It's a mixture of both, more or less.

You certainly don't want to drop something like the iPhone X, regardless of what Apple says about how durable the screen is.
Considering how much an iPhone X costs I don't think I'd even want to take it out of the house...

you could buy a good PC from that money
10x my phone
lots and lots of food
a car

Makes sense. xD

...and really, with the amount it costs, you could buy far more useful things. I guess that's what a contract is for, but it might as well be a loan for the price.

This is essentially my biggest gripe with iPhones so far, and even Samsung's own devices aren't too far off. I'm genuinely wondering how much is too much for a smartphone. @__@

I guess it depends on how much you use it? I mean, if I didn't have a laptop, or a home internet connection, and it looked like I wouldn't for a while, I would seriously consider an expensive smartphone...not an iPhone X, but if it were my only means of communication, I'd need one.

...but for most people it isn't their only method, is the thing. Seems normalised behaviour in modern society to have a top range smartphone...

I genuinely doubt most people really need a $1k smartphone. Like, even if you work a profession in which you rely heavily on your mobile device for communication, you can most likely accomplish just as much with either an older iPhone device (like the 6 or 7), or a mid-high range Android device.

its mainly there for "status"

"o look I have a 1k smartphone and you peasants do not haHAA"

that kind of nonsense

If my old phone didn't die I'd still had a old Nokia that functioned properly

There's that delightful societal pressure to have the latest and best things, especially if you're younger. I suppose the need is psychological, but that doesn't make it any less real to the people who are experiencing it. Although practically speaking, of course nobody *needs* a ?1k smartphone when a cheaper model can get the job done just as well...and isn't such a catastrophe if it goes wrong.

I'd quite like an iPhone 6, but I'd settle for a 5s or an SE. Or an LG model or something.

I kinda feel that way about a lot of practices in the video game industry, haha.

I've got an iPod and I'm used to the layout of things, which is the only reason I'd have an iPhone over any other smartphone - I wouldn't have to learn how to use it and I could put my existing music/apps on it. xD

I don't even have a phone, I just use my mothers
