The poll is intended to be an average.

So, alcohol has had its ups and downs in (at least) North American society. It was acceptable, then it was prohibited (due to violence and other things), and then it was permitted once again for lawful consumption after the age of nineteen in most Canadian provinces, eighteen in Quebec, and I don't really know for the USA since I do not live there.

But thus, the purpose of this topic!

    General Questions

    • What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    • → Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
    • What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
    • Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
    • Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DUI/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
    • → Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?
    • When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
    • Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
    • What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?

    For People Who Drink

    • At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
    • What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
    • Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
    • Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
    • What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
    • Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
    • Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
    • Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
    • What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
    • → Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?

For People Who Do Not Drink

    • What is the reason (or are the reasons) for not consuming alcohol (religious, personal, etc.)?
    • How does it feel when/if you're around people who are consuming alcohol?
    • What kind of societal pressures have you faced, if any (peer pressure, advertisements, etc.)?
    • Has your dedication to the non-consumption of alcohol caused you to be excluded from certain events, gatherings, etc?
    • Have you ever merely tasted alcohol and made the decision never to do so again?
    • → And, if you've never even tasted alcohol, have you been enticed to do so just for the experience?

I drink socially. I don't go out much, and I hate the atmosphere at parties, clubs, bars, raves, etc. I prefer to drink in the comfort of my own home with people I know and trust.

I personally prefer vodka, especially Vex. It's 7% and 12,00$ for six bottles (taxes in, deposits in), and I feel fuzzy just drinking one. I like the Electrifying Lemonade flavour (blue box) because it only vaguely tastes like alcohol, so it's really, really easy to drink; almost too easy.

Where I live, the legal age is nineteen, but Ottawa is so close to Gatineau, QC (where the law is eighteen) that people just cross the river to legally purchase alcohol there and then illegally consume it in Ontario. OttawaU is known as a "party school" because of this loophole / these delinquents.

The first time I tried alcohol, I was nine or so. My dad let me taste his beer, and it tasted like pee. Beer still tastes like pee to me. After that, I had some vodka at sixteen or so, and I got pretty drunk that night, but not black-out drunk or stupid drunk. Just drunk. I got super drunk about five weeks ago in the company of my boyfriend, but typically I just drink for the fuzzies: a bottle, and then none more.

I've been drinking more recently due to depression. I'm not an alcoholic, but I do tend to consume a bottle of 355mL @ 7%/day because of isolation and loneliness. Just makes me feel fuzzy and passes the time.

I've only ever had one hangover, and that was two or three months ago. I was trying to socialize and was caught up in drinking games: beer pong, bottle hockey, etc. Before that, I had a full bottle of wine to myself over seven or eight hours (maybe more), and then had mojitos and vodka later on until about 4am. Had to wake up at 7am; it was honestly the most wretched experience ever, and really turned me off alcohol for a while.

I don't think I've ever done anything stupidly dumb while drunk. I don't typically get drunk enough to lose self-awareness or to shadow my self-consciousness. The funniest time I had, though, was five weeks ago after binging on six 355mL bottles of Vex @ 7% in less than an hour, and I fell out of an armchair and just laid on the floor and had an uncontrollable gigglefit for about twenty minutes. I hit my head, but I was just so cracked up about it. I dunno lol

    I don't drink
    From personal experience:

What is the reason (or are the reasons) for not consuming alcohol (religious, personal, etc.)? - seeing family members drinking, arguing (verbally abusive), almost fighting - then not remembering the next day - that emotional pain (me as the non drinker) doesn't go away, and having younger brother and sister makes me not want to drink, not want to start.

How does it feel when/if you're around people who are consuming alcohol? - embarrassed being around them, I just try my best not to be around them, or be seeing next to them

What kind of societal pressures have you faced, if any (peer pressure, advertisements, etc.)? none I guess

Has your dedication to the non-consumption of alcohol caused you to be excluded from certain events, gatherings, etc? - not at all, been to many events where they sell alcohol, I just don't buy any

Have you ever merely tasted alcohol and made the decision never to do so again? not at all, the smell alone is enough to make me stay away.

And, if you've never even tasted alcohol, have you been enticed to do so just for the experience? - that smell and the attitude of the drunk person will never make me drink alcohol - and don't want to face the consequences of alcohol.

So many questions ;; I'll just answer some of them

Quite frankly, I don't really care. People would drink either way.

    General Questions

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    21.

Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
18 makes sense. If you're old enough to fight for your country and are otherwise emancipated, there's no reason the law should be governing things like alcohol and marijuana for adults, period. Most people do it anyway before 21, so um… what's the point, again?

What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
I don't know what this means.

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
One of my maternal aunts (Janet) is a dysfunctional alcoholic, my landlady is a functional alcoholic, one of my mother's friends from high school (and her father/brother, too) were also functionals, and most everyone else I know are just social drinkers.

Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
    DIY? As in do-it-yourself? I didn't know that was a crime. o.o

Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?
Not really. Janet Planet is a lot of fun to be with for the first few weeks, but after that you just want to send her back to Ohio for a year and never look at her.

When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
    At home with friends.

Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
People are going to drink it regardless of its legality; the Prohibition proved that its outlawing backfires big time.

What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
Other than the age limit, none.

    For People Who Drink

At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
A few weeks ago for Independunce Day. Had four fingers of vodka mixed with this nasty-ass grapefruit juice, ♥♥♥♥ed me up.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
Depression, life just ramming me up the ass. You know, ♥♥♥♥ that makes you want to forget.

Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
    Nope.

Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
Doing things yourself isn't illegal in the United States last I recall, and I've never had a DUI/DWI before since I don't drive.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
♥♥♥♥, lol. I'm just all around crazy drunk, nothing in particular. I give people a good laugh all around.

Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
    o_O

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
    o_O

Have you ever had a hangover?
    Nope

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
Rum and vodka mixed with different things. Other than white wine a lot of grape-based stuff just tastes buttery to me, and beer is just ew.

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol? 21.
Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way? like 18 or so would be adequate.
What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed? either 'you're cool' or 'this person is a monster'
Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible? plenty of my family does and plenty of my friends do. I've never seen the majority of my friends drunk, and my family is all more or less responsible.
Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel? nope.
→ Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol? This Question Is Not Applicable
When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion? really it totally depends on the person. you could drink in your home with only a couple of your close friends but you could also then see a knife and Stab Them. and you could drink in a club filled with a ♥♥♥♥ton of people and be totally calm and not boisterous at all. it depends on the person. yeah.
Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption? yes, there are plenty of people who are plenty responsible.
What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why? make the age limit younger because 21 is too high IMHFO.

What is the reason (or are the reasons) for not consuming alcohol (religious, personal, etc.)? there is no reason other than the fact that it's not easily obtainable for me. I have some self-control, or at least I think I do, so I think I'd be fine drinking; have no idea how I'd act though. I have no deep-seated issues with it, and I'm fine with people that do. it's also kinda intimidating to me for some reason.
How does it feel when/if you're around people who are consuming alcohol? people can do whatever they want and as long as they're not harming others/me then I D G A F
    What kind of societal pressures have you faced, if any (peer pressure, advertisements, etc.)? haven't really faced much peer pressure because the majority of my friends are nerds and I don't hang out much with the ones that do drink. (;
Has your dedication to the non-consumption of alcohol caused you to be excluded from certain events, gatherings, etc? no
Have you ever merely tasted alcohol and made the decision never to do so again? no, I've had wine before and I enjoy it. I'm gonna be that guy who drinks wine and reads books in his spare time. it's gonna be hot.
→ And, if you've never even tasted alcohol, have you been enticed to do so just for the experience? out of curiosity more like.

I don't drink. I actually recall a similar thread on here several years ago, when I was 19, and several people said I would grow up and start drinking just like everyone else, and that I was just naive... I'm almost 23, still haven't tried alcohol once.

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    21

Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
I think lowering it to 18 would make more sense.

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
My dad drinks a little bit. Wine with dinner, maybe a beer while watching sports here and there. Both of my parents' parents were severe alcoholics though. Thankfully my parents didn't follow their example.

Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
    No.

Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
I'm for the legalization of all substances, as trying to fight it causes more problems than just allowing it, and I don't think the government has the right to say what I can and can't put into my body in the first place. Usage restrictions can be effective though. Don't drink and drive for example.

What is the reason (or are the reasons) for not consuming alcohol (religious, personal, etc.)?
There's nothing more terrifying to me than not being able to trust my own senses. James Randi explains it quite well:

How does it feel when/if you're around people who are consuming alcohol?
I don't mind if people drink, but I haven't really had much exposure to it. I'd be very uncomfortable about someone who's actually drunk though.
What kind of societal pressures have you faced, if any (peer pressure, advertisements, etc.)?
My dad really wanted me to try it for some reason, but I just have zero interest. Ads and peer pressure don't influence me at all.
Has your dedication to the non-consumption of alcohol caused you to be excluded from certain events, gatherings, etc?
Not really. I don't go to things where drinking is the focus of course, but I don't really know anyone else who does either.

Have you ever merely tasted alcohol and made the decision never to do so again?
    Nope, I've never tasted it.

And, if you've never even tasted alcohol, have you been enticed to do so just for the experience?
    No.

At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
First time I drank, I was 21 and was living on my own. I invited my friend Paige to hang out with me, and we went to get alcohol at the local alcohol store and we got Smirknof vodka and then we drank it with some Sprite.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
I don't understand the question. I drink whenever I feel like it and I always act the same. Drinking just eliminates the insecurities and discretion I have. I'm more prone to respond to impulses, and I get word vomit. The same things happen when I'm high, only I feel relaxed instead of energized like I feel when I drink. I'm still myself when I'm drunk and when I'm high. In fact, I'm more myself because those walls are gone.

Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
"Or have you ever been an alocholic?" No it doesn't work like that. Once you're an alcoholic, you're always an alcoholic. It's a physiological, and physical condition.

Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
Haven't been convicted, but I have driven while I was drunk once before and it was so terrifying.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
I kissed my friend's girlfriend because she was being nice to me and making me feel better. It was a small peck, but it was enough for immediate guilt and for her to get upset, so I made it up to her and kissed my friend too to show her that it didn't mean anything.

Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
    No.

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
I drink whenever I feel like it. Last time I drank was when I was in Utah visiting my friend. I drank while I was with her friends meeting them at a bar, and another time when we went to a Mexican restaurant just the two of us and I got a cocktail that was really good.

Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
I've only been hungover once, and it happened the same time I went drinking with my friend and kissed him and his girlfriend.

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
→ Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
I like beer and my favorite beers are Rolling Rock and Shocktop. And I hate the super popular brands like Bud Light.

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
→ Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?

    18

I think 18 is fine as an age, but I wouldn't be opposed to it being lowered to 17 or something. I think educating people about alcohol works better to promote safe drinking than teaching abstinence does.

What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
I live in Ireland lol, there are none. Although there are always those snobby pioneer people around, it's not really a big thing.

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
Everyone in my family drinks except for my sister (she's fifteen), and the majority of my friends drink. I'd say they're all mostly responsible, yeah.

When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
Probably at home or in a pub or something, I dunno really.

    For People Who Drink
At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
My dad used to let me taste his guinness when I was like four.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
If I'm going home soon after drinking I'd probably hold back a little, or if my parents are gonna be up when I get back. Also just whether I feel like it or not.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
    I can't think of any stories, I'm boring :(

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
Tbf I haven't been drinking that long, so not really.

Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
No actually, I've been kinda tired a couple of times but I've never been really hungover.

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
→ Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?

I tend to just drink beer most of the time, never really been big on anything else (though I'm sure that'll change haha). I tasted poitín once and it was ♥♥♥♥ing awful, so I'll say that's my least favourite.

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    18. Reasonable. Doesn't need to be changed.

What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
Drinking is COOL drinking is a sign you're a GROWN UP wow let's get PISSED LADS

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
Yes. Mostly. You get the odd "knob jockey" among the reasonable sorts. The kind that gets paralytic and collapses, dealing £200 worth of damage to a wall. Granted, the wall was made of plaster...

Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
I'm not into DYI discussions with my homies. I don't know a DWI.

When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
In a room where the walls and floor are made of cotton, in the middle of nowhere, with nobody except for a medical team on standby outside said room.

Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
Everybody's got their vice. Let them drink. Better you know what they're putting into their bodies, after all, right?

What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
Might squeeze a little more tax out of it for the lols.

At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
I was 5 and my aunty offered me a sip of wine.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
The ones where people are "knob jockeys" when they drink put me off a bit. But I'm not fussed either way.

Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
    No. No.

Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
I do the odd bit of DIY, have never heard of this DWI, and am not able to pilot a car or bicycle.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
Stolen people's hats? It's about as Extreme as I get.

Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
    No.

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
Consistent since the age of 17. Consistently low, that is. I'm such an upstanding pretentious prat.

Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
A night out in Chester. I overdid it a little, I needed a McDonalds the following morning. Standard.

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
Koppaberg, Rekordlig (something like that), Strawberry and Lime <3333

→ Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
    Everything else is obsolete.

    General Questions
•What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
21 is the legal age of consumption.
•→ Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
Given the fact that people, in general, are equally irresponsible at 21 as they are at 18, there wouldn't really be much harm to lowering the drinking age. If 18 is old enough to smoke cigarettes, and serve -as well as die- in the military, then having a beer should not be a big deal.
•What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
Some people genuinely think you're an alcoholic and will rot in jail forever if they see you getting a drink at the convenience store. My fiancé and I both got griped at by a complete stranger for it. We knew the store clerk and she completely went unhinged for the disrespect that this crazy old bat gave us.
•Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
Yes, and most are responsible. My dad recovered from alcoholism and he is extremely watchful over his consumption now.
•Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
Yes, a few people. It concerns me greatly if it happens more than once. Otherwise, everyone makes mistakes and plenty of people don't think it will happen to them until it actually does. I can let it go, as long as nobody got hurt. As long as the habit changes and a lesson is learned, then fine.
•→ Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?
Not even a little. I have always been aware of the potential consequences of consuming
    alcohol.
•When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
At home, with a small group of the closest friends you have and a responsible means of safety (such as placing all keys into a secure container to prevent drunk driving). Once all of the alcohol is gone, then it's time to sober up, maybe order a pizza if possible. I am usually the one in my group who stays sober. I drink slowly anyway.
•Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
It's better than meth. Plus prohibition failed miserably. People will find a way to get their alcohol, and it's safer to have legal distribution than home-brewed. Yuck.
•What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
Frankly, I think they need to be more firm on repeat offenders. If there is an obvious history of alcohol abuse, then people need to be going to rehab and getting help. I get sick of seeing/hearing about people getting in trouble for the fourth, fifth, sixth time for driving while under the influence. If they aren't learning their lessons, then somebody is going to wind up killed.

    For People Who Drink
•At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
New Year's Eve at home when I was 13. My mother gave me a glass of red wine. She got it from a friend who owned a local vineyard. It was lovely.
•What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
I merely only drink with my fiancé. It could be with friends, at a bar, or home and only the two of us. We drink to get a buzz, and we only do this on the weekends that my daughter is seeing other family, or late at night when she is asleep.
•Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
No. Never. I only drink when I am in a good mood. I try to do more constructive things when I am unhappy. I also lack an addictive personality, which is extremely beneficial.
•Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
Nope. I have only driven while buzzed. Otherwise, I crash wherever I am.
•What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
I like putting things in my pocket while drunk. If it fits, then it's mine.
•Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
I have only been blackout drunk once and that is the worst that it has ever been. It gave me heartburn and a gross hangover. Otherwise, nah, nothing serious.
•Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
It's been pretty much the same. I am not a big drinker and I only plan for these things when I have zero responsibility for the next several hours.
•Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
Only one, giant hangover and that was on my 20th birthday.
I tried eating soup. Horrible idea.
•What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
Anything sweet or fruity works for me. Particularly vodkas. Any brand of Vanilla Vodka will make me your best friend, especially if you brought ice cream, too.
•→ Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
Beer. Plain, old beer. I make the most disgusted face ever when I drink that stuff.

    General Questions
What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
21, and I'm pretty sure it's like that everywhere in the US.

→ Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
I personally don't feel like the age needs to be lowered, but I can see how 18 makes sense as well.

What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
I've never personally observed any alcohol related stigmas, but I know that there obviously are stimgas.

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
My dad has a couple of beers everyday, and my mom often has a glass of wine at supper. I'd say they're responsible drinkers.

Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
→ Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?
    No and no.

When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
Safest people to drink with would be some of my classmates, which I have a little story about that I'll say in one of the other questions. Oh, and probably the staff too.

Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
There's nothing wrong with alcohol being legal to drink. For every person who dies an alcohol related death and for every alcohol related sexual offense, there's a person who drinks responsibly. The better thing to do is not to make alcohol illegal, but make sure people aren't dumbasses when it comes to drinking.

What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
    Law stuff is over my head ;_;

    For People Who Drink
At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
I had a taste of beer, wine, and I think champagne when I was younger, but my first time seriously drinking was about 2 and a half months ago. Yeah, I know, I was a little slow to join the drinking party.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
    ?
Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
    Nah, I'm not an alcoholic.

Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
    Nope.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
I haven't exactly been drinking long enough to do much that would count as stupid or funny. Not to mention I don't act much different when intoxicated; all that really happens is that I loosen up a bit and get kinda off balance. But if you want a funny drinking story from someone else, there's this.

Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
If hangovers count, then yes. If they don't, then no.

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
2 and a half months doesn't really give you an idea of my overall drinking consistency, but I drank a lot more at field camp than I have since I got back from field camp.

Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
^Yes, I have. Only once, and it kinda sucked. I got kinda wasted one night at a bar during field camp (which really only involved me being horribly off balance, puking all over the bar, and then blacking out). When I woke up the next day, I was expecting a massive headache and sensitivity to loud noises, but that wasn't the case. Instead I just felt weak and tired most of the day. Didn't throw up that much either. So it wasn't the worst hangover ever, but its not something that I'd like to experience again if possible.

This is also why I said that my field camp classmates are safe people to drink with. If I was alone when that happened, I'd be screwed. Unfamiliar town+blacked-out drunk+no one to help would= Zekrom, you are in deep, deep ♥♥♥♥.

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
It's kinda early for me to have a favorite brand/type of drink, but there's some stuff I kinda like.

→ Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
Whiskey and IPA. I hate that stuff. I find that beer can be somewhat of an acquired taste, but I really don't think that IPAs are something that I'll ever come to like. Stuff's just too bitter for me.

And for whiskey....I can't handle whiskey. For whatever reason, that's the stuff that gets me intoxicated. And no, its not the alcohol content. First night I went to a bar, I had 2 shots of tequila, a shot of Jagear or whatever it is, some other shot, and a couple of other drinks, didn't feel anything at all. Then comes the whiskey, and I'm suddenly buzzed. On the night I got wasted and blacked out, I had 2 (rather large) shots of whiskey, and you see how that turned out. So the whiskey has not been kind to me. Not to mention it burns and doesn't taste good.

I drink, usually when I'm out with friends or when I'm just relaxing around the house. I've been stressed out lately, and I've found out that having a drink while taking a bath is probably the most relaxing thing ever.

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    21. Like most people here, though, I'm of the opinion that changing it to 18 would be best. Kids in countries with lower drinking ages don't go super crazy in college like US kids do. And as Alex pointed out, if you can go to war, why can't you have a beer?

What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
Hmm. I think they vary really widely. Some people will judge you for drinking, others will judge you for not drinking. Personally, I'm pretty shy and quiet, so people for some reason always assumed I didn't drink? I really don't know where that assumption came from. I guess because I don't really like parties, other college students tended to assume that I had some stance against alcohol.

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
    Yes and yes!

Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
→ Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?

Yes, a few. But it doesn't really change my opinion of alcohol at all. Some people can drink responsibly, some have more trouble. And it doesn't change my opinion of a person, because, just like with any other addiction, it's not really something that someone can just stop once they're in too deep.

When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
Definitely with friends, people you trust. I prefer to have at least one female friend along.

Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
Definitely. Even if alcohol was illegal, people would still drink it (as we've seen). They'd just do it in more dangerous situations, and I don't think the number of deaths would decrease. And I'm of the opinion that if you're going to sexually assault someone, you're already a piece of ♥♥♥♥. Alcohol doesn't change that. I actually saw a study once that, typically, people who get violent when they're drunk are also violent when they're sober. The alcohol may make it a little more likely to come out, but it doesn't really change people's personalities.

What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
Lower the drinking age. Not sure I know enough about the law to make more suggestions, haha.

At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?[\B]
I mean, I've always tried stuff my parents were drinking, but never really liked it much until recently.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
Not too much, I don't think. Sometimes I feel like having a drink and sometimes I don't. I don't really see a pattern.

Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?

    No and no.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
Hmm, I usually just talk a lot. I've only actually been drunk a couple of times. The first time I cried for like six hours, the second time I was just super happy.

Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
    No.

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
I guess that remains to be seen. I'm only 21, so I don't really know what will happen down the line, but I certainly don't think I need to cut back or anything. Even in college I would usually just have a drink or two with my friends, which is basically what I do now.

Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
Ugh, twice. Never again. I felt absolutely miserable the whole next day and couldn't get a thing done.

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
Mostly flavored vodka mixed with orange juice, lemonade, or sprite. I recommend strawberry vodka with lemonade or cherry vodka with sprite. I also love mimosas. I can't stand beer, and I've only very recently gotten to the point where I can handle some wines, but overall I really don't like wine. I actually don't like margaritas much, either.

Is it weird that I've been kind of hoping a thread like this would be made? I wanted to see if anyone had some tasty mixed drink ideas. =)

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    21.
→ Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
I think 21 is a suitable age. There recently was a hoax that went around that the drinking age would be changed to 25, and everyone freaked out about it, so I feel that our government knows a good amount of people are fine with 21 being the age.
What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
Probably that it's considered "cool" to drink underage and that drinking is "cool" in general. I never see why so many people rush to get drunk as soon as they can.
Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?

My dad drink's every now and then at social events and aunt and uncle drink too, but I don't know how often. Saturday I learned an old friend of mine is a big drinker and he had two hard lemonades when we reunited Saturday. He talked often about the beers/alcohol he likes so that implies to me he drinks often like his dad.
Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DIY/DWI, and how did that make you feel? I don't recall if that's ever happened.
→ Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?
When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion? Probably a organized event or club with cops/security around to make a person doesn't get too drunk and almost kill someone. Or at home with a group of friends who you know are responsible to keep you under control.
Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?

I believe moderation is the key. Clearly when you consume too much alcohol, you lose control of your actions, so don't drink like 6 bottles a night. If a person is responsible enough to know when to stop, and when to call a cab home or have a designated driver, then they should be fine.
What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
Nothing really. The laws seem fine to me. Besides, politics scare me so no thanks.

    For People Who Drink
At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
Excluding the wine at church when I was 8 (which doesn't count imo since it's only a sip and everyone drinks it too) , it was on my 21st birthday when I had a beer and spat it out right away after a few sips. I now only drink occasionally for special events.
What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
New Years Eve, parties, parish picnics, special events only. Or, if someone offers the remainder of their drink, I'll likely take it, but not always. Saturday, my friend, Jacob, had two Mike's Hard Lemonades and he give em the rest of the first one.

Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
Since I only drink on certain occasions, I have let to get convicted of DIY/DWI and don't ever plan too.
What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence? Nothing yet, cause I have yet to get drunk.
Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
Nope cause I've only had a few alcoholic drinks.
Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
It's pretty much consistent and I've still barely drank since I turned 21.
Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
    Nope.
What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?

Hard lemonade, a beer, and champagne are the only things I've had with alcohal in them so I can't decide, but I really liked Mike' Hard Lemonade when Jacob give me his (first time trying it). My dad thinks I'll prefer sweet stuff which has so far been proven right.
→ Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
Most beer brands such as Budweiser.

What is the reason (or are the reasons) for not consuming alcohol (religious, personal, etc.)? Well, I just don't like it. The thing is, both my parents are also non-alchoholics after going to one of those AA meetings before I was born. I also just don't like the taste of it or how it looks either. I can't really explain why I don't like without it coming off as odd. D:
How does it feel when/if you're around people who are consuming alcohol? I don't really care since I'm not around anyone that does drink. As I mentioned above, both my parents are non-alcoholics.
What kind of societal pressures have you faced, if any (peer pressure, advertisements, etc.)? I actually haven't been faced with any of that.
Has your dedication to the non-consumption of alcohol caused you to be excluded from certain events, gatherings, etc? No because I don't really care much for parties or social gatherings where it's included. I never go to those things because well... that's personal.
Have you ever merely tasted alcohol and made the decision never to do so again? I did a little bit, it was a strawberry daiquiri, and I really didn't like it. I don't like the idea of drinking because the fact of getting drunk scares me because I don't what kind of person I will be while I'm drunk. :/
→ And, if you've never even tasted alcohol, have you been enticed to do so just for the experience?

    General Questions

    • What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?

      18
    • → Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?

There's a lot a debate about it and considering the level of alcohol fuelled violence in young people it may need to be increased.
    • What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?

I don't think there are any in Australian culture to be honest.
    • Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?

Most people I know drink and are responsible.
    • Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DUI/DWI, and how did that make you feel?

No I don't associate with awful people. ;-)
    • When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?

I drink in my house or the house of friends or relatives. Otherwise in restaurants. I don't like bars.
    • Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?

Selfishly, yes. You can't take my wine from me!

    For People Who Drink

    • At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?

My parents let me taste rum at Christmases when younger (delicious) but the first time I count was 14 at a party. Cask wine and lolly vodka...
    • What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?

I drink regularly so I don't need special circumstances.
    • Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?

No. Despite regular drinking I still often go without without any alcohol for weeks.
    • Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?

Never. If I'm the designated driver I usually have one glass of wine for an entire night and that's it.
    • What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?

I can't remember! I don't usually get drunk when I drink. I think I usually just start dancing (badly) and rant nonsensical things at people and think everything is exciting and amazing.
    • Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?

      No.
    • Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?

I drink more now than when younger. I can afford to go to wineries and buy good wine. When younger I was more likely to drink mixed spirits because it was cheaper (self mixing of course) but except for white rum I don't actually like th he flavour so it seems pointless.
    • Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?

Just a bad headache for a morning. Nothing exceptional.
    • What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?

Red wine. Shiraz, merlot and pinot noir. I love Yarra Valley wines, but plan to visit Rutherglen and sample the wines of that region. Red wine goes so well with salami and cheese, which are other things I love.

      I also love plum wine.
    • → Likewise, which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?

      Wine white is gross. :-P

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    18 in Australia

Do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
    Lowered if anything

What are the social stigmas related to alcohol that you've personally observed?
It ranges from general friendliness to extreme hostility. It really depends on who is drinking andwhat they are drinking.

Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
Responsible in the sense that they don't destroy anything? I know more than a few people on both sides.

Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DUI/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
Dad had to catch the bus to work for 3 months when his license was suspended for drinking and driving. I laughed, it was his own fault really. He has since learned.

Likewise, did this change your perception of alcohol or people who consume alcohol?
Not really, I mean the law is the law, break them and you suffer the consequences. He was just unlucky that day to be caught.

When, where and with whom would be the safest place to partake in alcohol consumption, in your opinion?
Home, obviously is the safest. Not usually the most fun, I feel the real question should be where is the least safest place to drink.

Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
In all honesty, I think all drugs should be legal. But obviously because of their dangers they mustn't be advertised in a positive light. The thing is though you have the choice whether or not to drink, and as drunk as you are you still maintain your absolute base level morals, so if you think it's okay to rape when you're drunk you're probably just suppressing that when sober.

What about alcohol-related laws would you change, and why?
Drinking age should be 16. You must be .00 to drive or operate machinery instead of .05.

At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
I had a taste of dads beer as a young child. My first time actually drinking with friends I was 12 and I had like 3 Vodka Cruisers and we all thought we were hammered haha.

What incidents, circumstances and situations influence your drinking?
Pretty much what my plans are that night, the next morning, and who I'm with at the time.

Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
I guess I would. I mean I'm technically an exclusive binge-drinker; I drink to get drunk. Usually it doesn't interfere with the rest of my life but at the same time.

Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
    Nope.

What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
Haha. I don't even know, I don't remember my 18th at all like I remember cracking my first can and then shots and then waking up the next day feeling relatively okay hah.

Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
I was hospitalised after 2 UDLs but that was because I'm actually allergic to the raspberry flavouring rofl. Other than losing my stomach or waking up with incapacitating hangovers I guess not.

Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
I definitely noticed a steep drop off in the need for me to drink as soon as I was legal. And since then I think I've kept a pretty consistent once or twice a fortnight.

Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
Few mates and I went camping and naturally you bring all the booze you can fit in the car. They kept spiking my drinks with tequila knowing full well I can't do tequila. I couldn't move the next day it was dreadful.

What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
I'm into rum a lot. But usually I'll drink 5 Seeds cider because it's cheap and I don't usually have negative repercussions in the morning.

Which brands and types are horribly cruddy to you?
I can't drink whiskey, scotch or bourbon. Tequila I can manage but it's a bad idea in the morning. Also I find really sugary drinks suck after a while.

What is the legal age in your province / state / country that you can begin to consume alcohol?
    21.
Likewise, do you feel that this age bracket needs to be modified in any way?
Nope, it's good where it's at.
Do you know anyone in your family or circle of friends who drink, and if so, are they responsible?
Yeah, most of my family and friends drink, and most of them are responsible. They know their limits.
Have you known anyone who has ever been charged with a DUI/DWI, and how did that make you feel?
    Nope.
Do you feel that alcohol being legal to drink is a good idea, given the number of deaths and related sexual offences often blamed on its consumption?
Nope, but it's around and clearly not going anywhere. Might as well enjoy it.

At what age, where and with whom was your first time consuming alcohol?
When I was 15 me and my friend Chris stole some beers from my parents. I drank about half the can and puked from the taste lol.
Would you classify yourself as an alcoholic, or have you ever been an alcoholic?
Nope. I really only drink at social events and sometimes I'll feel like just drinking a beer after a hard day.
Have you ever been convicted of a DIY/DWI, or have you ever driven while under the influence (incl. bicycling)?
I've never been convicted but I drove a boat after a few beers before.
What is the stupidest, funniest thing you've ever done under the influence?
Probably not the stupidest thing, but it's the only thing that's at the top of my head. But apparently during a black out I built a fort on my bed out of pretty much everything in my room, including the 40 inch tv.
Have you ever drank so excessively that it's actually afflicted your health short-term?
    Nope.
Has your alcohol consumption been consistent or has it curbed with age, education, etc?
A little bit, but not too steep.
Have you ever had a hangover? And if so, what has been your worst hangover experience?
I've had a few, but they weren't really anything to complain about.
What is your favourite type of alcohol, and what brand do you most often consume?
Bud light is my favorite beer, I'm not picky about anything else.

What is the reason (or are the reasons) for not consuming alcohol (religious, personal, etc.)?
It's more to religious than to personal though. I actually want to know how does it feel to be tipsy after drinking alcohol, but eh. Whatever. x'D

Have you ever merely tasted alcohol and made the decision never to do so again?
    Nope, never tasted alcohol before.

→ And, if you've never even tasted alcohol, have you been enticed to do so just for the experience?
Considering the lack of alcoholic drinks here... even if I want to try it out (for the experience), I can't. :'D

My knowledge in alcohol is so minimum. Then again, I've never seen anyone drinking alcohol here... yet...

Okay way too many questions so I'm just going to talk because it's much easier and less cookie-cutter.

I drink, as anyone who talks to me on IRC would know. I started at around 19 I think. I think 19 is a better age to lower it to than 18 - in New Jersey, where my family is from, the age to buy cigarettes is 19 even though smoking age is 18 because they don't want high schoolers buying cigarettes for minors. It's the same with alcohol for me. Although there are relatively easy ways around the age being 19 for high schoolers, no reason to make it super easy, you know?

I get really bothered when I'm on sites like this, that focus on nerdy things, because just like I mentioned in the thread in VG about what you hate about gamers, this is another instance I've noticed of "normal culture" being shunned by nerds and people who participate in it being mocked. I like being a little drunk; it relaxes me and I get disproportionately happy and it reduces some of my social anxieties. It's ruined when I mention it and get some chucklehead saying something like "you're killing your brain cells by drinking" because they're 14 and think that they're never going to ever drink because they're so much smarter than everyone else. No one ever pressured me into drinking, even when everyone around me was, but this culture has certainly tried to pressure me out of drinking for no good reason.

I've never gotten that stupid drunk but my boyfriend's place used to be right next to a grocery store and we would get drunk and then walk there. Then a year later someone was shot on that exact same route, going from the same apartment complex to the same grocery store. But I would have done that sober, so...

Edit: oh, my worst hangover experience was when my blood sugar plummeted while I was drinking/sleeping and I didn't realize so I puked 6 times in the morning before someone suggested it as an issue. I was upstairs and all the food was downstairs so I crawled downstairs and got some fruit cocktail and almost immediately started feeling better.
