Much like films and music albums there are indeed anime series which women will never be able to fully understand. I'm not saying that women can't enjoy these series but when they do it's simply on a different level.

    Initial D
    Fist of the North Star
    City Hunter
    Captain Harlock
    One Piece
    Revolutionary Girl Utena
    Steins;Gate
    Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
    Samurai Flamenco
    Girls und Panzer
    The entire mecha genre
Pretty much the entire idol genre

This is just the start to the list, I hope you'll add some more as this could be a handy resource in the future.

I know I'll regret this, but...do share your reasoning for those.

Especially Utena. That one sticks out a tad.

I suppose Utena is the odd one out there, I'll explain it.

Kunihiko Ikuhara is the anime director equivalent of those young men that get to university and suddenly realise that they're totally into feminism because well, there are lots of women in these gender studies classes. Utena is essentially a bunch of things men like (duels, grand architecture, motor racing, women with long legs) and a few things to trick women into thinking it's ''a clever and mature depiction of feminine journey on search for confidence and inner strength''. Quoting one of the more recent youtube comments btw.. If you watch his later work it's even clearer that he's just in it for one reason.

So yes, it's not MANime but it's certainly one women tend not to get.

Wow there are 24 guests viewing this thread I don't think I've ever seen so many

Hmm...that's an interesting take on Utena. I don't necessarily disagree with the interpretation, but I think its a bit of a generalisation. Although I'm not sure that anyone really gets Ikuhara's works, given how ridiculously obscure and just plain random the man can be sometimes.

But interpretation of anything is surely a matter of individual perspective and not biological gender, which has zero bearing on an individual's identity unless they wish it to? When you say "women" do you mean in a strictly biological sense, or someone with a female gender identity? What about people with a gender identity opposite to their biological gender, or without a gender identity at all? Will they ever "truly comprehend" these shows in your opinion?

I actually think it's kind of an interesting thing to say, I guess. I've never really looked at things like this in terms of gender because I don't have a gender identity.

I ship Zoro and Robin, so I guess I should consider that a compliment. xD

I'm not much of a shipper but Oda said there won't be romance between crewmembers, So no Zoro x Robin. I dunno but i think its going to be Zoro x Perona..

There are clearly men that don't have the spirit of men so I suppose there it's possible that some women do in fact.

Dude, this is the pokecommunity anime board, not /a/. I'm sure they'd appreciate this complete drivel much more over there.
Also FMA was made by a woman so fucking lol

I've never seen this sort of post on /a/, certainly have have /tv/ though. Get it right.

Also this is the Pokecommunity anime board and I'm literally one of the 4 people that posts on it. I'll post how I want.

So you're talking about the "traditional" (I'll use that word loosely because I can't think of what else to call it right now) male stereotypical way of thinking/processing these things, then? Or that target demographic, anyway. I think it's a bit outdated myself, but there is no denying that these stereotypes are still very prominent in media and society in general, so it's not entirely irrelevant.

I think I can see your point to an extent, if I don't look too deeply into how you worded the topic. There are definitely just some things that certain mindsets are more drawn to/grasp faster than others, I would agree, and this can apply to anime. I don't think its necessarily down to being male/female, but you could generalise/simplify it that way if you wanted to, since some anime is clearly marketed at a male/female demographic in that sense, and I think a lot of people can be influenced by that labelling.

Although I would also say there is no one way to enjoy a show, and that just because something is not interpreted in the way the creator may have intended does not mean it has been misinterpreted. Maybe it's not a question of comprehension, but interpretation, if you don't fit the target demographic?

I'm probably making this more complex than I should - since I seem to be the only one who isn't outright disagreeing at this point - but I'm genuinely curious about how this stuff works and why you or anyone else might think that way. Don't mind me. xD

dude, Steins;Gate is one of the best things I've seen ever. Also thoroughly enjoying FMA Brotherhood atm; it's not about brotherhood, it's about loads of things. Your reasoning does not convince me haha.

Anime that a girl wound't understand... hmm... Harem self-insert garbage we get each season maybe? I'm a guy and I find it hard to follow those crappy shows.

This is a hard question to answer since Nerd culture isn't really a boy's club anymore. More women are getting exposed to nerdy stuff like anime and japanese hobby games, and some of them love the stuff.

Mech shows (Gundam mostly) are riddled with melodrama, with pretty boys piloting mechs... intertwined with gripping political conflict that can easily immerse you in the world. It won't be hard to find a girl/woman who'd want to watch it (Unless they don't really fancy anime).

It's hard not to find a show that a girl won't understand/comprehend, since taste is a thing...
