5th Gen Official English Name Discussion

Wow after some last minute shopping, some revealing names are another present to me. x)

I have to admit, I would have never expected their names to be as such. Pansear (Baoppu), Panpour (Hiyappu) and Pansage (Yanappu) seem so out of place to me, but at the same time I like the sound of both Baoppu's and Yanappu's English Names. Panpour just seems so generic if you think about pouring water; but also doesn't really roll off the tongue like it does for Pansage and Pansear. Otherwise, they're alright. I suppose I'll get used to them easily, because to be honest they are not totally horrible for the monkeys either. n_n
 
Panpour is actually my favorite out of the three too. I'm happy with any names that Nintendo throws out. All of them have been original so far. I mean, who seriously predicted Pansage or Oshawott?
 
The "Pan" in their names is a clever reference to a genus of apes, but their names are a little lackluster to me.
 
Hm... I've just figured out how The Pokémon Company International comes up with all these names. I'm guessing they look at the original Japanese name origin, then they look the words up in a Thesaurus, then find the name that they think would fit the best.

Like for instance... if you look up "warm" on an online Thesaurus, you'd find "tepid" included as well. And not to also mention... "lukewarm" as well.

It's all about similar names when they use them. Like "pan" is very likely to be originated from chimpanzee.

For English names... I've got quite alot that I've managed to come up with from doing the same thing as what The Pokémon Company International might do.

So without further ado... lemme show you all some of the names that I have managed to come up with (along with of course some of the ones that have been already announced):

The elemental monkeys' English names aren't bad, but they'll take some time to get used to. I like Pansage and Panpour the best out of the names.
 
I like the names, actually. Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour. All of them roll off the tongue nicely.
 
Hey, I'm actually pretty pleased with them. For those worried about how they aren't really chimpanzees... well... I mean... Charmander isn't exactly a Salamader now is he? At least, I've never seen an amphibian that becomes a lizard, since Amphibians are generally seen as more genetically complex.

Still, I'm going with Oakkey, Smokkey, and Soakkey for my nicknames. :)
 
Pansage, Panpear, Panpour? Eh. I like Yanappu, Baoppu and Hiyappu more to be honest. I mean, when I think of this names, I think of Pinsir, not cute monkeys. :(
 
I like Pansage the most, it rolls off the tongue best. I like Panpour too.

I'm not mad about the name Pansear.......actually as I typed this I noticed it's name is made up of Pan + Sear as in searing hot. I didn't notice that before I thought it was something to do with "ear". :p Not as bad as I thought. Still Pansage is top! However I'll be getting Pansear because I'm picking Oshawott.

Do these names have anything to do with the greek god of the wilds, Pan I wonder? (You know the half goat, half man guy with the antlers)

I don't mind if they're names all start the same, after all they are part of the same trio....so they're linked I don't see why they can't share name similarities. Like the regis.
 
Its too bad really, it wont make a difference if we like the new names or not because in 2 years we will be so used to them most of us wont even recall there Japanese names
 
I was hoping they would do something more obvious for "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" thing with their names.

Pansear does have "ear" in it so that covers "hear no evil". The "pour" in Panpour could be referencing a word like portent, which sort of connects it to the "see no evil" idea. Pansage... well, it's got the word "sage" in it and I can't think of how well that could connect with "speak no evil" without too much of a stretch.

Also (and I don't think this was mentioned, but I skimmed so maybe it was) "pan" can mean "all" like it means in words like panorama, pandemic, panacea, etc.
 
Wow, I actually really like the Elemental Monkey's English names. They're perfectly fine! =/ Panpour and Pansear, I like the most. Pansage is a bit... confusing (I don't even know what "sage" means O_o). But like always, we'll get used to them eventually. :3

EDIT: You know what they should've named Pansage? Panseed. It's WAY more obvious were the "seed" part comes from.
 
When all is said and done I'll probably only remember the japanese starter names and a couple I really love like Desukan and Rankurusu.

I can't be sure though because Gen 5 is the first time I've become so familiar with the japanese names.

For me Pansear was the least obvious name while I instantly recognised Pansage and Panpour. I didn't notice the "Sear" part for a while....

Oh, so THAT's where the pan comes from, not necessarily chimpanzee, but from chimpanzee's genus. (not ape)

From "chimpanzee" on wikipedia:
Chimpanzee, sometimes colloquially chimp, is the common name for the two extant species of ape in the genus Pan

Edit: And for those who don't know what sage looks like or is, it's the seed-like spice found in many sausages. (Hint the "sage" part of the word sau"sage".)

Don't forget that there is also a mythical fire-dwelling creature called the salamander.
