5th Gen Official English Name Discussion

Chili? Seriously? That's what they named Pod? I mean come on! I'm happy with Cress though.

Striaton City. Hm, well, it's close to Sanyou, I guess.

Best Gym Leader names EVER.

I have to say I like the Japanese names better this time around. The English names just don't seem as creative as they have been in the previous four generations. That's just with the Pokemon though, as for the trainers, I can say I'm pretty satisfied with them.

I like the English names. They aren't as cute and fluffy as the Jap. names, which is awesome. I know the culture there is all about being cute and all, but Gen IV seamed 'too cute for comfort' with bits of the original tough battling monsters. I also like the city name Striaton City. Very punny on the word 'striation'.

Chili for Pod? Ugh, I hate that name. They could've named him something else. Cheer Up also makes more sense than Work Up. Cress is okay.

Also, Tympole and Timburr have been confirmed.

Adding to that, Shippou is now Nacrene City.
So far out of the city names, Castelia is my favourite... even though we only have three.

And for the English names, let's just say it's a good thing I have most on that list memorised.

Nacrene and Castelia are nice names :) I'm happy.

Chili and Cress and Cilan. I am okay with those names too.

The name I am very unimpressed with is Sawbuck... Shimama is a more feminine pokemon and they name it after a male deer?? How does that work? It should at least be named something with Doe in it...

Wait what? Shimama is the electric zebra Pokemon, that evolves into a very masculine bigger electric zebra and it's English name is Blitzle, which is very appropriate. I think you're thinking of Shikijika, the grass/normal deer Pokemon who's English name is Deerling.

EDIT: That, or you're thinking of Mebukijika, the evolved form of Shikijika, who is a male deer who's English name is predicted to be Sawbuck, or Sawsbuck, which is, again, appropriate because it's a buck, a male deer and it does look very masculine.

I was thinking of that XD I realized right as I clicked post I was thinking of the wrong pokemon as I had just read Forever's post in the B/W thread about Shimama! But I didn't have time to edit, needed to make other posts then had to go out straight after XD

I KNOW WHAT SEWADDLE MEANS TOO! (if i didn't see it in previous posts)
"The name comes from Serotinella, a caterpillar that uses leaves for many things, and a Swaddle, a coccoon like blanket (which is what Sewaddle's leaves are.)"

quoted off another forum.

According to Serebii, they updated the site today confirming that the list of names that we're revealed last week and hadn't been confirmed have now been confirmed and are the correct names, and are all on Serebii.

Regarding Dent, Pod and Cornn's English names, I'm not sure about them. I don't like the name Cilan as it's got several ways to pronounce it and it's kinda annoying. You could say Chili is predictable, but I don't like it at all. It seems too feminine to me for some reason. I actually do like Cress, despite being the most feminine of all, but I got the reference right away. :D
Just so you know if you already don't...
- Cilan: Some sort of herb thing or something.
- Chili: Chilli, spicy hot food or seasoning.
- Cress: Deprived from "Watercress", an ingredient used in cooking.

I just love all this, because everything ties in with each other. The names tying in with the theme of the gym, and their typing. It's like poetic justice, Pokemon style. <3
