    Introduction

It had taken quite the melding of pop culture universes (in a style befitting Tommy Westphall), but Pop Culture Asylum was officially open to help rehabilitate famous figures in popular culture. Everyone from worlds as diverse as Harry Potter and That's So Raven had carted their most 'problematic' characters here for rest and rehabilitation. Under the specialist supervision of fellow pop culture doctors and nurses, the idea was to bring a sense of normalcy to the craziness of their previous roles. And it was all going to plan... for a few hours.

What no one had told the patients (and some of the staff) however, was that patients who didn't fall in line with the Asylum's strict rules and procedures for rehabilitation would be lobotomised during the night. When the Joker was roaming the corridors looking for playing cards and matches (to, you know, burn the place to the ground), he accidentally stumbled upon the Lobotomy Room. Appalled by the hypocrisy on display - lobotomies have no place in rehabilitative medicine! - he hijacked the speaker system, broadcasted the location of the Lobotomy Room to the entire hospital, then opened a canister of Amnesia Gas* into the vents, and permanently unlocked the patients' cell doors. As you could imagine, chaos reigned.

The Asylum staff who were committed to their evil goal of total lobotomisation managed to escape to a secure vent-free location before the Amnesia Gas was let off. Clemmy Johnson, Paul Blart and Harry Callahan - the patient cops - also managed to use their police training to find a safe space. Everyone else had some degree of memory loss once the gas cleared, and was unable to tell who was friend and who was foe. Even some of the doctors and nurses had had their memories wiped.

The Governor, fresh from battling the walking dead before being sent to Pop Culture Asylum, led the charge that the patients should take a hold of the asylum themselves, and lobotomise those who were planning to lobotomise them. Dr. Frasier Crane agreed, but cautioned that casualties would ensue, as the patients and allies couldn't completely trust one another. The Asylum staff, led by Natalie 'Fig' Figueroa vowed to keep up their mission; if the patients wanted to lobotomise themselves - who were they to stop them? They'd even continue in their plan to lobotomise unruly patients at night. And Charles Manson thought there was nothing like a good cult to ride out hard times.

Welcome to Pop Culture Asylum. Things are gonna get a bit crazy, dontcha think?

    Outline

For those new to Mafia, here's the sitch. Everyone is split into teams: the uninformed majority (the Innocents) against the informed minority (the Mafia). The aim of the game is simple: the Innocents must try and identify and kill all the Mafia players concealed among them whilst the Mafia try to become the majority in the game, outnumbering the Innocents to win. Complicating matters are a number of third parties who have their own win conditions.

The game has two phases, day and night. During the night phase, this thread will be considered "locked" and no one can post in the thread. The Mafia, however, can talk in a dedicated Discord chat to decide who gets killed in that night. At the start of the day phase, the player that the Mafia chose to kill will be announced, and everyone tries to determine who is a Mafia member. However, during the day, the Mafia are hidden within the Innocents, trying to steer their vote away from themselves. At the end of the day, the lobotomy target is confirmed, their role is revealed and the night phase starts again.

At the start of the game, roles will be randomly assigned to players. In this game, everyone's a little bit crazy, and no one is vanilla! Everyone has some sort of special ability that can help or hinder their team (mostly used during the night phase, called Night Actions). These abilities may used to gather information, harm a player, save a player, generally fuck shit up etc. More details are given below.

For more information about Mafia in general, please read this very helpful guide produced by Salzorrah/gunner.
    Patients and allies

The patients (as well as the hospital staff that remain dedicated to their rehabilitation) are the uninformed majority in the game. They win by lobotomising all their enemies. (Pop cultural properties are in brackets after each role, for the unfamiliar.)

    Dr. Frasier Crane (Frasier)
Frasier has given up his call-in radio show at KACL and now tends to the needy at Pop Culture Asylum. Each night, he can choose one person to save from death or poison.

    Dr. Jennifer Melfi (The Sopranos)
No longer providing reluctant counsel to Tony Soprano, Dr. Melfi now specialises in cult prevention therapy at Pop Culture Asylum. Each night, she can visit one person. Through the power of intense psychotherapy, she can prevent a player from joining the Manson family, or bring them out of the cult. Melfi herself can't be culted.

    Nurse Carol Hathaway (ER)
Just when she thought being married to Doug Ross wasn't enough, Nurse Hathaway wanted a new challenge. Each night in Pop Culture Asylum, she can choose one person to save from death. However, any role that she visits will be roleblocked.

Clemmy Johnson (Reno 911) / Paul Blart (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) / Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry)
Three different cops who've been sent to the nuthouse for various reasons. Even secluded from the rest of the world, however, they've still got jobs to do! Each night, they can each choose to visit one person. One cop is confused, and will receive a random report. One cop is paranoid, and will always receive guilty reports. One cop is insane, and will always receive reports that are the opposite alignment of the person they investigated. However, no one will know which cop is which, even upon death. The cops will have their own Discord chat to compare notes of their investigations.

Blanche DuBois (A Streetcar Named Desire)
Who'd have thought that the ending of A Streetcar Named Desire would lead Blanche to this place!? This Southern belle can, each night, choose to visit one person, blocking their role through her feminine wiles and/or contraband alcohol.

    Raven Baxter (That's So Raven)
Things are not so Raven? anymore for Ms. Baxter, what with her being holed up in Pop Culture Asylum. She's still getting her visions, though. Each night, she'll have a vision which can tell a tale of (i) three people, at least one of whom is an Asylum staff member, or (ii) one person who is a confirmed Patient. If she's visited at night, however, she won't get a vision. Sorry, girlfriend!

    Kelly Bailey (Misfits)
This misfit may be back in the penitentiary, but her telepathic skills are still in full force. She can send anonymous messages to any player, but won't know that player's role or alignment.

    Father Jack Hackett (Father Ted)
Craggy Island's most infamous priest is out of DRINK! While visiting his private liquor cabinet, he will learn which characters visited him during that night.

    The Governor (The Walking Dead)
No longer dealing with the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, the Governor is the de facto leader of the patients at Pop Culture Asylum. Once per game, he can override a lobotomy vote.

    Norman Bates (Psycho/Bates Motel)
His best friend may be his mother, but now he's in a home away from home. Each night, he can choose to watch one person, and will learn who visited that person that night. This does not count as a 'visit' for other night action purposes.

    Kitty Sanchez (Arrested Development)
The world's worst secretary to the Bluth Company. If ever killed during the night, voting will be completely disabled the following day. Will we say goodbye to these, Michael!?

    Mongo (Blazing Saddles)
Mongo only pawn in game of life. Each night, he can visit one person. If he visits the same person the Asylum staff tries to kill, there is a 50/50 chance of either an Asylum staff member dying or Mongo dying.

    Emily Dickinson (IRL)
Yes, that one. The famously reclusive poet would rather not take part in the pandemonium, and crafts a key each night. She can give said key to any chosen player (including herself), who can then lock themselves in their house during any night of the game. That player is roleblocked for that night and can not be visited. Giving a key does not count as a 'visit' for other night action purposes.

    Sophia Petrillo (The Golden Girls)
Years of living with the rest of the Golden Girls (and her Sicilian mob connections on the outside) have made this dotty granny a force to be reckoned with. As such, anyone who visits her at night will receive a swift and unmerciful death. Don't mess with Sophia!

    Feathers McGraw (The Wrong Trousers)
This penguin robbed many a bank and museum whilst disguised as a chicken. No longer, Feathers! Each night, he is able to "waddle" over to someone and tell them a randomly generated secret about another player.
    Asylum staff

Asylum staff members are the informed minority in this game, committed to lobotomising all of the patients and their allies. They share a chat on a Discord server where they can coordinate their moves and kills. They win when all forces opposing them are dead, or nothing can prevent this from happening, while at least one member is alive.

Natalie Figueroa (Orange is the New Black)
Fig's moved up in the world; no longer executive assistant to the warden at Litchfield Penitentiary, she's now Warden in her own right! As warden, she can override a lobotomy vote once during the game.

    Dr. Evil (Austin Powers)
With a name like that, what did you expect? Having failed to destroy Austin Powers, Dr. Evil now spends his days concocting poisons for patients at Pop Culture Asylum. Each night, he can visit one person, poisoning the selected player. Poisoned players will die a day later, and know they are poisoned. Drs. Frasier Crane and Nick Riviera can heal poison.

Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)
Fresh out of supervising Salem State Hospital, Nurse Ratched now does the rounds in a more relaxed environment. Each night, she can visit one person, blocking their role through antipsychotics or other means.

    Peter Pettigrew (Harry Potter)
Wormtail's back, baby! Everyone's favourite Animagus/agent of Voldemort acts as an agent of the Asylum staff. He can send anonymous messages to any character, but won't know that character's identity.

Marie Laveau (American Horror Story: Coven)
An outside contractor transported from one American Horror Story to another. Each night, she chooses a word and a player. If the chosen player says the chosen word in the following day phase, they will die instantly.
    Agents of Chaos

These third party roles will attempt to wreak havoc in the asylum. Their win conditions are detailed below.

    The Joker (Batman)
Some men just want to watch the world burn. Upon being lobotomised during the day, he will win the game.

    Charles Manson (IRL)
Yes, that one. Each night he can visit one person, who is then recruited into the Manson Family, losing their previously held abilities. If Manson is killed, all Family members will die. If Manson is unculted by Dr. Melfi, the Family will disband, and Manson will become a vanilla patient. If the Family outnumber everyone else, they win.

    Dr. Nick Riviera (The Simpsons)
Springfield's most idiotic doctor doesn't know which side he supports! At the start of the game, he'll be sided with a random alignment. He'll then switch alignments every night. When sided with the Patients, each night he can save one person. When sided with the Asylum staff, each night he can poison one person. Because of his bungling nature, however, each night action has a 50% chance of success.
    Rules and Mechanics

    1. Please be civil to one another. This is only a game; we're not opening the Ark of the Covenant.
    2. Each day phase will last approximately 48 hours, and each night phase will last approximately 24 hours.
    3. Unless stated, you can't target yourself with your Night Action.
    4. Lynch votes must be written in the format of [#LOBOTOMISE] Username.* If you want to change your vote, you must use the format [#UNVOTE] Username. Not following this format will result in your vote not being counted.
    5. Votes for a no lynch/abstaining are NOT allowed.
    6. A tied lynch vote will result in a coin toss to determine who gets lynched.
    7. Missing two consecutive lynch votes will result in your removal from the game.
    8. Do not share PMs for any reason. If you do, you will be removed from the game immediately.
    9. All important game conversation should be kept in the game thread, or in any relevant Discord chat.
    10. If you are dead, please stay dead. Don't post or 'like' any new posts. You do get to post a single "death post" that may not contain any game-related information.
    11. Posting in the night phase is not allowed, unless stated otherwise.
    12. Any questions? I'm all ears. PM or message me on Discord (Mr Cat Dog#8817), please.
    13. Have fun! Yes, this is a rule.
*Or lobotomize... whatever. Not going to be a grammar Nazi on this.

  • Damn this is gonna be crazy!
    I'm in.

I've got a question btw. Joker description says he will win the game if lobotomized. Does that include the staff's nightly lobotomizing (aka mafia kill) ?

  • Added everyone so far. Would like to have as close to 25 people join as possible but know that might not happen; tell your friends, call your parents, let EVERYONE know. There'll be a break around Christmas time if you think your activity may reduce around then, so don't let that be an excuse! :D

Standard jester role, so... no. Will make that a bit clearer in the post. Thanks for the spot.

  • Gotta start eventually!

    +1

I guess if it'll help fill up slots
That's the spirit (albeit for entirely different reasons). Everyone new has been added, and one person has been removed.

I'm not planning on starting the game until Saturday/Sunday at the earliest, as I've got a busy week at work and I gather that a large number of users have exams this week. So there's still lots of time to sign up, if you haven't already.
