Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress​

As the world is in the middle of an industrial revolution, a monster appears that cannot be defeated unless its heart, which is protected by a layer of iron, is pierced. By infecting humans with its bite, the monster can create aggressive and undead creatures known as Kabane. On the island Hinomoto, located in the far east, people have built stations to shelter themselves from these creatures. People access the station, as well as transport wares between them, with the help of a locomotive running on steam, called Hayajiro. Ikoma, a boy who lives in the Aragane station and helps to build Hayajiro, creates his own weapon called Tsuranukizutsu in order to defeat the creatures. One day, as he waits for an opportunity to use his weapon, he meets a girl named Mumei, who is excused from the mandatory Kabane inspection. During the night, Ikuma meets Mumei again as he sees Hayajiro going out of control. The staff on the locomotive has turned into the creatures. The station, now under attack by Kabane, is the opportunity Ikoma has been looking for.

Aside from reeking SnK with zombies and trains, it was interesting yet a little predictable:

So... this seems to be watchable. It kinda of worries me that the team working on this will soon (at the same time!?) working on Attack on Titan 2, but that's a different thing.

I liked the first episode. It's quite different from the other dystopian series the studio has worked on, I feel. The protagonist isn't dislikeable and what seems to be the primary cast does not feel flat either.

Like said for last week's episode, still reeks of SnK - especially the movements of the series' "Mikasa" with her steampunk 3d maneuver gear thing with the addition of guns.

Also with the introduction of Kanbaneri, this is starting to feel like Tokyo Ghoul came burst through the door

not sure why, but I think i'm going to enjoy this one this season xD

I am glad that the group that wanted to get rid of the Kabaneri and doing all sorts to get their way had what they deserved despite the fact that the kabeneri have saved the people on more than one occasion. A nice end to the first story arc.

So... what the heck just happened.

I never actually thought we would get into the 'why Kabane exist' in the first place, but now that we see when they merge together (or more like they come out of it?) they form a hugh monster we can assume that there is a reason why this damned creatures are on Earth.

The mysterious character who gets to speak with Mumei (who is probably a Kabaneri, hinted due to the eye/head patch) mentions something about some kind of lord and a mission, so she is not just a random girl fighting monsters across Japan.

Going into the tech details, we all could see how the animation went down in the talking scenes, yet they managed to get the action scenes the correct amount of animation bump (well, kinda, cannot be compared with episode 1 of course) for an episode 5, so I'm happy with the results.

I need more of this. Do we have a number of confirmed episodes!?

Looking at how the Kabane made that giant monster, they seemed to be different from the usual ones we've seen, like how there's a swordfighting Kabane and a brawler Kabane. Maybe this is another breed?

What do you think of the Black Smoke also forming with dead Kabanes as seen in the most recent episode? and who do you think the girl in its heart is? Mumei seemed to hesitate before she killed it.

I highly doubt that the Black Smoke's heart has any significance other than being a memory trigger for Mumei's past. Speaking of backstories, Bushi prejudice and Shogunate? I'm anticipating how they'd link those two points up for Mumei and delve into her transformation into a Kabaneri. Especially her relationship with her superiors, who clearly see the value in her being part Kabane.

On to the recent few episodes, they said that the Black Smoke arrived first before the Kabanes. Could it contain some mutagens/chemicals that forcefully turn humans into Kabanes without being bitten? Plus the fact that it can create a hivemind that has a higher level of sentience, it seems almost parasitic.

During the industrial revolution, governments favored factories over farms when dealing with pollution because the factories employed more people than farms, leading to unchecked pollution from smoke stacks.

With the unchecked pollution came lifespans nearly cut in half compared to people living farther from cities, terrible living conditions, unsanitary water with cholera (more because of human feces dumped into it than pollution), and other stuff.

The hive is called the Black Smoke, and like you said, the Black Smoke may be able to mutate humans without a bite because the Black Smoke came first. I understand the "Black" part of the name because it is black, but why "Smoke?" It does not demonstrate any qualities of smoke. Maybe the people that built the walls surrounding the cities may have called those hives "Black Smoke" because they believe it may have originated from pollution?

Idk. Just a guess. Unfortunately, I dont know much about the industrial revolution in Japan, other than they were much more industrialized than Russia, which is why Russia was quickly defeated in the Russo-Japanese War. I am assuming it may have been similar to how it was done in Europe: government induced through subsidies (the exception being England, where it began because of a number of factors that Japan may have lacked).

So idk if this is even somewhat correct lol.

I don't think the Kabane she could see was 'the problem', but rather what the scene reminded her of.

Hoping we will get more background story for Mumei.

We all know Mumei is fav character, but we need more info about the rest as well. Like, more info in how the world is organized and stuff. Dunno how far we can go with 12 episodes tho.
