Does anyone feel bad when a new game released? I know this is weird but, here is why:
When a game releases, previous one be thrown away into the trash. If you can't afford the new game, you will feel bad probably.
I haven't got any console in my life except Gameboy Advance (Because of lack of money, in my country, inflation is too high, Nintendo Switch worths a 2 month salary)
I don't watch any Pokemon Sword & Shield content because I don't want to envy. I haven't got any chance to test Switch games, so maybe they are not good as they look like. But it makes me feel bad.
Do you have any suggestion? Maybe an alternative game o etc.?
    Spoiler:

    emulation

It's tough when you can't afford to buy new games, to be sure - FOMO is a pretty hard thing to overcome, especially when you can't buy the thing. Selling your old games is one avenue into buying new ones, although by no means a perfect one. If you can't play yourself and don't want to watch others, avoiding it all seems like the best strategy. There are plenty of other things out there you can enjoy!

Personally I'm not sad to be moving on from SnS, it's been a very turbulent chapter in the franchise history and hopefully one that won't be repeated...I mean, it can't get much worse than these two games, really. But then I thought that about Sun and Moon.

Gaming is definitely an expensive hobby though.

I moved this over to Pokémon Gaming Central since it focuses more on the games as a whole than Legends: Arceus!

Honestly, I understand. I pretty much always buy main series games right on release because I feel left out otherwise seeing everyone online play and talk together about it. :( It's human to feel this way and I'm sure a lot of people can relate. I think fangames are a good way to help combat that though, there are a noticeable amount of fans who are vocal about how unhappy they are with the direction of the games and play fangames instead. Or people who play both, but prefer fangames because they're made by people who have been longtime Pokémon fans and try their hardest to make a game they think others would enjoy, without the business and deadline pressure Game Freak/the main series has. Definitely should try some!

I honestly don't have that feeling anymore. Maybe I've spend too much time during gens 6 and 7 that I got fatigued and just couldn't get bothered with gen 8. Also the drama around the dexit didn't help making me want the newer games.

At the same time I'm also bummed by the current vicious release cycle. A game a year means new content a lot quicker. But it also means less content overall which results in people being done a lot sooner which means they'll expect new games a lot sooner which means the next games need to be released sooner and you get the point.

S&Sh also tried to go the DLC route which I'm still no fan of, so there was even more of a turnoff. That's why I mostly stick to older games and maybe a handful fanmade games/ROM hacks. I think there are even some Indie titles that try to catch the feeling of a Pokemon game to some extend.

yeah i felt this way in 2013 when i couldn't afford a 3DS and X and Y came out. i couldn't even watch Youtube LPs of the games all the way bcs i was too heartbroken. a whole new chapter of Pokemon was being written and i was barred off simply because my family was too poor to buy me the new Nintendo console. i fully understood though. my mom was a struggling single parent, and we had more important things to worry about than video games at the time.

fast forward to me being independent right now, and i guess i've just gotten past the point of caring. i still can't afford the new gen consoles but... why bother? i've already skipped 3 generations at this point. and hey, i still know all the Pokemon, i can still get up to speed with what people talk about on Pokecommunity. and it's not like the game formula's changed that much anyway for me to be missing out on anything significant. maybe it might help you if you take a look at it from my perspective. also yeah like Dawn said emulation's a thing lol. catch me doing that on the regular

The only thing that makes me sad when a new game comes out is the ever decreasing quality of games.

to be honest, i've gotten the games right on release from gen 3 to present day, so i felt this long ago when i was a kid. and i get that - it sucks, and especially when you're a kid bc you have no money to just get things yourself or to save. i would get money for holidays and my birthday that i would specifically save up for pokemon games though, hence the buying at release starting in gen 3. but i didn't have the system before that either, so that was another expense. it did suck when my friends would talk about red/blue and gold/silver when i didn't have them (i had gotten yellow and a gameboy but lost them quickly unfortunately, so quick in fact that i can't even count them). i had the spin off titles at least but it's not the same.

if anything though, i feel this more with other games. i'll get them later after everyone's moved on and i'm still the clown sitting here playing them. that's the thing about gaming in general the last few years. it's like if you don't get the game right on release, you miss out on all the hype, when people are discussing it, playing it online, cosplaying, making art, etc. you get it like way later and it just feels...lonely. so i get where you're coming from. i wish there was a solution, but i guess there really isn't sadly, unless you just come into a large sum of money by some sort of wizardry but lol we all want that. anyway, i think it's largely due to social media. you see people making videos and streaming and posting screenshots and thoughts on the games and you sit there without it like damn i'm missing it. and then people will just move on to the next big thing. i'm in a bit of a rut like that myself; my friends all moved on to other things while i'm still enjoying some older games and it's really lonely. i have no interest in what they're playing, either. so it just feels like we've all drifted apart and idk when our interests are going to align again.

my only other suggestion is what i did as a kid - collecting pokemon cards. that was my biggest joy as a kid without the main series of games bc in my mind, that's how i caught them! and collecting cards is so fun. the artwork is so neat, but even this suggestion might not be the best, considering the state of pokemon card collecting at the moment. but still, it might help to some degree and if you remain pretty casual about it, it's a cheaper hobby than gaming is. that's if you stay casual, anyway. best of luck, friend.

one of my best friends irl feels this way. i was... somewhat privileged growing up, because i got pokemon games almost always day one when they dropped. said friend would always get the game relatively late, oftentimes missing out on entire generations due to life reasons. i feel bad, because i think it'd be fun to play the newer games with him. at least that way it'd be like old times sake.

i think it's important to remember how expensive a hobby gaming is. pokemon these days is especially by no means cheap. when you consider the price of a Switch itself, + HOME, + NSO + the games themselves... it be rather pricey. :c

I feel this way upon the release of new consoles.

I felt left behind upon the release of the switch, and I have similar feelings with the PS5 being released.

Awww.... I was worried I'd feel this way too, since I didn't get a Switch until very late 2019 and knew Pokémon would move over eventually >_> Was in denial and dead set that the 3DS was better at the time lol. Glad you have one now though!
