I've never heard it called "breaking up" before. I guess it's a UK thing? o.o

Yeah, that's what we call leaving at the end of term here. Not sure if it's used everywhere, but in England, yes.

I don't know how the term came about..

In the US, we "break up" with a girlfriend or boyfriend. I've never heard it used another way. o_O
When we go on break, I usually say "my last day was today" or "we're on break today", ect. I usually don't use the word break as a verb. o_O

I'm on Winter Break starting today. 8D ...but now I have too much work to do. T_T</3
 
I think Sammi meant she doesn't use break as a verb in that context. You have to have rocks for brains to not know break is a verb. XD

Here we call the holidays "break" and ALSO use it in the context of girlfriend/boyfriends, as Sammi described. And, yeah, good point Kevin XD;
