I can't remember the last time I actually fell victim to a known scam, but I almost got roped by a friend of mine that I graduated high school with into the multi-level-marketing scheme of selling MonaVie, a acai-based juice purported to have health benefits (hint, hint: it actually had none).
Around July 2009, I was invited to a "business meeting" by my aforementioned friend in a community quite aways from home, and when I showed up to the event, she kind of talked me out of it (surprisingly), but gave me some information about MonaVie and how the marketing structure worked (the "compensation plan", which I could NOT figure out at all, even though I'm generally intelligent enough to figure out a lot of other things. Should have been a major red flag). She then instead invited me to a demonstration of the juice at a location closer to home. When I got there on the scheduled time, the place was closed, so I went straight home (I actually had to work later in the day, so it was probably a good thing I didn't see anybody there at that time), and emailed her about this issue, so she then decided to have it at my house. (!)
On the day the home demonstration was to take place, my mom warned that she was not going to be buying anything. When the demonstration started, my friend brought another woman who she claimed was her 'mentor' (which really ticked both my mom and I off).
After the two left, my mom lectured me about not falling for sales schemes including those that my friends may be involved in. I ended up having to write a email to my friend scolding her for what she did.
I remained friends with her for only a little while longer, then she got married and moved away, and I eventually deleted my MySpace and Facebook accounts (I had her on my friends list on both platforms), so it was probably for the best that I phased out all communication with her (considering I actually had a crush on her towards the end of high school and the period of time afterwards including when the incidents discussed in this post occurred).
