Pikachu is a combination of ぴかぴか pikapika which is Japanese onomatopoeia for sparkle and ちゅうちゅう chūchū which is the sound of squeaking.

Then it's name really has more than one meaning and many references in it. That's pretty cool. Rodents that it was designed after, the Japanese sounds for sparkle and squeek, and possible the word for kiss. Who would have known the name Pikachu could have so many possible meanings?
