Now that they've introduced Fairy to combat Dragon...

...do you guys think they now have to introduce another new type to beef Dragon back up a bit? Let's face it, Dragon did get kind of nerfed this generation? I mean, sure, its still viable because of its resistances to the three "staple" types (Water, Fire, and Grass) and Electric. However, its now weak to three common attack types (including itself) and is only super-effective against one (itself). Plus, since many Dragon types are also part Flying, that makes them lose that resistance to Electric and makes them 4X susceptible to Ice type attacks.

So, do you all think that there should be a new type introduced somewhere along the road that could balance it out and build Dragon back up? Or, maybe retool the type chart and remove some other types' resistances to Dragon (Steel, for example)?

Nah, I think Dragon deserved to be taken down a pin actually. Thing with the Dragon type is that it's been reasonably rare before but nowadays there are quite a lot of Dragon pokémon that aren't that hard to come by with trading being everyday business and all. So I like that the paradigm shifted somewhat.

In the lore of the pokémon world though, I always think it's odd when they "find new types" haha. How was Clefable not strong against a dragon before, I mean?

Also, Superfox, if you feel like this topic is perhaps mostly about the gaming aspects, let me know and I'll move this topic over to Pokémon Gaming Central :) In Pokémon General, you can get a whole lot of different kind of responses to a topic since people post with more open interpretations, haha.

Actually, yeah, I would appreciate if you moved it there. And thank you for sharing your opinion.

    Nah...
    The Dragon-type is still a top-tier type.

While Dragon attack are indeed super-effective only against one type (themselves), but they have
the greatest neutal coverage of any type.

& Dragon-type pokemon still generally have very good stats & a wide selection of moves, so
Fairy-types may make things a little more difficult for them, but it's very possible for Dragons
    to beat Fairy-types nonetheless.

For example, Garchomp is faster than the fastest Fairy that I know of, Xerenas, & Fairies usually have
bad Defense, so Garchomp (especially if it's holding a Choice Scarf) can hit & KO them with Earthquake
before they can do anything. I don't know about after Belly Drum, but I know that Garchomp is bulky enough
to take an unboosted Aqua Jet from Azumarill. Togekiss will only present problems for the land-dwelling
hammerhead shark if it doesn't have Stone Edge, which so happen to be common on it.
Oh, Whimsicott is a Fairy-type, so it'd be the fastest Fairy...
But it's offensive stats sucks, so I don't expect it to cause much of a problem to Garchomp.

I agree, dragon's still relatively the same as it's been before fairy-types were introduced; top-tier. However, one thing they could possibly attempt is to perhaps make it super-effective against another typing (aside from itself, of course), so that it could balance its additional weakness, as you're saying. I'm not exactly sure what it could be, though... bug, maybe?

Generally, bug Pokémon are tiny while dragon-types are opposite, which would enable latter to squash former quite easily. If you go towards that route, you'd be able to explain things pretty well; all-in-all, it would definitely make sense. Of course, not all bugs are small (see: Genesect), but most are.

I don't think they'll add anything that will bring Dragon back up again. They didn't just add a new type for the sake of it (hopefully) and I'd like to think that they thought this all out thoroughly before they decided that Dragon was unnecessarily overpowered in the current generation and that the game would be more balanced with them taken down a notch.

Nah, I don't think they need to introduce another new type to help out Dragon types. I love Dragon types myself, and I think that we have a good balance between Fairies and Dragons. Initially I was afraid that Game Freak was overreacting the Dragon type's power and that they'd make Fairy some OP ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but thankfully that's not the case.

The introduction of Fairies did hurt some dragons, like Hydreigon and Salamence, but several others are still capable of going toe to toe with Faries. Like Stoney pointed out, Garchomp has STAB Earthquake and enough Speed, power, and overall bulk to not be scared too much by Fairies, while Haxorus gets Poison Jab and has nearly Uber level Attack so it can wreck them (although strangely enough, a physically defensive Eviolite Clefairy at full health can just barely survive a +2 Poison Jab from Haxorus). Most Dragons aren't reliant on their STAB to deal damage, and generally have enough coverage moves and/or a good secondary type. Rayquaza has V-Create and a decent selection of moves, Reshiram is part Fire so Fairy attacks aren't supereffective against it, Zygarde is pretty bulky, Black Kyurem has Fusion Bolt to hammer Azumarill with, and Zekrom's Bolt Strike (particularly with a Choice Band) is something most Fairies quake in fear of.

Dragon's a type with good qualities overall, so simply introducing Fairy isn't enough to make them useless. Not to mention that adding yet another new type puts strain on the somewhat delicate type balance we got going here.

....I just wish Fairy didn't resist Bug. Why does everything have to resist Bug?

Dragons are so OU that I'm actually very glad they nerfed it a bit. Makes things a ♥♥♥♥load more interesting.

Since this thread just seems to be getting replies of "Nah, don't think so," I hope it's all right if I add another topic to discuss. What do you guys think of Gamefreak adding another type? Why do you think they would do it? If it was to combat a specific type, which would it be?

I'd want them to add something to combat Electric other than Ground.

Also Fairy type made Poison types effective against another type instead of just Grass. I thought that Fairy was going to be OP but I think they did a great job balancing out the types.

Hmm... this is a pretty tough question! I'm sort of inclined to go for a type to counter ghost, since, I believe, there aren't much out there to cover it aside from dark and itself. I'm not sure what I'd be naming it, though. Probably alien (or something along the lines), haha. There are plenty of Pokémon that would suit this category, such as Clefairy, Deoxys, Solrock, and Lunatone.

I would agree with this and give a kudos to gf and all but then I see those obviously over powered mega mons and feel like slamming someone's head to the table. So no I don't think they thought it all out and all, I think they just wanted to favor the sweet tooth of all 5 year olds.

But yes dragons are still amazing, even though fairies stop mindless outrage spam unlike last gen, they were still what they were, mindless. Any average player can still use dragons efficiently.

It's kind of hard to imagine another type that Game Freak would introduce so soon, even one that would go against the Fairy-type. Considering Poison and Steel are super-effective against them, and there are quite a few Dragon-types that can learn moves of those types, another type to use alongside them isn't something i'd foresee happening so soon.

I also believe it's something that Gamefreak is not going to do soon or ever, but it's just speculation. I think that the type chart is actually really balanced now and that bringing in anything else would cause it to be unbalanced. Dragons really were overpowered in the past couple of generations, because mindless Outrage spam could be somewhat deadly even to those who resisted it. I can't really think of anything as an equivalent in this generation, so I think we are good for now.

Dragons are still plenty healthy in terms of metagame viability. Their STAB's are powerful and scarcely resisted, their coverage often gives them options to deal with fairies, who don't handle any much less super effective hits very well; bar a few - and the average dragon's BST is still stellar.

No, I think if there were any minute tweaking to be made to balance the already pretty nice X/Y competitive scene, I'd like to see Venoshock act like Psyshock. It's pretty small; but I think letting that one special poison attack hit fairy's weaker physical defense would give a nice ♥♥♥♥♥ (wow, I didn't realize the forum would sensor c|h|i|n|k; as used to indicate a chip or flaw) to their being arguable the best defensive typing in the game. I mean Poison Jab and Iron Head are nice, don't get me wrong. But the steel and poison weaknesses on the special side are kinda ehhh. Flash Cannon and Sludge bomb are basically your only options.

Honestly the only change that I believe should be made is Dragon being Super Effective against Dragon be removed.
That doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Then Dragon would only have 2 weaknesses, Ice and Fairy, not to mention it'd make Dragon moves kinda useless.

One Way I look at it is there isn't any other type that is super effective against itself is there? (If there is I overlooked it) so I dont see how Dragon having it makes sense.
