Ash is Smart and quite brave, the "stupid" things he does sometimes is just because of exictment. Take the Johto league when he faced Gary, he was focused, cool and sophisticated.. so to answer your question, yes Ash is Smart

Well, he does have a 5th grade education level, he left a 10 to become a trainer. He is stupid, winnig by luck, forgetting the most basic things, releasing strong pokemon*coughPidgeotPrimeapecough*, not capturing pokemon he sees for a stupid reason, but that's his way.The only thing I don't like about him is all that cheesy mumbo jumbo of pokemon are friends and a pokemon can be strong if you work hard enough, oh yeah like luck is with you forever.

I think he's smart just for the fact that he's not trying to destroy everyone out there. He wants to have a good time while following his dream. Any smart person would do that. He knows when to quit and what's best for his pokes. Maybe that would define compassion, but is there ultimatly a difference?

He doesnt listen to anyone and rushes off when his not supposed to, that makes him stupid and arrogant, thinking he can save everyone that is stupid imho.

Well, it all depends on your perception about whether Ash is smart or not. Those who hate him will tend to say really negative things about him most of the time and those who like him tend to heap praise on him. Note that I never put the word 'always' since even those who hate him might grudgingly admit that he has his good points and those who like him might admit that he is kinda dumb at times.

I for one, think that he's above the average trainer when it comes to unorthodox strategies but on certain basics, he actually makes the beginner's mistakes. Meaning on certain accounts, he's smart, but on others, he's clueless. =/

.

From my perspective Ash is not very traditionally masculine and although this may seem seriosuyl like a stretch and I am not even saying its bad but I honestly thing it is implied in the cartoon he is probably homosexual or bisexual. I am not being homophobic keep in mind I have friends who are gay I just think that the character is based on someone who is likely gay. Not because he seems to even have much of a sexual side to the character but his temperament and attitude when it comes to battle is more feminine that most others.

Regardless of anything, Ash is generally smarter than Team Rocket. :P

note: Team Rocket = Jesse and James
note 2: I used to the word "generally" for a reason

I only watched the first two or three seasons. But if I remember right, this is how a typical battle went for ash.

Ash sends out his pokemon, and opponent sends out theirs

Ash gets his but whooped the entire match, but he gets 1 lucky hit at the end and for some reason that wins the battle for him.

It seems that ash is most of the time not so smart, but I guess he smart enough to make the most out of a lucky situation :P

I think because he is more feminine he doesn't believe in himself or feel like he could get a real job or do something really powerful like most males feel like they can. So maybe he just has some things in himself he needs to realize you know. Just my two cents,

Yeah, same in my opinion. When Misty left, I think he went gay with Brock. =\ But what does that have to do with how smart dumb he is?

Satoshi is arrogant and rash. Typical shonen main character :/ ZOMG LOOK THE POKEMON IS FALLING, LETS JUMP OFF A CLIFF TO SAVE IT :o

Haha, true xD

Ash is selfish and selfless at the same time. And smart/lucky and dumb/silly at the same time as well. I still don't think he is a realistic character.

I don't think he is realistic either, it's almost like he is just a cartoon that they made up to entertain kids.

I'm not even gonna go into the sexism here, but this basically goes against that he's supposed to be arrogant. He risks his life for Pokemon, goes on and on about how he'll win the next badge, but he is not confident in himself?

He is smart and imaginative when it comes to pokemon battles. This is proven since he has defeated legendary pokemon before. Yet ironically he could not beat even 1 pokemon of the elite four or win in the johto, kanto, or hoen leagues.

He is selfless and rash when it involves a pokemon in danger or something he wants to catch. He is dumb when it comes to a girl that likes him, (Misty and Anabel) but that happens to a lot of anime. and he is TOTALLY stupid when it comes to team rocket (Oh come on they've been trying to catch his pickachu in what seemed like forever but he still kept falling for their lame disguises)

He needs to think before he acts well that my .2cents, he acts before he thinks more so he uses less brain power, he may have good battle tactics but when it comes to social interactions his hopeless.

That depends. I think he's pretty smart about Pokemon, I mean, the show has to make him look pretty stupid so everyone else can "learn" along with him. When it comes to girls he's an absolute moron though.
