  • Though Avalugg looks badass and I'd love to use it, I don't like the fact that it's one of the "Amazing Def, Crappy SpD" Pokemon. Oh, it's also slow as hell, but it's perfect for a Trick-Room team. In fact, in a team like this, Avalugg can destroy every single Fairy type (well, maybe except Azumarill) with Gyro Ball.

  • I really didn't like Bergmite and Avalugg- hideous all around. I really would've appreciated a fairy/ ice type, at least, since they catered the game so heavily to fairies just wrecking face- especially with Team Flare. If they introduced the fairy type to wreck Dragons, then a fairy/ Ice type should've been introduced. Needlessly OP, perhaps, but funny as hell when it came to wrecking dragons
Sounds more like Bullet Punch bait to me. XD

Anyway, I can't really complain about the lack of ice types, I didn't really care about them anyway. A few extra fighters and ground Pokemon would've been better, if y'ask me.

I use the new Ice type in OU since it's a great pokemon really.

You talking about Avalugg? Is it really? You're not the first person to say its good. I look at it and don't think its that great. Sure, it has high Defense, Sturdy, Rapid Spin, and Recover, but it has a Stealth Rock weakness (which is ironic since it can spin), awful Sp.Defense and Speed, and a bad defensive typing.

Am I missing something here in regards to Avalugg?

    Rock/Ice (Amaura line)

I honestly laughed so hard when i saw Amaura's typing. 4x weakness to Fighting, 4x weakness to Steel, 2x weakness to Rock, 2x weakness to Ground, 2x weakness to Grass, 2x weakness to Water... it can't get much worse than that.

I love ice types (well, duh, my username!) so I was annoyed at this. My favorite ice type EVER is Glailie... (I can't spell, the one that evolves from Snorunt I think).

  • I totally understand how upset you are over so few ice types. I feel like we didn't get too many either. I wasn't particularly upset because Avalugg is a monster and Aurorus is awesome. Since there were so few Pokemon this gen, I expected to not see a million pokes in one particular type exceptfairy

I think ground got shafted the most this gen, the secondary typing of a regional rodent and a legendary that many don't seem to like. After that I'd say Poison, although it did get a really great line.

The ice type did pretty well for itself in comparison. Since we only have 72 new pokemon there was bound to be a shortage of many types. Ice is lucky it got four pokemon.

From what I read, I think the second biggest amount of new Pokemon of a single type we got this generation (other than Fairy, which was being heavily showcased) was probably Water. We have not only Froakie line, but also Binacle and Clauncher line. But then again, Water-types are quite common anyway. And we did get a fair share of new Ghost and Dragon-types as well, probably to make up for their rarity in general.

Ice type just isn't that popular as it has quite a few common weaknesses and only resists itself. Since it is one of dragons few weaknesses (especially before faire) I believe they have always tried to keep the type from becoming very strong/popular or it would check the esteemed dragons. Imagine how popular jynx would have become if they let her evolve with magmar and electabuzz. A speedy powerhouse with stab ice and psychic moves.

What people often do is use thier more popular water types and throw non-stab ice beam on it for stuff like dragons. You don't get stab but water types have a lot less weaknesses and resists a lot of things (including ice).

I don't even feel that what they gave up was very good. Aurorus rock/ice typing is terrible for reasons that other have already covered. Avalugg is extemely frail on the special side on top of being slow. Any mixed attacking is going to Ohko it and almost everything will outspeed outside of trick room. Both these new ice types are just frustrating to use cause of how their inherent drawbacks.

Water, according to Bulbapedia, is the most common typing. There are 124 as of Gen VI, which is almost an entire generation's worth of Pokemon on its own.

  • Ice types will still get shafted for having less types regardless if there's only 69 new Pokémon. What concerns me more is whether or not GF is wise enough to avoid picking types who received the least number of new Pokémon for gyms and Elite Four battles (Ex: There shouldn't be a Ghost specialist in Kanto's Elite Four due to having only one line in the dex roster) so they won't have them use 2-3 Pokémon from the same line or Pokémon not associated with the type. Not only that, but they also need to make sure none of the gym leaders/Elite Four members don't use Pokémon who are already sig Pokémon to previous type specialists (Ex: Mavla shouldn't be using Torkoal and Chandelure, for they belong to Flannery and Shauntel respectively as their sig Pokémon). This is why type diversity is a big deal when it comes to gym leader rosters and Elite Four rosters.
