Deserts are alright once you get beyond the heat. There are all sorts of things growing and crawling around. They are also a great place to star gaze if there is little to no light pollution in the area.
That looks like a type of thimble cactus due to the shape, spine arrangement, and flowers. It's definitely from the genus Mammillaria.
