I re-read the update to find what was the ctulhu reference, and remembered I forgot to say that dolphe is just a red dolphin (with 3 fins). It looks weird because I drew it in a probably-too-crooked pose.

Squirtle's name is a combination of "turtle", for its turtle-like appearance, and "squirt", which can mean either a verb as in to spray water, or a noun as in a nickname for someone who is tiny in comparison to others. It can also be a corruption of "squirrel", pointing to its squirrel-like tail, but that is unlikely. Zenigame is simply the Japanese word for pond turtle, 銭亀.

Summary: Squirt + Turtle is more likely to be where Squirtle's name comes from, and not Squirrel + Turtle. Both are in speculation, but based on the Japanese name, there's no indication for "Squirrel" at all.
