Nepotism...
*immediately google translates and looks in a dictionary*
:c
/me has troubles understanding what that means anyway
So I'll just not contribute to the conversation today and hide in this corner here :l
*hides in this corner*

It just means favoritism; giving a position to a person for reasons of personal connections rather than merit. Nepotism is rampant everywhere, which is why networking is so important; you never know if that kid you met in high school and talked to once every few months is the one that's going to have an opening and think "you know, that kid I talk to every once in a while is looking for a job in this field, I should ask him".

I can credit my life to nepotism. It's how I make a living <3

I mean when you think about it, I wasn't born on my merit as a superior baby. MY LIFE IS NEPOTISM.

So basically, it's an word for:
Someone getting a good job because said someone knows someone else in that job who may help the first someone out?

If yes then I'm pretty much boned, because I don't know any people IRL with those kinds of "connections" yet :l

Exactly.

You're only 15! No one knows anyone with connections at 15. You start in college basically, when you take internships and strike up friendships with the boss and then make friends with people that are all going to be professionals in a few years - then suddenly, connections. I refuse to unfriend anyone from my fancypants school because who knows when they might get a big job and I need one and they'll be in my contacts.

Well the things for me is, simply put
IRL friends are as unreachable and nonexistant for me as about any other of my life goals :c
Hence why I'm concerned about the majority of things regarding nepotism...

Like I said, irl friends isn't really the thing that's most helpful - it's internships where you get into the industry and make friends that way. A ton of college kids get jobs through doing an internship and the company deciding they just want to hire that person instead of looking outside the company for applications.

Really, you're so young - you're really not even at the point where you can make significant progress towards your life goals, let alone stall them. Networking shouldn't even be a worry for you yet, all you need to do is try to get good-ish grades (even though freshman/sophomore year doesn't even matter to colleges, good habits are good) and stay on track to move up to higher education. Unless your life goal is something creative that goes through a more unique path than high school > college > career, and even then I think a lot of creatives underestimate the help of higher education in their creative careers.

Ah, that nepotism. It's something I despise with every fiber of my being, as being the overachiever I am no matter how hard I work or excel in something the guy behind me is going to get it because he's liked better; this was rather rampant in my experiences in my old Army ROTC regiment. The cool part was I got to sit with the majors and colonels and we'd talk crap about how stupid it is, even through the irony that those field-grade officers are where they are because of it. Even more ironic is the fact that the seniors my freshman year couldn't get over the program going to hell and at the time I thought it was okay; I look at the current command in disgust in pity as all the staff officers walk around BSing with their heads up their asses running at the mouth about their next promotion or appointment or what they commanded when, since at least the folks in charge the year before weren't that embarrassing to the name of the Army.

And that's all I have to say about that.

My family really urged me to go into the medical field, since most of them are doctors or pharmacists. Even with promises that they would really help me out and hire me. They still always bring it up to me to become one. But, I'm sticking with zoology/wildlife conservation biology. There's not much money in it, but that doesn't bother me. As long as I'm enjoying what I'm doing, I can say that I'm happy.

Hopefully, with time, if they see that you enjoy your career immensely, they can be happy that you're happy, even if they didn't "get what they want."

There was a time when one of my dormmates walked around carrying her Macbook playing Coldplay after she told her parents that she wasn't going to go to med school, she was going to major in Sociology. It was a sad, dark time.

Well, some of them are slowly realizing that I'm not going to change my mind haha.

I think that once I get a summer job, I'll be able to get together the things I need to function optimally, such as a decent computer build, some better-fitting threads (my black denim jacket is getting rather small, and it doesn't have beer can sized inner pockets), and a few other little tidbits like a silver chain for my neck and possibly a new phone if I can afford it after the computer.

With those things set in place I'd feel a lot more comfortable in moving ahead to figure out things like career options and college plans and whatnot. :p

I honestly can't wait to begin working, because I've been so eager to have a job and be able to make my own source of income. Only downside is, I'm probably going to have little of said money to myself as I pay for my tuition in college.

Oh, and I applied for a job awhile back at a local Target store, and I got the magical denial email this morning. Oh well.

That's nice that they actually told you no though.

Tornado warning here with a confirmed tornado in the area. Maybe I'll get to see it! Hope everyone is okay though

I agree that it's at least good that I heard from them about not getting the position.

Also, I'd take shelter if I were you. :p

I sleep through tornado warnings here regularly. I'm going to die one day because of it, I swear.
