5th Gen Official English Name Discussion

Not open for further replies.
Wow I was recently viewing the latest blogs and I just had to post here. n_n Honestly, I really don't see the big deal. If the names are the official English names I won't really mind, because a lot of the names are actually pretty coolin my opinion. Until it's confirmed I can't say we'll at least try to adjust, but if they are, I'm pretty sure just like the Japanese names many people will get used to the names and even like a couple of others that they probably didn't before.

Some of the names, so far are actually decent, they could have been worse, besides if some of them have bad names, it dosen't really make the game less fun.
Although, I think they should have kept the name, Wargle.

There's something curious in the official website. If you click on gameplay and take a look at the battle screens that appear, you can see Swanna in the front one. My question is: they didn't reveal it yet, so WHAT'S SWANNA DOING THERE?!

...wow. o_O

That's a pretty big mistake imo. I think that means Swanna will be revealed soon, along with Shikijika and others. Otherwise why else would it be there other than a mistake? D:

One can trust PC to be complaining about names, let alone currently unconfirmed names. -_-
But yeah, there are some of the English names that I like... but most of them I don't like. I kinda think... the company has gone corrupt.
Corrupt? Sure, a company made some changes you didn't agree with, so that makes them corrupt. Wait, what? =/
Nothing is perfect in life anyways, Black/White had such a short development time...
But who knows when black and white's development started? It could have been years ago - they don't necessarily reveal these things, but Pokemon games typically have a couple/few years of development. (Correct me if this was mentioned for b/w though =p).

Awe~! I love Woobat. It's sounds so cute~
I don't like the one for the mummy-looking one; I can hardly pronouce it (not that I could pronouce the Japanese name, either).
And Axew for Kibago? So cute~!
I'm mildly happy so far. I wish Bel could have kept her name. I mean, Bianca's pretty, but I liked Bel better.

Yeah, I agree, I did prefere Belle, but atleast Bianca's a nice name.

Spoiler:

Haderia's name made me lol.

Herdier.

HURR DURR.

XD

I don't know why they would change Bel to Bianca and not change Cheren. Cheren is the more 'exotic' sounding name in the first place. Oh well, at least it keeps the same meaning.

Oh, here is some extra help explaining some of the names.

Dewott - possibly Dew + Otter
Most likely and so close to my Aquott idea
Stoutland - Stout + ???
The line has aspects of Scottish terriers so perhaps the 'land' comes from 'Scotland'
Purrloin - Purr + ??? sound like sirloin lol
Purloin: "to appropriate wrongfully and often by a breach of trust"
Drillbur - Drill + ???
Burrow
Audino - ???
I think someone already covered this one. It's "I dunno", which is similar to its Japanese name Tabunnne which means "probably".
Sewaddle - Sew + Addle??
Swadloon - ??? + Cocoon
Both of these are probably using 'swaddle': 1. To wrap or bind in bandages; swathe. 2. To wrap (a baby) in swaddling clothes.
Crustle - Crust + ???
Could be muscle
Yamask - ??? + Mask
Could be referring to Yama, one of those king of the underworld kind of deities.
Karrablast - ???
Perhaps carapace
Elgyem - Get back to you on this
LGM - Little Green Men
Beheeyem - Get back to you on this
BEM - Bug-Eyed Monster
Bouffalant - Buffalo + Pouf + ???
Bouffant, the hair style.

Those are obviously not the real ones. It's a focking rumor and is there any proof they've at least already decided the english names?

Opposite outcome. I thought Bel would keep her name or it'll be updated to Belle, but I thought Cheren would change his. I was thinking Charles but that would loose its meaning, even Chris. So I thought that Cheren might actually keep his Japanese name. But Bianca I did not expect. Bel doesn't have that edge to be called Bianca, Touko does xD But at least Bianca keeps its meaning but in a different language, Spanish as to Dutch. Blanca en Espanol means White. Blanca/Bianca. Bianca perfectly translates to White in Italian xD

I like Bianca, wish they could have changed Cherens name. Keep N was a good call too.

I love woobat.

I'm not saying they're real I'm just assuming, these were posted before they were announced on serebii and the official Pokémon website and some of them match the announced names so I assume it could be the correct list.

Even tho they could be the real ones, I didn't read them because I don't want to get spoiled (again), like with the starter evo's. I thought they were fake so I decided to view them but they turned out to be real... And what I did notice was that Pokéxperto got the sprites (pretty long) before the first rom was released. Did he got the game earlier maybe?

EDIT: Just found out something. Look at this:

Spoiler:

Notice how it says "Game Sync". The Game Sync isn't revealed yet, but the site does say something about it. I guess it will be revealed soon, like Swanna, which has a screenshot about it on the site, but isn't revealed yet.

Forever says (4:47 PM):
*Krookodile - Totodile
Tranquill - Cyndaquil
Gothorita - Chikorita

Finally figured out the last one which adds them up. None of the other starters have the last parts of their names in the rumoured names. That's kinda interesting tbh, as to whether if they are real, if that was done purposely. Maybe Johto has an unknown connection to B/W!. Interestingly, two of them are dark types...

Gym, as I said, I love what you've figured out, a lot more than me!

Gochimiru is Psychic-type lol

Belle's name change was.. unneeded, IMO. Would've rather seen Cheren's name changed, to sound less girly. Granted, I like the name Bianca. That means 'White' in a Italian (I.E. the game is 'Pokemon: Bianca Version' in Italy), so I think it was a pun?

Those are the real English names, it's essentially confirmed now.

Somehow, since last night I've gone from sadfacing the names, to being glad that they are official. Because I find most of them hilarious. =w= /shot
