I've been kind of dodging this one for a while. For one thing, I wasn't eager to pick up a GameBoy Color game (not a lot of people put much effort into those, as you may have noticed around here) and after the whole Pokémon Ice Version fiasco, color me wary. After seeing "Summer 2010 Beta!" in the thread title, I finally broke down and downloaded it... and let it sit around, unplayed, until a few days ago. Finally fired it up...
I. Am. HOOKED.
I'm impressed with the scripting. When I play hacks, one thing I like to do is test for inconsistencies. I was quite pleased to NOT find any loopholes in your events, including things more hackers wouldn't consider, such as "What happens if all my Pokémon faint here and the player is forced out of this event?" From what I've seen, it's all airtight.
The segments in which you play as one of your Pokémon definitely impressed me. Many have attempted similar feats before, leaving the Trainer's sprite and Pokéball animations in the battle intros.
I'm blown away by all the custom programming you've done. Changing sprites and palettes, new skill-based gimmicks like mining and weaving, inserting poker and Blackjack at the casino, using Pokémon of specific types to accomplish tasks such as lighting a fire or charging an electric generator... Your 3-going-on-4 years' worth of effort shows through.
I'm also pleased with the new type charts -- while it's been a little frustrating re-learning some types (Fighting is RESISTANT to FlyingWind? F***), I like the new types, and the weaknesses and resistances actually make more sense now (i.e. Wind > Fire).
The story is also intriguing, the characters entertaining (1337sp33k Professor, ha!), and the events varied and novel enough to make this a very engaging game.
So thank you for wasting away years of free time to make this game. Nintendo should hire you, if it's not too bold to say... NO WAIT! Then your games wouldn't be free! As you were... lol.
By the way, two glitches I've found, both fairly minor, but I might as well point them out:
---When you start the 'new' card game (the one that was coded by GameFreak but not used), the card graphics briefly flash inside the text box. Don't know if it's fixable, or if you even give a ****, I'm just saying.
---You somehow managed to f*** up the Game Link Records screen pretty good. I've attached a screenshot that I took the very first time I set foot in a Pokémon Center. I've checked a couple times at other centers since then... There might have been different graphics, but I didn't care enough to compare screens. Again, don't know if you even care, but I would think this one's the bigger of the two issues since you do intend Link functionality between Prism and Brown at some point.
Cheers!
