News: New trial, Mantine Surf, and more revealed in the latest trailer for Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon!

So, I noticed the Totem Marowak is at Wela Volcano Park but Kiawe was nowhere to be seen.

Maybe this means Hiker David has become the new Trial Captain?

Hmm, so according to the Japanese trailer it looks like Necrozma appears out of the Ultra Wormhole at the Alter where the player goes to rescue Lusamine. I wonder if Lusamine is the main baddie again or if the player is there for a different reason.

Everyone's talking about Mina and 400 Dex, which is nice and all but are we just going to ignore the music that was playing during the Mantine part of the trailer? That was great

But all you've seen is the gimmicky video about "Who's the Best Hiker?" and the snapshot of Totem Marowak? Unless I missed something, I don't think this means anything at all. Kiawe could very well be there just not in the footage shown yet (like maybe you're supposed to do the trials in a certain order and the Hiker is there when you're too early, maybe that Hiker scene isn't in the game at all and that video was just made for the campaign, etc)

I will be disappointed if there are no new Alolan Pokemon, but it seemed like most of the ones revealed were ones with Megas which we know probably won't get Alolan forms. So I think there is still hope. With 400 pokemon, there has to be some more changes that effect pokemon.

Mantine Surfing looks awesome, but I have to wonder how laggy it is going to be for people with older 3DS's.

It looks like the follow feature will not return to the games like a lot of people thought. I have yet to see footage of it and instead it is something for Photo thing. But I don't mind. I still think a select few pokemon should be able to follow behind its trainer.

Mantine surfing music is cool, as is surfing to the islands. Brings that tropical island feel right into it. Summer time!

I worry about what having 400 Pok?mon means. Does that still mean they're keeping the National Pok?dex out? (Which, to me, is a bold yet positive direction, in my opinion.) Will there be separate Dexes for each island still? So many small questions!

My guess is they're sticking to the same Pokedex system as S/M, with the islands each having their own Dex listing while the National Dex is once again confined to Pokemon Bank.

It also appears as though Mantine surfing seems to be pretty much like soaring, as far as transportation goes, because Charizard already exists for quicker transport. If there's no real incentive for surfing other than just for the thrill and the minigame, then I doubt people will use it, instead favouring Charizard to quickly fly between the islands. Hopefully they do provide an incentive to surf and add some more bonuses, such as maybe some dive spots or even legendaries.

This is pretty much my main concern about the whole Mantine Minigame. I know there's a lot of people in here who are jumping right into saying "Yay we have Soaring in the form of Mantine Surf!", but to be honest, we didn't see that in the preview. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be the Debbie Downer of this new feature or anything, but we didn't see actual traveling between the islands in that mini game preview. What we saw was the player riding Mantine, confined to one specific area doing flips and tricks on a Mantine.
I really do want Mantine Surfing to be the new Soaring. I think that would be really awesome, but honestly, that's not what we saw in that preview.

Edit: I actually just did a little searching on the Pokemon Website and I was surprised to read that they actually explained that Mantine will be used for transportation from island to island, which is really cool! They weren't very good at explaining or showing that in the trailer, but it's nice that they explained it on the website. I'm also really happy they decided to implement this feature because it really opens up the Alola map significantly. I really did think that traveling between the islands by surfing was something that Alola really needed to feel bigger and add more immersion. So I'm pretty happy they are putting in this feature.

I think it did say "Surf between the islands of Alola" in the trailer, but it looks like you saw it on the website already :p

Yeah it definitely did say that in the trailer, however I was sort of interpreting that as "You can surf in areas between the islands.", I'll admit it, that was very short sighted of me. However as I mentioned, the website was significantly more clear on it to the point that my weird brain couldn't possibly misinterpret it. :P

Mantine seems interesting enough as a game feature, but it doesnt feel like it belongs in a Pokemon game at all. Seems like something out of Mario x Sonic at the Olympic games, not Pokemon.

GF seems to straying further and further away from what made the games great into new territory, and I'm not sure out to feel :/

what is wrong with trying something new? It isn't like this Mantine surf ride is 100% of US/SM. In fact it is barely 10% and if you don't like it you can always skip it with fly pokeride.

IT STILL HAVE TURN BASED POKEMON BATTLE! The only way this argument holds any water is if GF decided to get rid of current turn based pokemon battle system and turn it into Legend of Zelda like battle system.

Remember that 7th Gen turned a complete 180 on most traditions of the main Pokemon games, such as replacing Gyms with Island Trials.

Eh... I mean if you think about it... aren't the island trials more or less just a new form of gym puzzles and the Z crystals are sort of like usable gym badges? I mean don't get me wrong, I did like the twist in the formula that the trials added, but it's not really that much different from what we had originally.

However, if I wanted to take this even further I could say that most RPG's share this element. A stereotypical RPG often has you crawling through some dungeon in order to have you solve some kind of puzzle for the purpose of unlocking the boss in which you battle, and then at the end you collect an artifact that helps you continue your ultimate quest.

No issues here, and I agree that the Mantine Surfing travel is a great addition, in fact it's a great way to step away from that stereotypical RPG formula. Soaring was an awesome addition to OR/AS and I love seeing it return with it slightly changed for Alola as surfing rather than flying.

Yea I know, but I was hoping for another 180 because I disliked the SUMO.

Pokemon games are a lot more than the battle system. I dislike the early FF games as well, even though the battle system was almost identical to Pokemon.

sooo let me get this straight... you think Pokemon should NOT be changed and should remain frozen in gen 1?

Are you basically saying that they should go for an ATB system, like in the later Final Fantasy games? That maybe could work, and that seems to be a possibility in the Switch game, considering it uses vastly different hardware from the 3DS. However, it may take a bit of getting used to if you haven't played any of the Final Fantasy games, but on the other hand, FF fans would likely welcome this change.

nope I am saying that Phyrrhic have no grounds to complain since pokemon will NEVER change its core battling mechanic. Everything else is free to go but its battling system of having two ( or four or 6 in the case of double or triple battle ) battle it out by turn will not change. They may add a type or do something with story or formate of story but this battling system will not change. That is like saying Mario will stop being platformer.
