I'd keep going, sometimes they'll take more than average. It sucks. :( I had a shiny charm RE encounter take 10k once!

I didn't count how many SRs for chimchar because I was doing it on vacation and didn't have my calculator with me.

If you want to SR a different game I would definitely go with HG/SS... The starters show up shiny before you choose them so you can see all three of them before SRing and I think you can save right before you look at them so it's a LOT faster. In platinum there's a ton of dialogue before you get to see if your starter is shiny or not... it takes a long time.

However if you're looking at diamond I believe d/p are both really cheap on amazon used... so if cost is a factor I think HG/SS still hold their value really well.
