Ever played a game that made you laugh out loud? Have a good chuckle? Grin from ear to ear?

Writing in video games have really improved in the last couple of years. We've moved beyond the comic mischief, sight gags, and slapstick comedy of yesteryear (I'm looking at you Banjo-Kazooie series), and actually have well-written jokes.

And not only well-written, but well-delivered.

In the past, maybe, year-and-a-half, three games come to mind that tickled my funny bone (not all released in that time span, but happen to play them all then).

    Ghostbusters: The Video Game
First off, this along with Batman: Arkham Asylum and Wii's GoldenEye 007 show that licensed games can work and work really well when the original source material is respected and part of the original development/production team is brought in to work on the game. And, that's the reason for the game's success in the humour category.

Written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (who wrote the films and portrayed Ray Stanz and Egon Spengler respectively), the film is effectively "Ghostbusters III". The script is authentic to the characters and very funny (but subtle. Like the films, it isn't "laugh out loud". Just...humorous). There's an almost non-stop stream of original dialogue and witty banter being exchanged between the Ghostbusters, who comment on almost everything, as you play. All voiced by the original cast too. It makes for a better sequel to the original film than Ghostbusters II did. XD

    Tales of Monkey Island
Unlike Ghostbusters, this is a lot more "Hey, these are the jokes people. Come on, laugh". There's a lot of humour here and lot of reliance on puns. But, from, among other things, the neither-man-or-woman-merfolk, to trying to court a giant manatee, to the sadistic Marquis de Singe, the game's quality zaniness still had me laughing.

    Portal 2
I'm not yet finished this. On the second-last chapter, but still really enjoying and finding it funnier than the first one. GLaDOS is as wonderfully insulting and sarcastic as ever, but with a little bit of a new edge to her. I lol'ed GLaDOS fangirling over Cave Johnson and "Burn it down! ... Burning people! He says what we're all thinking!"

    lol

IMO, the Ace Attorney series is pretty funny since all the character at some point say funny things. In short, the whole series has pretty well-done writing, being serious when needed, and light and happy if the situation calls for it. And the cast's just a whole slew of quirky characters. >:3 I always laughed out loud at the reactions and puns that were in the game.

I found John Marston from Red Dead Redemption hilarious and Nate Drake from both Uncharted games is a riot.

The whole cast of Disgaea is hilarious, especially Flonne.

When you start a NG+, the Prinny comments make the game even funnier

Mother 3 had a lot of moments that made me crack up. Tales of the Abyss is a pretty funny game too. :] Yoshi's Story as well, because there's some interesting songs you can add fun lyrics too! :D

Games that've made me laugh out loud recently?
    • Portal 2 - I was replaying large portions of it today and was STILL laughing. :D Pretty much all of Wheatley's lines make me grin. The original is a classic too.
    • Left 4 Dead - both of them, but especially 1 because I'm more attached to the characters
    • any of the Ace Attorney games - the localization with these is brilliant
    • Ghost Trick - see above except there's only the one game. :< I hope there are more one day
    • Ben There, Dan That - I didn't expect to like this as much as I did but it was a great game. It's free, so no excuse to not play it!
    • Plants vs Zombies - There are some amazing puns in this. :P There's not much plot but what writing there IS always makes me laugh
    • Penny Arcade Adventures - I guess if you enjoy the comic, you enjoy this. And enjoy it I did. XD There are a lot of things that really amused me about this.

Tales, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy games make me laugh too, but that's definitely moreso over attachments to the characters and plots than good writing. :P Well, Tales games have hilarious plots but generally they're supposed to be more srs than comedic.

Oh, and Trauma Centre games make me laugh but that's because of the ridiculous plots and how over-serious they are. Which is on purpose, I'm sure, but frustrating at times too. ("LET'S OPERATE ON THIS DOG THAT GOT SHOT BY REBELS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COAL MINES WE PROFESSIONAL SURGEONS WERE EXPLORING FOR A VAGUELY DISCERNABLE REASON------NOOOOO THE DOG HAS TO BE RUSHED TO THE VET TO BE SAVED; I AM QUITTING THE MEDICAL PROFESSION FOREVERRRR")

I like Wheatley too. I think Stephen Merchant ad libed a lot. Which always good. He made me grin. But, the Cave Johnson stuff made me laugh more often. Mantis men!

He probably did. If you play with captions/subtitles on, Wheatley's lines especially have added words, the pauses are in different places, and so on. I assume the captions are just the original script so... he took some great liberties with the individual lines.

The first Portal made me laugh a lot more than the second. I don't know why. The second was funny but I think I preferred the first.
Others are Mortal Kombat, for the randomly added bits from the original like 'TOASTIEEE'. Cracks me up every time.

House of the Dead: Overkill. It's supposed to made like one of those old cheesy horror films that has bad acting. And also the way Isaac Washington drops f-bombs every 3 minutes is just hilarious.

Dragon Quest is the only series that comes to mind. It's just absolutely charming as a whole.

And even the slime puns are hilarious; I'm terrible I know.

No More Heroes is full of incredible comic moments. The entire plot is one giant absurdity, the characters are generally insane, and the protagonist (Travis Touchdown) is so shamelessly a pervert and a loser that he really ties the whole thing together. It's definitely not for children, though.

Also anything localized by Working Designs. Although it's difficult and expensive to do, I definitely recommend tracking down copies of the Lunar games and Alundra. Don't even try for the Saturn titles unless you're loaded.

Ace Attorney games never fail to make me smile... Or laugh out loud XD

Disgaea was also funny... I haven't really played it much, but I watched my brother and it was funny. Not only the characters, but the story itself seemed wacky (at first though).

There are too many games to list.

Evolution: The World of Sacred Device - After completing the first dungeon you can choose, put Chain in your party, then talk to the lady in front of The Society. lolz.

Luminous Arc - ...Pretty much every cutscene I've seen.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3 - Okay, I'm cheating a bit by saying a Flash game, but I laugh whenever I recognize a reference.

Shooter RPG: Starwish - Another Flash game, but some of the dialogue is bloody brilliant.

The World Ends With You - Beat. That is all.

I find some parts of the Fable for Xbox and Xbox 360 funny. Such as, the Gnome quest and the parts with Reaver and Ben Finn ;D

Ben Finn: "All we need is a crazy, old man who loves blowing stuff up" *huge bang and a old man walks through the blown up wall*

    That made me LMAO.
