    So, Valentine's Day is approaching in America; but I'm not sure about the rest of you guys outside of the states. ^^'

    Anyway, do you plan to do anything special this Valentine's Day?

    Are you going to spend the day with your other half? Or maybe take a chance and ask out the love of you life?

    As for me, I'm taking on the latter. I'm going to gather up the courage to ask out a girl that I've loved for a long while now. I hope it goes over well ^^

    Good luck!

    As for me, we don't celebrate Valentine's Day in Brazil.
    We have something that's kinda like it in the 12th of June, though. There's no tradition of giving chocolate or asking people out, though- it's just a day where you give a gift to your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/whatever [and not someone you want to be your girlfriend, for instance].

    Valentines' Day is just a marketing ploy.

    Can anyone justify why you should love your other half less and show less affection towards them on the other 364 days of the year?

    I will be taking a series of trains to Dorchester, where I will be seeing my girlfriend, Camisado, and having a day to ourselves. =3

    @Ripper: The same reason non-Christians celebrate Christmas? =/

    True.
    But, if they didn't have Valentine's Day wouldn't people be saying that there should be a day to celebrate love?
    Sure, your argument would come back into play... but, it's just like saying no-one needs to celebrate their birthday because you shouldn't need a reason to celebrate someone you care for.
    So, Valentine's day is just like a birthday... for all the couples of the world. =)

    For me Valentines Day is my birthday.
    But I always spend time with my girlfriend.
    But meh it really is just a marketing ploy

    I will be... oh, nice, I'll be home relaxing before I get a move on studying for my first Calculus midterm the next week. :P But yeah, no one "special" to spend it with and I don't really care. I adore romance in fictional settings but honestly if I had a boyfriend or girlfriend any extra affection or anything would just make me feel awkward so I don't mind sitting around at home doing nothing. XD;

    Lots of people need special occasions for that stuff. I mean, you can't go all out for your significant other every day of the year. You don't even have to follow the commercialized version--just spend some time with or do something special with the person or people you care about. :( Everyone's always so cynical about it.

    To be honest, I'd rather just spend Valentine's Day just doing what I've done almost everyday so far, spending it with the one I love the most. And that's really the greater treat in the long run.

    I believe that's called an anniversary.

    Also, just in regards to birthdays. A Birthday celebrates your birth, not specifically you, much like an engagement celebrates the 'birth' of a relationship.

    As a non religios non christian I celebrate Christmas as a coming together of friends and family at the end of the year to reflect on the previous year. I'm sure others are purely present oriented, but the whole point is we should try and eliminate this, much like Valentine's Day.

    I have no significant other in my life. I'm going to spend Valentine's Day looking for a new job.

    I really don't care for Valentine's Day. It's just another meaningless day in the year.

    I don't have a boyfriend so I might just exchange cards or something with friends like I used to do when I was younger. xP I sort of wish I did have someone though, but oh well. :[

    I actually don't know when it's celebrated in any country, so I'm going to Wikipedia...
    14th February.

    In all my sixteen years in England I have never seen anyone celebrate it.

    Valentine's Day is just going to be a normal day for me...No one special to spend it with. Kind of makes me miss the times where I actually had someone special, but meh, what can ya do? =P

    ...Have you ever been to a town centre? Card shops have been selling Valentine's Day stuff since mid-January. ._.;

    All I do is just get exited. =O
    Don't really see the point of this day! meh

    Valentines day is another pointless day of the year, like Halloween.
    Christmas is completely different.

    I can. Not everybody has the cash to spend on random expensive dates. That's obviously not something everybody can just go out and do.

    I agree it's a great marketing scheme but it gives couples incentive to get off their butts and go out and do something. My fiance and I probably wouldn't randomly go out to an expensive dinner and date but we can say "Well, it's Valentines day." and then treat ourselves to it.
