That depends on who gets inside the tower, really.
I don't watch that much anime - two or three episodes a day - anymore, and its my second main interest after video games, so it's not difficult to talk about it. I don't have much knowledge about the industry in general, but I've watched a reasonable number of shows now, I guess.
Fans aren't the problem, fandoms are. Sure, fans make fandoms, but I've had many a civilised and intelligent discussion with fans of certain shows in the past...it's when you put them together that they start trying to crucify you for disagreeing with them. Fandoms are toxic things that unequivocally ruin the enjoyment of whatever their target is. As far as I'm concerned, people who think a fandom isn't that bad either hasn't interacted enough with it or agrees with the general viewpoints it tends to hold to. On an individual basis a lot of fans who might be horrible in a group setting are fairly reasonable. Generally speaking.
It's what everyone wants, I suppose. Romance has been a glorified subject in media for god knows how long, and it's practically ingrained into society, so much so that people don't even notice it. This goes for the West as well as the East, albeit in slightly different fashions. The why of that depends on who you ask. I don't know if it's something people genuinely want or want because they feel they are expected to want it, but such is life. I suppose some people, like us, reach a point where we look for character depth rather than a wish-fulfilment idealised true love fantasy.
No accounting for taste, I suppose. A lot of people don't really care about depth - they just want to be entertained, and entertainment means different things to different people. It's a little depressing that people don't really criticise shows, but...well, fandoms. Arguing with fandoms is a quick way to make yourself unpopular, and nobody likes being unpopular. In a way, I can relate to wanting a simpler approach sometimes I suppose. I play a lot of JRPGs but I like to relax with a visual novel or Warriors title every now and then, and I have feel-good anime I watch when I don't want to think too much too.
Tropes are tools, though. Not necessarily a bad thing. Although in anime they often do translate into a bad thing because the trope is all there is to a character.
I suppose the scarcity of these things is what makes them special. If everyone did it then it would only be a matter of time before that became samey and boring as well.
