How much story?

I like a good campaign, it makes me want to play more because I want to know what happens next. BW had a very nice story, and I feel that other Pokemon games should have a similarly deep story too but a different plot and setting, obviously, so they remain interesting. As long as the story isn't too adultish for kids and too kiddish for adults, it would be good to have stories like that. Also, as long as it remains a Pokemon game, meaning don't go too in-depth with the story and make sure the focus is still on Pokemon, because franchises have died like that. I know there a quite a few people that want the game to end so they can do comptetitive battling and stuff, but the majority of people who play the game play it because they like, or love, Pokemon. And I think a fairly deep campaign appeals to that demographic.

Fortunately the main series doesn't belong into the jRPG category (unlike the Final Fantasy and Tales of series). The plot (I don't like to call it story, because that would be only 50% of the truth) doesn't have to be complicated and should mostly give the player some directions where to go, as long as it makes sense in the Pokemon universe. Of course every bit of the plot that gets build into the game should be as good as it can be, or else it destroys all the immersion. I'm still not a fan of these fourth wall breaking tutorials, but at least they aren't as annoying as in BW2 in the newer games.

I can live with a plot that just makes sense and for everything else I'll just include my own ideas to get my own unique experience of the games.

^ Well they weren't much better at all. XY was almost as jarring with tutorials and plot direction as B2W2 was, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire has points that automatically teleport you to your destination. After that, I will never shit-talk Generation V for its tutorials ever again. Now i'm not saying that I don't want to admit that B2W2 were bad with this, but what I don't want people to say is that B2W2 are the only games in the series that are that bad with it, because they aren't.

But that aside, considering this is a franchise made for children, I don't expect the series to go in any serious directions with story lines anytime soon. They've followed the same generic formula for a while (except with BW with N and Ghetsis), but they might do something like what they did with BW at some point in the future.

nah im good without a ton of story. I hated b/w. One of the biggest annoyances was I felt like every time I got to the next town/city I was bombarded with story down my throat when all I wanted to do was play. I felt like every time I got on a new route I would encounter one of my rivals and after awhile it just all became annoying text.

I thought Ghetsis was an interesting member of team plasma, but otherwise it was a really weird team I didn't enjoy.

Overall I wouldn't mind more story in the games as long as it's GOOD story. Something about b/w was just so boring. The characters were just so annoying.

Honestly, story should prevail and this is why.
When the story is detailed and complex, adventurers will have a lot of fun playing it, but also will competitive players, sure it will take you some time, but it wont be boring, even if you are playing it solely to get to the competitive part.
When the story sucks, competitive players will still have to go through it to get the competitive part of the game, whereas adventurers will hate it. Not only are they not into competitive gaming, but they also cant enjoy the story part, so the game will be completely ruined for them.

I myself am currently playing the older generations so Im still not into competitive gaming, but I do enjoy the story and the journey quite a lot, even on the oldest Pokemon games.

I like more story because it adds substance and depth to the fictional world itself. It's the direction of the main games lately, baring Pokémon X and Y, but even they had a notable focus on a dark backstory. Seeing the difference between the original Ruby and Sapphire and their Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire remakes, I can say that the deepening of the story was a fantastic addition to me. Something I do think should be done more is optional side stories that you can largely learn through reading. I mean, just look at Sea Mauville! There was no story there in the original games but they turned it into this tragic location that gave insight into the life of a minor character. The addition of the Delta Episode was an epic addition to the main story and world-building. There's been a lot of stuff about morality, mortality and corruption in the recent games, and it really makes you think, and proves that the Pokémon world isn't as nice and perfect as its surface suggests. That attains my full support for growing stories. As far as I'm concerned, if someone only cares about the competitive battles, they might as well just play the console games where it's all endless battles and no story.

Here's my thing: there are people who say that Pokémon plots follow the same generic formula in every game, what with getting all eight badges, defeating the villainous team and proceeding to become the Champion. If people say that, then they shouldn't care if they think the story in a certain main series game sucks. I really didn't think for the longest time that people cared so much about Pokémon story lines...

...At least not to the point that it kills the whole game if it isn't good. I've seen a lot of insanely jarring comments about B2W2 that trash it basically exclusively on its plot. I mean, I can understand why people thought the plot there was boring (much moreso than aggressively bad), but you're not going to let that keep you from enjoying its content like the PWT, Black Tower/White Treehollow, and the entirety of Southeastern Unova, are you?

If your answer to that question is yes, let me put it to you this way: Take its predecessor, BW. To the people who list 99 problems with that game, what if the plot wasn't one? Would you still be able to excuse every last gripe with the game for the plot? Because there are people who have been able to say good about the plot but that that's all it has going for it.

The point i'm trying to get across is, if the plot isn't good, the gameplay should be able to make up for it. If you REALLY need a good plot when you have tons of Pokémon to use and post-game content, especially in a series where the plotlines generally follow the same formula, then you probably shouldn't be playing Pokémon in the first place. There are other games that are much more plot oriented (like a lot of the RPGs and FPSes on the Sony/Microsoft consoles) that you're better off turning towards if you want a plot to sink your teeth into.

I have to admit I basically skip through the story. I'm not really there to find depth and meaning, just to commit pokebuse and cram animals into tiny little balls! >:3 get in there! Your life is over!

i really liked the indepth story in alpha sapphire as opposed to sapphire. delta was cool but i felt pushed around too much like a courier xD . if the gameplay is good it doesnt need a big story but it is nice add on. i am not competitive and just occasionally go to battle tube or similar(mostly not because no ep) i liked how they had the tree hollow in white2 you had to do a bit of guess work you got high level pokemon to fight and you got exp . (chansey and evo breeders instant lv 1 to 45 haha xD) i liked that it can return anytime :D

I suppose for me, the thing I actually hated about XY was how the story just wasn't pieced together that well—and that really tore it apart for me. I suppose I like the mechanics, I liked the music, and stuff, but it doesn't come across as one cohesive package.

OR/AS fares better in this regard.

I feel the same way. It felt too choppy, with a lot of questions left to be answered, such as...how in the world did Team Flare get the legendary? And where did Flare find it anyways? How long ago? What was Malva's role in Flare anyways? The choopiness makes me think XY deserve prequels or a third version to fill in the blanks rather than sequels which could raise more questions.

I'm surprised that people are bashing Gen V for it's story...most praise it as one of the pluses of Gen V. In fact it's one of my favorite things about that Gen.

I feel like that new Pokemon games ought to focus on story more than they have. I was disappointed how in X and Y there wasn't a real reason to even be fighting the villains, like there was in Black/White. Team Flare had one of my favorite designs for a villain team, but the reason why Calem/Serana even got involved with Team Flare was kinda rushed.

I think it would be nice if there was a bit of a deviation from the typical becoming the pokemon master while dealing with an enemy team.

I loved team flare but really there wasnt much creativity in the story behind xy nor was there in the postgame. Pretty much GF stood behind 1 evil team aims for some crazy goal is stopped by a rookie trainer and the group dissipates and the hero is famous. Ok but from the start most people could tell ok so lysandre is the evil villain and the goal is to make the world more beautiful. What a different goal but really he is a smart person he shouldn't be like this is the only way! To destroy humans and pokemon! Ok im gonna do it! Wait it failed i lost haha what a surprise! And then u got other gym badges went for the league and then pretty much a small postgame. That was it nothing else i mean no legacy really nothing much just the traditional which ya its ok to stick with it but lets have a little switch up im all for the switch from evil teams with bad intentions for the right reasons or the team with bad intentions for the wrong reasons but lets give someone a backstory lets put in another team or a postgame or really anything! Oras postgame was very large and so is the main story really so i think in my opinion xy's storyline could have been much better and was lacking a bit in detail.

Story is, to be quite honest, one of the most important things to me in a Pokémon game. I never wound up getting DPP, so Black was the first Pokémon game I owned with "new" Pokémon; I was ecstatic when I bought it. The story just infatuated me further, easily becoming the most important component of the game for me (aside from the music, which to this day remains on my list of favorites -- some of the tracks are even going into my hack). As such, I was immensely let down by X/Y. ORAS, however, has taken me by storm, no pun intended, and now had its own home on my list of cherished games.

Well, Pokemon is an RPG and an RPG should always be created to serve a story (in my opinion) and not the other way around. By far the most important aspect of said stories should be the characters themselves. That's what really made me enjoy ORAS; a lot of the characters had real personalities that made me care for them. Courtney was the perfect waifu, Zinnia was the person with good intentions that endangered the world for her ideals (and had to face that realization)...along with Maxie, though he was on the more selfish side of things. Steven was the closeted zoophile

But seriously, a good game/story should make you feel attached to the characters. ORAS managed to get right up close to Majora's Mask as one of my favorite games. I just want to hug Courtney so much...

Gen 1- Become the master after defeating Team Rocket in a low scale attack
Gen 2- Become a master after teaming up with others to redestroy Team Rocket
Gen 3- Protect land/sea/both from the evil team(s) then you can do what you want with your life(contests battles or master)
Gen 4- Protect the legendaries and world from an insane man with unquestioning creepy followers to later become master
Gen 5.0- Protect Ideals/Truths about Pokemon and how close you can be by becoming the master
Gen 5.5- Recomfirm the Ideals/Truths while battling Team Plasma to show how you feels towards both groups- The repented White clad Plasma and the spiteful Black clad Plasma
Gen 6- Create memories with your new friends to show off how others can share and be kind to someone who has lost his faith in humanity and plans to reset, even while it pains him to even think about it.

Well I think they each have their own points.~

But yeah my take on stories is that they are usually the best part of a game~
