It doesn't affect me much and I still play on my PS3. I just hate how it went offline during the start of my spring break and it still remains the same with no current news of when it will be back up. I just hope it gets back up soon because at this rate i'll end up having a very boring spring break.

same, luckly i ddnt buy anything from playsation store, except download some free things

it'l come back up sometime soon, and i heard if u played multiplayer games tht use exp. points (call of duty fer example) u go back 2 lvl 1, a classmate told me

and i never got the email, hope i dnt

They're handling this well, it's just a shame that the average PSN user feels the need to fling crap at Sony as though the company itself did anything untoward — no system is unhackable, so it's said. People who put their card details on the Inernet, knowing full well that they could be compromised... the ignorance on display is astounding.
I don't especially like Sony, but I don't dislike them, so I hope the PR hit from this isn't too bad.
But you know, most places actually encrypt that sort of information and not make them a plain text file.

About the DB that the hacker is trying to sell back to Sony is fake, mainly because Sony never kept the 3digit security code of credit cards, and because it could be a lie. So with that said, everyone who has said "someone bought ________ on my credit card because of the breach" is lying to make Sony look bad.

Guys, can I please ask you to keep on topic.
If you don't have anything good or decent to say, don't say it at all. If this keeps down the path that it is now, I will lock it.

    Don't spoil it for yourselves.

Well, after a week I haven't seen anything suspicious on my account yet. Luckily I only had a debit card tied to my account, so thankfully my credit score was never going to be affected.

For those that haven't heard, Visa has openly announced that they will work with your bank and credit your account if your card information was stolen.

This should be done by any credit company, obviously, but Visa was great enough to officially declare it.

From what I've been told, the PSN will be returning better than ever. Does this mean new features will be added, or will it only be an increase in security? All users will be required to change passwords upon login.

I hope they change the style of the Ps3 as I'm getting bored of it. xD

Also, for the future I think when Sony bring out the Ps4 or something that they should make it only accept image, music, and video files when putting a usb stick in. That way nobody can jailbreak it... I think.
This is what it's about really "jail breaking." Because a guy called George Hotz decided to find out how to jailbreak the Ps3 and Sony then got mad and wanted to take it to court but then dropped it for some stupid reason, then the hacking group anonymous got involved and got all the data from Sony. But anonymous said there on our side because they are fighting for rights and freedom and they don't want to ruin our gaming or hurt us in anyway.

This is all the information I've gathered by looking on Google and youtube.

There is a hundred more ways. Whatever thing it might be, it will always be cracked, jailbreaked, or read burned DVDs.

As for PSN going down.. I do have a PSP, but I never really bothered with it. I don't plan to as well, I don't see any benefits it can bring me a custom firmware can't. (Now before some extremist antipiracy dude bans me, custom firmware does not equal piracy. Use your brain.)

They were using outdated technology with well known weaknesses. The security really was horrible considering Sony is a mega-corporation.

I think people should be going towards the hackers first though, then deal with Sony's crappy security.
I hope so as well, seeing as Sony has confirmed that credit card information has been stolen. PSN will never rebound from this.

Sony said the credit card information was encrypted, so it's unlikely that they got credit card information.

I didn't hear about the PSN having more problems until a friend of mine told me a few days ago. I was actually on there the day before the problems started when I got a PS One game. I'm surprised that Sony keeps on having these hacker issues and not Microsoft and Xbox Live.

If you really did gather information from google and youtube then you would know that Anonymous was not behind the breach, and you would know why the case was dropped.

No matter what you do, you'll never make a system that's 100% foolproof. People will always find a way around a security measure, whether it's through a memory overflow, a third-party exploit, or any other means. Even WPA, despite being believed to be 'un-hackable', can be hacked. It takes some serious skill and devotion, but it's been done before.

Ironically, there's an exploit in XBox Live stemming from Modern Warfare 2 at the moment. I'm not very keen on the details, but I do know it's some kind of phishing scam.

    Funny that you say jailbreak.

For the time being the most accurate explanation is that the PSN was hacked by sub-groups of anonymous to get back at Sony, not the people. Your details are not what they are after.

It all started after a certain update from Sony disabled some features on the PS3 and they could not be restored by any other means then jailbreaking. If you didn't install this update apparently you wouldn't be able to go online again. Someone then released a video of how to jailbreak the PS3 and install the features that were available and advertised prior to the update. He was then sued and Sony won the rights to every IP address that ever visited the man's site or viewed his videos. Which means Sony were the one who broke privacy. Anyone who had visited the website or viewed the video were then able to be sued as well.

Sub-groups of anonymous then attacked PSN and shut it down and are claiming they will continue to keep it down until their demands are met which go something along the lines of this:
    - Sony are to restore the features that were available prior to the update.
    - They are to stop any lawsuits against people who altered a product THEY own.
    - Sony are to leave the people who's IP addresses they have alone.

Sorry if this has been said in the thread.

Though do not claim this as 100% accurate, I am simply stating the most clear answer there is. And to be honest I am very disappointed at the way Sony are treating this and how they and the media have over-exaggerated this as if the people who hacked PSN have everyones information and will take all of their money and bomb their houses.

    This is just my opinion.

Sony is the one whose been battling with hackers to stop it entirely basically. they've taken a very strong stance on the subject and that has angered some of these immature hackers that do things like this. They think its their right to hack or something.

Microsoft didn't do it when they got hacked years ago. Its so easy to hack Microsoft stuff that they don't really bother and only really make their most important stuff (like databases and such) very secure. Without P.O.ed hackers, there's no initiative to try to and break the systems like they did with Sony.

In the end, its the fault of immature hackers.

It'd be cool if they decided to go ahead and announce a new game at the same time :P
