Battling with Legendary Pokemon

Do you ever use legendary Pokemon you've caught in battle or do you immediately box them?

As a kid, I used to... I used Azelf and Uxie to beat the elite four in my first ever playthrough of Diamond and Rayquaza in my first ever playthrough of Emerald. Nowadays, though? No. Apart from the gen 5 main legendaries in the last story battle of Unova, I don't.

I do occasionally use a Phione, a mythical, though.

Some legendary Pokemon I really like (Lugia, Kyogre) but they come so late that it would require removing a pokemon from my team just for the last stretch of the game.

For that reason, no I typically don't use them. Nothing against them however.

In Emerald, as a small child I was never able to beat the Hoenn elite four with my party. Drake was like the bane of my existence. Every time I would get stuck at him and go catch Rayquaza, then come back and obliterate the entire thing.

Some of the legendary Pokemon I catch I use them in battle and others I box.

I always try to avoid using legendary Pokemon on my playthrough teams because it usually feels cheap and it goes against my headcanon when it comes to legendaries. I always believed that in Pokemon universe legendaries are like deities and they are too powerful and too important for the nature's balance to ever be caught by any trainer and it doesn't feel right for them to be trained and used in battles like other ordinary Pokemon. So because of this reasoning I barely ever used legendaries on my playthrough teams, to be exact I only used 3 legendaries in 3 out of my 30+ different playthroughs I did over the years of being a Pokemon fan.

The first one I used was Tornadus in my first Black playthrough because by the time it started roaming I still only had 5 Pokemon on my team and the end of the game was very close so I wanted a full team before I go through Victory Road and challenge the E4. So after catching the Tornadus, I added it to the team because it was already at high level and I still didn't have a flying type on my team by that point. However I only used it for that last part of the game and as soon as I defeated N and Ghetsis, I decided to put Tornadus in the PC Box and I never used it again because I caught a Sawk in the post-game soon after and I used him as my 6th Pokemon instead during the E4 rematches.

The second one was Type:Null/Silvally in my first Ultra Sun playthrough but I only used him during the post-game (for Rainbow Rocket battles) because that's when you first get him and I didn't even know at the time that Silvally was considered to be a legendary Pokemon.

The third one is Suicune in my VC Crystal playthrough that I'm doing right now and the reason I decided to use Suicune is because I have an Unown on my team and since Unown shows up alongside Suicune during the opening animation and title screen of Pokemon Crystal it was only fitting to have Suicune alongside Unown on my team in this playthrough. Also my Crystal team is very unconventional and full of "weaker" Pokemon like Unown, Meganium and Farfetch'd so I felt like adding Suicune to this team wouldn't be an overkill in this situation.

So as you can see I usually don't use legendaries but on rare occasions when it makes sense to me then I will use a legendary Pokemon on my team even though I'm not a huge fan of legendaries in general.

I do use Legendaries myself sometimes.

I used the Legendary Birds the first time I played VC Blue, as my team was quite underlevelled. Articuno was the MVP, given how good it's icy prowess was.

I'm with the majority that used to use them as a kid! When I was younger I used to love using legendary Pokemon in battle and having a super OP 'mon who could sweep trainers and E4 - for some reason I used to love training them to level 100 too haha. It's been a while since I've used them ingame though, I tend to prefer having a full team of regular Pokemon to battle with and change it up everytime :)

i still use legendaries in-game tbh.

i've come to a realisation recently that i kind of detest boxing them and never using them again. it feels... less fun that way. some people might be satisfied with them being trophies and whatnot, but i actually would like using some of them in battle at some point, and i do. using mythicals/legendaries is arguably just as fun if not moreso than regular pokemon.
