"Okay, so that button does this. So then what does this button do?" Graslan sat on a rock, holding out his Holotch while Rosa sat on his lap pointing at various buttons. Tara rested on his shoulder, watching her owner and battle partner discuss the strange device.
"Dew dew budew." Rosa looked up at Graslan then tapped a few more buttons with her bud, pulling up a list of wild pokémon in the area.
"Ah, so if I pressed this it would signal for another Hoppip?" Rosa nodded then hopped to the ground. Tara jump off Graslan's shoulder and floated down next to Rosa and the two started talking. As Graslan watched both his pokémon converse, he quietly pulled out his sketchbook and started drawing. The sight of his two grass types standing in front of the tall grass with various flowers scattered about just felt like an image that he needed to sketch.
"Hey flower boy, still wasting your time with drawing instead of training?!" Graslan put his pencil down as he heard that familiar voice call out to him. He sighed as he looked down at the unfinished picture before putting the book in his pocket.
"Hey Fletcher, still acting like you're better than everyone else?" He turned around to face the person. Still sitting down, Graslan pulled a sandwich out of his pocket and started eating, staring at the blue haired boy mocking him.
"It's not hard to be better than someone who just sits around instead of training." Fletcher laughed.
"Well, we already did some battling and got a new partner. So, I'd say that's a good start to our journey." Graslan spoke between bites as Rosa and Tara hopped in front of him. Fletcher looked down at the two pokémon and laughed.
"Seriously? You still think grass types are useful?" Fletcher whistled and a Fletchling flew down and landed on his shoulder.
"Flying types have significantly greater speed, versatility, and more secondary type coverage." The Fletchling puffed out its chest. "Not to mention higher intelligence."
Rosa shot a death glare at Fletcher and started to walk toward him but Tara grabbed her to hold her back.
"Grass types have more potential than you give them credit for." Graslan stood up.
"Really? Because they're food to my bird's food. How can any type weak to Bug be worth anything?"
His Fletchling pointed a wing at Rosa and ran it across its neck. Rosa's glare intensified and she pushed Tara back, causing the Hoppip to roll back. Rosa marched up and started kicking Fletcher in the shin, yelling at the bird resting on his shoulder. Fletcher looked down and laughed, pushing the baby pokémon back with his foot.
"Looks like the sprout wants to fight. Care to prove how 'glorious' your grass types are?" Fletcher bobbed his head while making air quotes.
Graslan looked down to Rosa who gave him a look of determination.
"Honestly, I don't want to waste my time fighting you. But I get the feeling there's no stopping her. So, I guess we'll battle." Rosa locked eyes with the Fletchling as Tara stood between the two trainers, looking back and forth concerned.
"Alright. Zephyros, go!" The Fletchling shot off of his trainer's shoulder and flew past Graslan, knocking the last of his sandwich to the ground. The gust of wind sent Tara tumbling back.
"Rosa, same strategy as earlier. If it worked on one flying type then surely it'll work on this one."
Rosa nodded and began twirling, throwing a ring of caltrops onto the field. Zephyros zipped down in a blur and knocked Rosa over.
"Rosa, use-"
"Aerial Ace!" Fletcher called out and his pokémon struck Rosa with the attack before Graslan could finish his command. Zephyros turned and flew down again and Rosa tried to dodge but couldn't move fast enough. She got launched over the spike ring, getting a spike stuck in her foot in the process.
Rosa shook the spike off and steadied herself, watching Zephyros' flight path and aiming a spike straight for him. She kicked spike after spike at the bird, but he dodged every attack before striking her with another Aerial Ace.
"Rosa, that's enough. Come back!" Graslan called out to his struggling pokémon.
Rosa turned to her training, breathing heavily as she shook her head before waddling back to the ring of spikes. Rosa prepared to kick another spike but changed her mind and stared straight up at Zephyros. As the bird came spiraling down, Rosa fired an Absorb beam straight at the bird's face. Though she was stealing her foe's energy to heal herself, her opponent overpowered her and Rosa collapsed to the ground after another strike from the flying pokémon. Graslan ran over to Rosa and knelt down, picking her up.
"Pfft, I told ya. Worthless." Fletcher whistled and Zephyros landed on his shoulder.
"Not worthless. Just at a tactical disadvantage." Graslan mumbled as he fumbled around for Rosa's pokéball. "Rosa barely even had a chance to attack."
"Gale Wings and Aerial Ace. Zephyros was specially bred by my uncle. He's-"
"A gym leader in Johto. Yes, I know. You wouldn't shut up about it the whole year we were roommates." Graslan stood, giving up on finding Rosa's poké ball and cradling her in his arms.
"If I were you, I'd dump that useless bulb at the pokécenter in Nashimity and find yourself something useful." Fletcher walked off, whistling for Zerphyros to take flight. The small bird looped by Graslan to knock Tara over before following his trainer.
"C'mon, let's get her to the center." Graslan reached his arm down to Tara, who floated up and climbed onto his shoulder.
"Fortunately we're not too far from town now." Graslan adjusted his hat before jogging to the big sign looming in the distance. I have no idea what that guy's problem is. Graslan thought to himself as he jogged down the path.
