked like Uxie, Mespirt & Azelf but had a black head dress with parts of all 3 and it was the leader of the quartet due to it being so powerful and in control of the lake which has access to the Distortion World.

The 4th Lake Guardian was seen by Arceus to be far too powerful and saw it as a threat so planned to have it destroyed and almost succeeded until Giratina intervened and saved the 4th Lake Guardian by sending it through a portal into another world where it would be safe from Arceus's wrath, once it knew it was safe Giratina then took over as ruler of Sendoff Spring and covered the entrance to the lake and Turnback Cave in a thick fog.

Arceus saw the interference of Giratina as a betrayal and after the two engaged in a long battle Arceus then banished Giratina to the Distortion World as a punishment and over the remaining centuries Giratina kept watch over Sendoff Spring from the Distortion World and bided its time for another shot at Arceus when the opportunity would arise.

Local people who were around at the time came to the conclusion that Giratina was a violent Pokemon and incredibly dangerous but were unaware of the fact that its actually kind and only intends to help others, due to the people's interpretation of Giratina they vowed its name must never be spoken and erased Sendoff Spring's location from all maps of Sinnoh (hence the reason why it became known as the 4th lake of Sinnoh that was kept a secret).

Let me know what you think.

I wish that Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl & Legends Arceus had expanded more on the story of Sendoff Spring.

In the English translation only, Brassius's name is a pseudonym he signs his works with. His real name is Brais, the same as in the Spanish translation.

The order of the the Pokémon arceus made goes like this.
Mew (It has the DNA of all Pokémon so it might of been a source code arceus could use to speed stuff up)> Palkia/Dialga/Giratina> Xernias.

    A few theories I have :

    - Gym leaders have several teams of different levels they use depending on the challenger team's level ;

    - Ghost pokémon are pokémon who died and had their spirits remain for various reasons (curse, goal to achieve, ...) while most spirits go away, which could explain why they are rare ;

    - Most pokémon are sentient and intelligent. And most of these, like Meowth, could learn to speak human language with enough time and effort if they wanted.

    - Psychic type pokémon could speak human language through telepathy, also with training (like Mewtwo). I think I remember that Slowking in Pokémon's second film, talking with its mind like that.
Edit : Watched a scene again, Slowking talks with its mouth.

There also was this talking Gastly in one of the first episodes.
