@colonelsalt Hey, I tried the demo of this game like 10 years ago and liked it, so I was delighted to see it was finished and just beat it a few days ago.
Well done! You did a great job of weaving the story into that of the original gen 1 while pulling inspiration from the manga and fan-theories and unexplained parts of the original lore- I particularly liked your rehabilitation of Blue, haha. I also loved how the protag's appearance changes with promotions and seeing him cycling furiously in his gangster suit and slicked-back hair was peak.
The obvious appeal of the game was being able to steal strong pokemon from your vanquished foes. This and the lack of a pokedex really changes the experience. Suddenly, "catchin' em all" feels less important and the goal becomes to get more powerful (or cooler) pokemon for your team- casting aside the old ones like a tru gangsta. Grinding also becomes less important- I used a casino Dratini at the start but gave up on him during the mid-game because of his slow exp rate. Finally, I just stole Lance's Dragonite instead. My final team was:
Ninetails (Vulpix stolen on S.S. Anne)
Scizor (Scyther stolen from Arab)
Gengar (Ghastly stolen in Lavender Town)
Starmie (stolen from Misty)
Dragonite (from Lance)
Tyranitar (Pupitar from a Victory Road trainer)
By the way- I commented on your itch.io page about this, but Substitute is bugged. When my Ninetails used it, enemy attacks just went through the doll to take Ninetail's HP. This isn't a big deal since the game isn't that hard though and I just taught her another attack instead.
The morality system was interesting, though easily hackable if you just get your bounty high to get Rocket rewards and do the Mart robbery then get it back down to be a Smooth Criminal. Though I was a little disappointed that it doesn't seem to affect the ending significantly.
I actually didn't know you can beat the game before challenging the gym leaders, so the post-game was a bit underwhelming- just catching MewTwo and the legendary birds (to not use them).
Of course, it would've been fun to actually have the agency to make Team Rocket into a real threat and take over Kanto... but I understand this wasn't possible since you prioritized compatibility with the original gen 1&2 plot. As amazing as our protag is, he's ultimately powerless to change Team Rocket's fate. He's never in the right place at the right time to effect change. It almost seems like a plot hole that he's stronger than Red (and clearly has the same freakish powers by virtue of being a game protag), though this is somewhat lampshaded by Oak when he says something like "How is this possible? Wait, you're...", implying that Oak recognizes that the protag is the same kind of entity as Red. So the plot hole is that it's never explained where the protag came from. But then again, this idea will start to wear thin if you overuse it- you won't be able to make any games with controllable protagonists without addressing it.
You mentioned you're working on a new game- how's that going?
