Don't think it was ever specified if every character needs to stay alive in order to beat the game. But I could also see Jake's hope powers come into play in that regard, especially since the real final battle still hasn't begun.

Well when that whole claymation thing was going on it was stated that dirk was there along with the others since he's the one who put the soul into lil cal. If dirk were to die now it would cause an offshoot timeline where everything would be screwed and all their actions including this update would have been pointless. The same thing applies to if arquiusprite or Gamzee were to die.
