History:
Spoiler:
For 43 years Godfreid had been a fisherman. He started working on his uncle's fishing boat when he was 13 years old. His uncle died nearly 7 years ago, and in his will Godfried was given the old fishing boat. For those 7 years he has lived off of the ocean. He put a radar on the boat, set up the nets, put a bed in the belly and has spent 10 out of 12 months on the water in that time. Rain, shine or snow he has sailed the waters. He always thought that this is what it must mean to be truly free. He was free from taxes and he didn't have to worry about providing for a family; he simply set out on his boat and lived his life the way he wanted to.
Nearly a week ago he heard it on the radio: a distress call. It was coming from Washington, something about they're everywhere and they're tearing through everybody. Godfried had no idea what it could be and so like anyone else, he set out to where the signal was coming from. A small dock of off the border of Canada, completely deserted. He filled his tank with gas, went to the little general store and found that nobody was there. He left some change on the counter and took a pound of beef and a couple of bags of butterscotch candies.
He hadn't been around here much, but he figured that this was normally a pretty popular place given all of the boats docked there, so Godfried started to get an uneasy feeling in his stomach. He looked around, went to a couple of houses and knocked on the doors but got no answer. He went back to his boat and got on the radio. The signal was still coming in strong so he asked them where they were.
"Oh thank god! You're the first to reply in nearly 3 days! I can't believe there's someone still out there among the living! Oh please, please you have to come to San Juan! We broke the bridge so they can't get past, but if you could just get a boat I'm sure you could get over here just fine! Please hurry! We're starving and I just don't know what to do!"
Godfried was sure this was some kind of prank, but given with how many people were around he decided that something might actually be going on so he decided to head in the direction of San Juan. He got in his boat and trolled along the coast. He had been going for about an hour before he saw anything, then off in the distance he saw a massive fire. The island he was supposed to be going to was caught up in a fresh fire, everything was burning and the smoke had just barely started to fill the sky. He turned the motor on full blast and headed as fast as he could to the island.
The same voice from before came through the radio, but instead of sounding rushed and full of urgency it was now slow, calm and almost sounded sad. "It's too late. They managed to get here. Jerry went first, then Cynthia and now they're beating on the door to the closet that I'm in. Please, just let the island burn. At least this way they won't get anyone else. It's really the least I can do for this life I've lived."
Godried got on the radio and replied, "What are you talkin' about son? Just wait a minute, I'm right off the coast. I'll be there in just-"
"No!" The voice shouted over him, "Just leave! There's no saving us. Just save yourself. Go as far away from land as you can. Don't ever stop, just keep going until you run out of gas. Even if the sharks get you, it's a better death than being had by these monsters. *CRACK* Oh god. Oh god, I can see them. They're coming in, oh god please no. Please, no. No. No!" Silence.
Godfried sat on the radio yelling to see if the man would respond, but after nearly an hour everything on the island had been burnt to cinders. There was nothing to save now. Godfried heeded the man's final words and set out in the opposite direction of land. After a few days the fish stopped biting, he ran out of water and the tank was straddling empty. Maybe he should have tried to search on land for a while before just riding off in the exact opposite from what could be civilization. It was too late now to think though, he had been awake for nearly a week now. He was too scared of being this far out in the ocean without anyone else, and so after nearly a week he simply passed out.
He awoke in the middle of the night to his boat bumping into land. He didn't know how long he had been here, but he gathered his things and after a long moment of silence, decided it would be best to leave the boat.
