Points/Mechanics

How do we want to track and represent points this year? Is there anything different we want to chuck in as a mechanic?

I remember us doing pretty well on scoring last year but I'm open to suggestions.

If it was good before does it need to be changed :^) We don't need to keep things difficult if we have an existing system that works for us
sjkdfhls ok but hear me out....... negative points

imo games like who's that pokemon or others that people can collaborate should probably have lower point values since i feel like a lot of people shared answers and submitted en masse

it's a bit of a topic in another thread but theoretically would this be "fixed" with balanced team members?
also wasn't it fixed in a later point in the gt where they *did* have lower points?

We definitely did lower the points dramatically last year and we calculated that a week of the small games was roughly equivalent to a long-term event. So if we do similar to last year we're probably fine, yeah.

I think I'd rather not to negative points though. I'll double check exactly what we did last year, but we're probably fine to do the same.

I'm listening!

The model we had last year, once we realised a few problems with events getting scored for each entry and stuff causing a huge skew, I think mostly worked out OK. But as a reminder, I went and grabbed what we had last year:

'Large' Events (something typically spanning over 1/2 weeks
1st Place: 100 Points
2nd Place: 50 Points
3rd Place: 25 Points
Participation: Either 5 Points or at EO's discretion

With the participation points as well, that means that even grabbing 2nd and 3rd with 5 members participating means you can equal 1st place, but if we don't include them then it's not a huge gap either.

'Small' Events (something that either happening over a few days of the GT or are shorter things such as Pictionary/Jackbox)
Participation Points: 10 Points per person
Miscellaneous: Depending on the even, could run a small 1st/2nd/3rd too? Using the two examples above, could keep track of who wins and allocate accordingly. My only issue is that I know last year there was mention that technically people can skew votes etc. to stop teams from winning and I'm unsure if putting in the 1st/2nd/3rd points will cause that to become more of a reality, especially as it's quite hard to gauge if it is happening.

For achievements, I think it may be better to come up with them first so we can decide properly, but I envision no more than perhaps 50 points for the harder ones to get, with maybe 10-15 points for the easier ones. Want to keep them at enough points so people will try to get them but also don't want to have them become the sole focus and people stop bothering with events.

And we also had the Achievements last year, which I think worked pretty well? This was the full list in the end:

I did leave this exactly as it was on the Discord, just so you can see how it was also set up for teams completing said achievements (and maybe what tweaks/additions/takeaways we could do!)

Also if there's anything you need from last year's stuff, just shout and I can go and obtain it both here and on Discord :)

I'm listening!
bless; it's kind of a wild idea when im thinking about it and now that im thinking abt it even more better suited for more than teams of two. but the idea i'm floating with has two ways it can go. 1) the winner have the ability to deduct points from a team of their choice (chaotic ability steal points from the other side hahaha); or 2) bad sportsmanship plays would lead to deductions (more number 1)

though keeping it simple is better tbh

The model we had last year, once we realised a few problems with events getting scored for each entry and stuff causing a huge skew, I think mostly worked out OK. But as a reminder, I went and grabbed what we had last year:
yeee that's what i was thinking like it wasn't too terrible last year!!

one thing i do feel from large events is that compared to small events sometimes the payout isn't worth it but the participation points make up for it most of the time (looking at the writing contest where everyone just jumped in and made a little drabble lmao)

'Small' Events (something that either happening over a few days of the GT or are shorter things such as Pictionary/Jackbox)
Participation Points: 10 Points per person
Miscellaneous: Depending on the even, could run a small 1st/2nd/3rd too? Using the two examples above, could keep track of who wins and allocate accordingly. if these are the party games that people can vote on yeah idt having placement points is a good idea. also thinking where the draw-along would have gone in this small event as afaik we awarded a bit more than 10? but also less than the big events since in the end they're just chill drawing (and on that tangent where would events that are short but have more effort needed go?)

im too dead to calculate the math but multiple small events with a lot of people vs 1 big event with a lot of people which usually gives more payout in points? (e.g. bunch of scheduled jackbox games vs writing contest; assuming that there's a jackbox game a few hours a day x 2 weeks wouldn't more points go towards the small games?)

And we also had the Achievements last year, which I think worked pretty well? This was the full list in the end:
i love the achievement list a lot! i don't remember if that list was public. since there's a bunch of "not obtained" achievements too and while secret achievements are great maybe having like a solid list of achievements the people can see would be interesting and switch up their potential playstyle?

So... I'm thinking maybe

Large Events
150 pts for 1st
100 pts for 2nd
50 pts for 3rd
10 pts for participation

Small events
10 pts for winning a game
5 pts for participating

Plus we'll do achievements again. Thoughts?
I'm hoping that we can further avoid any skewing from repeating small events like this.

That sounds good for now!
Definitely do achievements again (still hoping for a public achievements list version too like what some steam games do)

Not sure if we can avoid skewing tbh, 5pts is still a lot if small events are done a bunch of times

So we did have a list of all the achievements; how to get them; whether they were obtained; who by and when they were achieved. We put it into a Discord channel that looked like this:

[PokeCommunity.com] Points/Mechanics

That said, I do think putting something together for the forums too would be good; I'm aware last year was a bit of a scramble so we didn't really put as much on the forums as we could have.

In terms of general achievements, this is what we had last year:

  • Win all of the Trivia events - 75 Points (10 for each - Anime & Manga, E&M, Six Degrees, VG Trivia and VGM Trivia; if one team doesn't win all of them, will get 10 points for each one won)
  • Obtain the most Achievements as an individual - 20 Points
  • Obtain the most Achievements as a team - 20 Points
  • Place 1st, 2nd AND 3rd in an applicable event - 20 Points
  • Hold onto 1st place on the leaderboard for the most time in an applicable event - 10 Points
  • Have the most chat messages in their team channel - 5 Points
  • Get the most participants in an event - 10 Points (10+ participants)

I'd probably keep this list? Obviously the trivia is going to be dependent on what is hosted, otherwise the only thing I'd really maybe look at is tweaking the team chat points and maybe holding onto 1st place in the leaderboard? Hopefully with the teams being a little more 'balanced' and whatnot, the chat one should be harder to get and therefore the points might be a good incentive.

That 75-pointer makes my eyes water haha, because it sounds like it could get unbalanced, but then I remember it's not all that likely a team could win them all so… heh :)

Seems balanced and fair though ultimately. Lesgoo

You say that, but it indeed did actually happen last year. That said though I think that was more just because of one team being much more proactive than the other, which had missed several days of submissions.
