The last time I went RPing my motives were questioned a lot. And my character was acting weird. Really weird.
There's something we have in common, then, ha!

I'll tag onto Ech's really good point about moves vs. natural capabilities; personally, I don't consider moves to be anything more than a convenience, a human-created concept to categorize "acceptable" techniques for activities like battling. Every "new" move is really just a different, discovered way to apply a Pokemon's natural abilities in that sort of context. It would mean both Mightyena and Grumpig could technically bite someone but only Mightyena would get any real mileage from using its teeth in a fight, so "Bite" is registered as one of its possible moves. You could even say Pokemon like Gardevoir that can create black holes are forbidden from using a move like "Black Hole" because of how destructive to the Pokemon or the surrounding environment unleashing that sort of unthinkable chaos could be.

None of this at all "canon", I don't think. Just wanted to throw my interpretation in while it was sort of relevant.

But a question for Kiyo: I was brainstorming earlier; are the prompts themselves canon? Are we actually describing a moment in our character's lives, or just a hypothetical one?

And what are your thoughts on OHKO moves 'cause some evolved Pokemon get them at Lv. 1. Mwahaha!

This isn't the first place that I thought I would post on this forum, but anyways...

I am interested, for all my newbie account is worth. I do have roleplaying experience and I am excited by this unique idea. To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of playing as Pokemon, but you have some pretty cool ideas and now I have a fun character in mind. Anyways, I hope I can contribute to the fun, and waiter rivalry subterfuge.

Edited to sound more like myself. XD

I am interested, for all my faceless account is worth. I do have roleplaying experience and I am excited by this unique idea. To be honest, I was a little turned off by playing as Pokemon, but you've made me rethink that and now I have a fun character in mind. Anyways, I hope I can contribute to the fun, and waiter rivalry subterfuge.

You... are giving off an insalubrious vibe that's a blend of Orx and myself. All I ask is of you is to spare the children.

Actually, forget that, just terrorize everyone equally and you'll be friends with them all. 8D

I feel like I might have mis introduced myself a little wrong. I'm pretty easy going and not at all intimidating, and try to be nice as a rule. Hopefully I didn't come off a negative way, and I don't plan to terrorize anyone. ;D

  • Some broad examples are Pokemon that are primarily known for cutting -- does this make listing moves like Slash or Cut completely redundant? Also, what if there's are some cases where the entry details the Mon being able to do something that was never seen in any given medium -- e.g., Gardevoir literally being able to create Black Holes. I imagine this is NOT allowed for this RP considering how ludicrously overpowered it is.
I don't consider moves to be anything more than a convenience, a human-created concept to categorize "acceptable" techniques for activities like battling. My original thought was trying to negotiate between the two concepts, but Ech is ultimately correct, that idea does have its pitfalls. I love, love Disclosed's concept, and I think it'd be way more efficient to go with those ideas.

But a question for Kiyo: I was brainstorming earlier; are the prompts themselves canon? Are we actually describing a moment in our character's lives, or just a hypothetical one?

Hm! I toyed with this idea, and was leaning towards the hypothetical angle, but it might be a bit of fun to make a mini competition of sorts! Like, whoever has the most impressive prompt or version of that particular prompt makes it canon. It's just a thought, and I have a weird feeling that it might lower morale. But it could be fun.

If I don't go through with it, it'd be hypothetical. Don't want too many people with incredibly similar recent histories.

And what are your thoughts on OHKO moves 'cause some evolved Pokemon get them at Lv. 1. Mwahaha!

I think it might be safe to ban all four of them (Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, Sheer Cold.) There are plenty of low-power alternatives that generally get the same effect across without completely decimating whoever it might be used on.

Hello to both of you, and congratulations on your first post, Joe! dont know why you joined a pokemon forum if youre not a fan of pokemon but whatever

Regardless of how skilled you think you are, both of you are more than encouraged to toss your hat in the ring when the official thread pops up! Even if you don't quite make the cut with your SU, you'll find plenty of acceptance in the OOC.

I'm sure you'll find Mr. Who's Kiyo? is quite the agreeable GM to work with here.

Aaah, thank you! Glad I shared!

Fuck you. I mean, I respect your decision based upon your reasonable rationale. I feel its the stigma, though, that draws me towards moves like "Fissure" over something like "Earthquake". Pure intimidation factor. But, uh, I'm pretty sure "Guillotine" is literal decapitation... since that's really the only way you can interpret the use of that word. Does that mean I can guillotine my fellow coworkers with Crush Claw instead?

And would it really be an incentive if I didn't want the incident unveiled in my response to be canon? I feel, unless applicants are all on the same page regarding the reason why they've made their prompt choice, it wouldn't truly feel like a contest.

Did I say I was excited? I'm very excited, to start fleshing out my entry and to see what other ideas my fellow forum-goers have! This is one of those RPs I know I'll like reading through the submitted sign-ups just as much as I enjoy writing mine.

I'd probably seem rude if I didn't greet Joe. HI, JOE! When I abandon the site again, you can take my spot, kk?

I getchu, but also causing the earth to split the restaurant in half or slicing the head off your co-workers would be grounds to have you to immediately fired and imprisoned. I feel OHKO moves are kinda like unrestrained versions of things like Earthquake or Cut, like they are pure, uncontrollable elemental powers.

There are other moves that can accomplish the stigma, I feel. Get creative!

    yes

2tru. Nevermind on the idea then, I never was particularly sold on it in the first place.

Me, too! I really hope a lot of people submit so there's lots of group possibilities.

Speaking of fun to read, since you gave me a great idea for an NPC off-thread, I'd like to open the floor for any suggestions of NPC characters that'll be in the restaurant.

If you're opening NPC ideas, I'll throw in my--and it's Ech's too--idea regarding a lesbian Salazzle food critic whose natural tendency to attract the opposite sex has gotten her stepped upon quite a number of times, explaining her abrasive temperament. Mandibuzz would also likely fit the role of a food critic and token lesbian, if not simply for the irony of a carrion-eater giving its two cents on a legitimate meal.

Should I also reveal my idea of a flamboyant Chandelure who traditionally conceals his bouncer-esque position by resembling an inanimate chandelier in this thread? oops i just did

Either a Honckkrow or Skuntank pimp would be natch and Skuntank and Persian also make a good "themed" pair in my eyes.

A Pyukumuku anything is required as well.

And, finally, the two contemptible escorts of an aristocratic business mogul who assume speech on the golden Magikarp's behalf whilst toting the taciturn Pokemon about in his bowl. I'm thinking they could be opposite-gendered Meowstic?

  • Hey, all! I'm hard at work making creative missions and interesting events/characters. All is well.

I have a new question, however: after inventing some Intrigue Plots and split-off missions that drive them, it quickly became evident that they (along with player and NPC secrets) were gonna be the bread and butter of this game. There are a total of 5 darkly-tempered Intrigue Plots, each named after a certain genre that describes them: CRIME MYSTERY, ROMANTIC COMEDY, HISTORICAL FICTION, SURREAL HORROR, and SCI-FI THRILLER.

That established, my question is this: since there are five players, and five plots, would it be a good idea to place a section in the app where you choose what plot you'd like your character to follow in descending order of preference?
    >> e.g. PLOT -- I'd want to be the Mystery plot the most, then Historical, Comedy, Sci-Fi, and lastly Horror.
Because they way I'm envisioning it now might leave the Intrigue plots unfinished or broken, or open up the possibility for everyone to crowd in around one or two and break them that way. The only thing functionally that would change in the mechanics is that players would be assigned their duties every hour rather than choosing them, and I'd take out that ability to make custom missions (which I was gonna do anyway at this rate.) You'd still be doing restaurant-themed missions of course, you're on duty: it's just that their optional objectives and consequences are strongly related to one background plot in particular that surrounds your character.

On one hand, this rings almost restrictive to me. However, I see a lot of good in it: missions and plots would be way more personally tailored and challenge the player intimately for a richer experience (not to mention take out all the potential mess that could come out of people trying to claim missions or whatnot) and make Intrigue Plots and mission assignments focused and far less messy to handle. And it's not like those plots don't have plenty of choice within them - what you do and how you do it/react within your plot affects it and you, whether you actively participate in optional objectives or not.

And if anybody doesn't want anything to do with these darker shades of the fantastical, and wants a SLICE-OF-LIFE experience, I could make that a "plot" with fun missions as well and add a sixth slot to the player roster. :)

Now, I know what you're thinking: inactivity would bone this idea sideways. On that: in the case of inactive vegging, the new incoming character would be placed right where the last one left off, with all their buffs and knowledge and such. I suppose we could write out the first one or just retcon as necessary.

I would still have missions that multiple people could work on and allow lots of intersecting paths (as some of the plots would intersect quite a bit at times) and dialogue opportunities with other players, obviously. But I'd love some feedback or questions on this potential change.

    NPC Ideas you say? Hrah!

    You will regret having asked.

    >that said these are only ideas to the wind feel free to use/not use them in any way or magnitude you see fit, or better yet take them as a means to rev your own creativity into making something even I would not have suggested

I mean, the most appealing thing to be about On the Menu is that promise of unique character interaction, whether it be through camaraderie or constant sabotage, so the idea of designating characters to a certain Plot, I feel, will take away from the feeling of connectivity. The impression I got from the original post was really that any combination of characters could work together to get to the bottom of a mystery or try to selfishly find the solution to themselves. What I'm getting at is, if everyone has their own mystery to solve, we start entering personal-novella territory where everyone's in their own little interpretation of Finer Things.

Not to say I don't like the idea of genre-themed Intrigue Plots, because it's super cute, but if we get to claim one from the get-go, the roleplay becomes a lot more "standard", y'know? Like that old roleplay, Riders: here's an element, fight for it. I also feel like characters will be more "defined" by the plot they choose, like their writers have the impression they need to sign up with a "Romantic Comedy" character or a "Horror" character.

The idea of a "Slice of Life" character that is naturally estranged from the rest of the cast, in the end, solidifies my stance against making the Intrigue Plots this influential. Of course there might be a character who naturally drifts away from the rest if the idea is dropped, and that'll happen naturally. It's a nice option for someone who wants to get a different sort of experience but, frankly, if that's not what you made your rolepay for, Kiyo, I wouldn't force it. In the end, it would just limit someone to a certain role outside of the main events as well. I hate decided roles in roleplays. I hate meticulously-organized casts where half the characters are male and the other half is female and each has their own little "theme" because that goes against what roleplay really is: writing a story with other people who bring their own ideas and writing styles to create a memorable experience.

Honestly, I might be misinterpreting your intentions, and I apologize if this comes across as a super-pessimistic interpretation on my behalf, but if this RP sells its soul to monotony before it even begins, I'm gonna make like a tree.

(You can call me "negative", now, Discord onlookers, lol)

This is a really good point, because I felt there was something off about my initial idea but couldn't quite name it. The problem with my idea here is that I'm making the Intrigue Plots way too exclusive rather inclusive. After all, if I wanted to write precise events and precise plots, I would just write fanfiction.

I'll work more on getting all the mysteries a little tighter together and more related to one another, so even if you're pursuing one or doing a mission strongly related to one, you'll nonetheless affect others by consequence, to really emphasize interactivity of the environment and eachother's goals.

Hm, just had an idea where you can devise an event to happen to another person.

No shade against GMs of other roleplays intended but sometimes you gotta ask yourself, "Is this roleplay for me or am I making it for other people to enjoy, too?"

Thank you for considering my perspective, by the way. 'ppreciate ya.

OOHH OOH, AND I HAVE ANOTHER NPC IDEA: A Machamp vine star who the other "legitimate" celebrities look down on but who is equally as successful. When he whips, he uses all four of his arms.
