I'm going to guess an idea using carbon-based materials as opposed to silicon is that our biology is carbon-based, thus making our technology more biologically-compatible (another way of saying more conducive to human health)?
I suppose one could argue that the cost of producing electricity could be reduced (and more sustainable); however, I am a bit more concerned with human health than economic implications of such technology.
