Real time notification of new posts

So, have you ever been ninja'd? I have a ton of times. I write a post on a thread, and but by the time I post it someone's already made a post before mine that makes my post irrelevant or inaccurate. Then I edit it, and then someone else posted after me before I got a chance to edit, and the whole thread falls apart.

My suggestion: when you're viewing a particular thread, what about having a real time notification of new posts on that thread? Something like this at the bottom of the thread:

x new posts have been made to this thread

And then you can click on it to update the thread (preferably without it erasing what you've already started typing).

I'm not sure if this has been suggested already, but I think this would be a really useful feature to have.

A real time version of such features would be neat. I've been on forums that just tell you that posts have been made in the meantime when you try to post and imo it's more annoying than useful, and would be especially so for threads like the various DCC threads we have.

However, I don't know how server intensive a real time version of it would be, so there's that feasibility that would need to be considered. And there remains the fact that before you post you can just hit preview post and scroll down, which'll show you if any new replies were made already, so in a way you can already prevent being ninja'd unless someone gets in during that rather short time frame... and if that does happen, oh well.

Yes, ideally. Although a auto-post saver would be really neat to have as it is, haha.

If I'm correct, PC is currently running on vBulliten. All the features you mentioned are leaning more towards the XenForo Forum Software, but there may be hacks for the forum that allow it. :)

I think that would be an awesome feature, and it would probably help reduce the amount of parroting we get in some threads. Great suggestion! Really hope that we can get a feature like that eventually.

I'm okay with this... because we have been getting loads of improvements lately, and as our little Snivy stated we could definitely use such a feature due to our very active state.

I agree. I've seen plug-ins that tell you. New Posts have been posted on this thread, Click here to view them!
It'd be especially useful for things like DCC and stuff.
    Support.

It'd definitely be helpful to have some real-time aspects on the forum considering how active some sections seem to be. Beats having to linger around a thread to see if you double-posted or someone beat you to it :P

I'm definitely all for this.. other forum software use this technique to prevent parroting, so I don't understand why vBulletin doesn't. And PC is definitely a forum that could use a feature such as this with the activity it gets.
Probably because we are literally running 10 year old software.

It's on the to-do list for PC 2.0, I believe. At least in a similar way. It's a prominent feature on software such as Xenforo, so we'll hopefully code something alike as we update our software.
