Hello, [Insert Name Here]

Do you tend to rename characters when prompted, or go with their default names? With original characters (ie. via character creation), how do you choose your player name?

In games where you have to choose a unique IGN as a part of an online community, do you have a usual go-to handle, or do you create random names on a whim depending on the game?

characters with canon names, i typically just go with what's canon, like in mother 3 and chrono trigger. especially when they have set personalities. something where your character is more molded to your tastes like in pokemon or animal crossing though, i just name them whatever name i'm feeling at the moment, usually al, alli, or allison. i'm really creative, as you can see.

I usually rename any character that prompts it to "Pala", since that's my in game name that I've been using for awhile. Back in the day I used all these weeby ass names (whatever Japanese name that popped into my head) or a stupid made up name that a teenage me thought was cool. Although, I haven't played a new video game in a long time that prompts me to rename the main character...

I'm afraid I'm never very original when it comes to naming my characters - I use the same few variations over and over again. Solez is quite typical, or my real name, Eoin, but seemingly I'm not inventive or fun enough to experiment with joke names! I usually don't go with the canon/suggested names, though.

Depends on the game! In something like the Legend of Zelda, it feels wrong to not use Link (for those games that let you rename him). However, when it's something a bit more personal and avatar-based, like Pokemon or Fire Emblem, using my first name as the character's name seems to feel best. When it's mostly online games though, like Monster Hunter, I tend to just use Firebolt. For those online games that let you pick gender and stuff as well, if I make a female alt I'd usually use Caeltia instead (means something in Elvish if I remember right, based on the first female character I made and have just used it as a default ever since). Can confirm that using a female character makes finding hunts in Monster Hunter much easier. I wonder why... 🙄

I tend to have a go-to handle these days for communities (not for PC though! ehhe) but I'm often quite boring and stick to standard names really ahah. I guess when a character is pre-designed, I don't really feel like I'm roleplaying so much? Like, in the Mass Effect games, I really like that the MC is called Shepard because then it feels like I'm playing a solid character and not some random self-made hero like in many more freestyle RPGs.

I fondly remember the adventures of Gohan, Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Trunks in Chrono Trigger my first time through.

It...was something I used to do back when I was a kiddo, and I think a lot of that came from the fact that back when I was a kid playing FFVII with my brother, we'd rename the characters. These days if they have set names I usually don't with the exception of games where the main character doesn't really have much of a canon name or is a self-insert (the Persona games are a great example of both of these, especially at release when the MC has no name).
