Basically, it's if your friend had the guide and you didn't, so you'd call him, tell him what game you were playing and where you were "Is it before, or after you fight the three-headed Dragon? Oh, you haven't gotten that far? Okay, well you were supposed to speak with the old man at Brick Out city then he would..." Kind of like that, but you could also write letters to them and they'd respond too. It wasn't like you called them and reached someone in a third world country that barely spoke English (no offense to those people). It was pretty personal like they'd say good job or "You got that far on your own? Sweet!Here's what to do next!" just like speaking to your buddy down the street. But writting letters was probably the cheaper of the two ways. I don't think there will ever be another service like the Game Pros ever again. It was a really unique thing to see and behold.
