Hi guys, I'm not sure if there's really a need for this idea or not but I feel it could be useful.

A mention system - just like on Twitter - so if someone was to write "@KidCarter93" in a post across the forum, I would be notified by it so that I'd know someone was trying to get my attention for whatever reason. It would save them having to PM/VM me and wait for me to get online to see it.

On another forum I frequent (which is also powered by VB) they have this feature so it could probably be implemented easily enough (unless they created their own custom VB plug-in to enable it).

Do you think it could be a useful idea or even if there's any real need for it on this forum?

You be surprised that Ever Grande City actually has this feature implemented right now, you tag members and a notification is sent to the tagged members. But yeah expect it to be coming here soon!

EGC has this, and it's pretty nifty. I wouldn't mind seeing it here as well, and I think Audy was already working on it, or at least something similar to it. So yeah, there's a good possibility that it'll happen!!

Glad to hear that it's already being worked on :)
It's a really useful feature and it'll be good to ser it implemented over here. Just expect some of the more annoying members to push the boundaries with it initially :P

I decided not to install the version that Ever Grande uses because it puts this god awful copyright notice on the bottom of every single page:

    Spoiler:

    No bueno.
Are there other versions to install which will work but won't cost a small fortune? Or does this mean the idea is on hold for now?

Iirc, Audy actually has this idea in the works. You'll possibly see it soon. There's a whole bunch of new stuff happening, apparently. =P

Awesome; I had the mind to suggest such a feature as well. :D Although the one I was thinking of was that if someone quotes you somewhere on the forum, you get a notification in your Control Panel or something (i.e., similar to the drop-down thing that, when you login, indicates when someone has liked one of your posts). The Bulbagarden Forums was where I first noticed the implementation of this "Quote Notification" feature, and now that I'm delving into this more, it also appears that they have a similar "Mention Notification" feature that the original poster in this thread seems to be suggesting.

He's making his own custom version, iirc.

In any case, glad to hear that this feature is in the works, and I await its eventual implementation! :)

That would honestly be horrible, and it's honestly the reason I left Bulbagarden. Too many people get quoted too many times on a daily basis. We might as well set the server on fire because I think that would be more merciful honestly.

Not to mention that I would really like to avoid getting 50 notifications every time I sign in. I'm personally fine with checking my subscriptions for updates on replies and all that.

Hmm....you have a point about the potential server strain. I guess it depends on the user, as some may get quoted heavily while others get quoted rarely or not at all. Maybe there could be an option that allows users to opt out of "Quote Notifications"?

Yeah, I thought that the thread subscription feature could serve roughly the same purpose, but for some reason, I've hardly used that feature lately as opposed to when I first joined PokeCommunity (maybe because it's easier for me to post in a bunch of threads, yet manually subscribing to each one and keeping track takes a while; though IIRC there might be a feature that automatically thread-subscribes every time you post)...

I'm kinda glad the system for mentions used at EGC isn't getting implemented here.. although my username at EGC is just my first name (Zach), their system apparently looks for fields that come before and after the name like *Zach*, with the asterisks representing any characters before or after my name, such as "sfuhqfuZachwrwggwdacwr", and I would be notified of a mention if someone literally typed that out. It's happened to me twice already xD

But I'm all for a mention system, just as long as it only mentions the username of the user with an @, like @ZachLMedia, or something along those lines.

This is what's available on the Android development forum I'm on. Both quote and mention notifications can be turned off.
I don't think the mention system can be fully turned off but I know it can be changed in the settings so one doesn't get email notifications about it. It's not a problem with that site having quote notifications though because the servers are prepared for it considering there's an average of 35k people online at any point. I do agree that it may be a strain on these servers though especially for a feature which many won't feel the need for.

Quote notifications are not bad honestly, and actually are quite useful for keeping track of who replied to a post of yours. I would welcome something like that here if it's possible. Good to see that a mention system is in the works, that is a really neat feature.
