There are at least two things I hate about most anime and Japanese games I've seen. One of them is that they just HAVE to have the characters say the name of their attack as they use it. Would you ever do that? Think about it for a moment. I can understand in mild situations where you might be playing/sparing with a friend or something and you wanted to introduce a new move, but even then, I would never think to say the name more than once or twice. In more serious situations like saving the world from an overlord, that stupid cliche really kills the mood in my opinion. No one wants to know the name of your flashy move, just kill the enemy and leave it at that! How many terrorists or police agents on the news or something pull out a gun then say "MACHINE GUN RAMPAGE!!!" before opening fire? It's... unrealistic, and I would REALLY appreciate if Japan saw how unrealistic scenes like that are. If you disagree, be my guest. I'm just ranting here.

Edit 1: I'm sorry for the presumptuous claim I made that Japan couldn't tell how unrealistic they are. I take it back, but my feelings on the matter don't change.
Edit 2: When I said I didn't like the lack of realistic content, I meant that purely in terms of personality, so please don't think of me as a hypocrite by comparing something about the physics and whatnot.

Falcon Punch is the name of a move of a character uses, who races in futuristic cars in a place they could easily die on tracks that defy gravity, and this character also participates in arena battle with a plumber who fights turtles and a elf boy with a magic sword, among many others others.

Which part of that makes you think they're worried about being realistic?

They do it because it's cool!

However let's for a second assume that perhaps the reason anime exists is to not be realistic. There's a reason only one genre is called slice of life. Also concerning your comments about the names of the attacks that's a rather western/eurocentric view of how their media works. Remember young Japanese have grown up with shows like Dragon Ball which has turned that into a trope of culture. The response in Japan would probably be "Why wouldn't you give your attack a cool name?" Additionally sometimes the name can act as a sort of "spell" in some series where it can help cast. That's also why you hear lines we think are really cheesy in the west, it's because in Japan they're not nearly as cheesy and more sincere. Also let's not forget we do this with narration in our media. Is it realistic from a first person point of view to hear someone narrating exactly what they're doing in the moment? Probably not likely.

I don't typically mind fan-made physics, nor do so many other fans, but when it comes to a personality, it's considered a golden rule to keep it relatable.

Then it's not really a case of Japan "not seeing" how unrealistic it is, it's a case of you're probably watching the wrong genre if it annoys you that much. They are well aware of how unrealistic it is, and that's what makes it fun and entertaining.

If other like it, good for them. I'm just giving a personal opinion here about how I feel about it and applying the usual standards of writing that include a realistic personality as a guideline I like to see. Also, sorry about the misconception that Japan couldn't see the unrealistic status of their programs. I edited the OP.

    *in the west

You're thinking of anime from a western point of view. It is created by a culture far different from ours. In Japan it is perfectly fine to not be relatable (or sometimes even more relatable than in the west). In fact Japan really likes the effortless genius trope a lot, something you don't see in the west for instance. It all comes down to culture, tropes, and what they find acceptable vs what we find acceptable.

So what if they do shout the names of there attacks? It's Anime and Manga... most of the things in anime and manga aren't even realistic to begin with.

Because a soccer anime with super powers and penguins in them is totally realistic even before they say the name of their attack.

"I would REALLY appreciate if Japan saw how unrealistic scenes like that are"

I'm pretty sure they do realise that these scenes are unrealistic which is why they make anime like these. Just because most things are realistic in the west, does not mean it's going to be the same in the east.

EDIT: everyone else above have pretty much taken the words out of my mouth - thanks guys </3

I made the edit in the OP. Thanks to everyone who pointed that out!

Yeah, I respect their opinions. I was speaking from a personal point of view, and no offense was intended.

If this is how you feel then I suggest you avoid a certain show called Kill La Kill like the plague. Not only do they announce the names of their attacks, but they also still frame them and write them in big red letters.

(worth noting is that this is one of my favorite anime and I love when they do this <3)
    Spoiler:

But yea, a lack of realism, as it were, isn't unique or specific to Japanese media. There's plenty of American shows where there's no realism in the characters' behavior at all. In fact, just name any character from any show that you like, and I can guarantee there's something in their personality that isn't realistic (think Family Guy--8 year old talking dog with a 14 year old son, need we say more?)

On the other hand, I'd urge you (if you're interested, of course!) to check out a few of these anime, which are quite realistic and in fact the relatability of the characters is what makes them so enjoyable.

    • Welcome to the NHK
    • Monster
    • Uchuu Kyoudai
    • Rec
    • Shirobako
    • Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi (currently airing)
Just to name a few. Give some of them a try, you might actually come away with a whole new outlook on Japanese media :)

Thanks for the suggestions. BTW, I don't like Family guy (even if I did, it's a silly comedy with little to no tense moments, so I'm more passive about the lack of realism), and I didn't mean to say that Japan is the only provider of unrealistic characters, but it IS the only one I'm aware of that has made such a big cliche out of saying the name of their attacks as they are used. Lastly, I know that not ALL anime and Japanese games do that. As stated in the OP, I said "most" according to my personal experiences up to that point. Again, thanks for the suggestions and not to mention feedback in general.
